Mock-up police car.

Thank you. I checked in from time to time early on, early information is sometimes inaccurate.

My question is : when did he leave his neighbourhood? Where was he first spotted by the RCMP in the morning?

The first shooting and fire was at 10:30. There were numerous calls to 911. RCMP must have arrived in 20 minutes, an hour? They arrived, and one young man was hiding in the trees for four hours listening to shooting and houses blowing up. He called his father an hour after he went to look for his brother - who was a random victim checking out the first fire.

The shootings North of Truro, were later that evening, or the following morning?

Nova Scotia shooting may have begun as a domestic violence dispute: Investigators

Police have said there’s at least 16 crime scenes. This began with “more than 10” victims and now it’s up to 22 with the possibility of more victims scattered throughout northern NS. During one of the PCs it was stated it will take months to conclude their investigation, which would presumably include the route he took.

They also said they would not be releasing relationships between GW and the victims, if there were any as it’s believed some victims were targeted but others were random. There’s a lot of information in media stories but it’s impossible to put in chronological order.

But the link to the map I posted just upthread is an indication of the magnitude of this senseless tragedy.

Where was he going when he was
His instinct is incredible. I think most people finding a family member dead on the ground would panic and start looking around.

This guy instinctively turned off his flashlight an ran. And he's alive because of that.

I was impressed with that too! He and his brother heard a gunshot, father said he did not. One son insisted on checking out, father said no, brother stayed with father. When he found his brother dead on the road his instincts definitely kicked in, even knowing that his cell phone could give him away.

This article has the video of what appears to be an officer changing into his vest.

IMO, it is not GW because the cruiser does not appear to have the upright antenna on the trunk of the vehicle (unless he removed it so it was not easily distinguished)

He's very casual. I think he expected to get away with it.

They spoke to this at the Presser. Stated killer acted alone speaking to the actual crime but are investigating to see if anyone else was involved leading up to the crime. I would think it entails folks knowing or unwittingly aided in obtaining what he needed for his intended crime.

Such as selling a stolen RCMP office uniform.

That article is really a jumble of information with sketchy sourcing. Investigators say the domestic partner was targeted, and that there are dead bodies at her house, but can't say if she is among the dead? That seems like an impossible combination.

I still think this all stems from the Warmington article, and it may be accurate. It hasn't been confirmed by any family or RCMP. I would say it has been repeated but not confirmed by other media. I've read some speculation as to who the partner is, but certainly can't confirm it. If there is a domestic partner victim, I'm not sure that she was the co-worker at the clinic.

Don't believe anything that isn't Canadian news - we know better!

A rifle and a handgun is what I read.

As per RCMP: Police have not confirmed what types of weapons were used. Leather said RCMP “have a fairly good idea,” but those details are under the purview of the province’s Serious Incident Response Team.

He said they are looking into how he obtained the weapons and would not comment on the weapon types used in the incident.

Anything else is rumour or bad information.

It’s a pretty remote area enforcement-wise. I think he was high on the power trip of murder.
I agree on the power trip, and will add my speculation on addl motive.

The following is my opinion only, and is speculative in nature...

I believe that GW was attempting to erode the RCMP's authority. By his actions, with the fake cruiser and uniform, people would be scared to trust anyone in an RCMP cruiser or uniform, until he was apprehended. So for that brief period of time, he was temporarily the ultimate power broker, wielding more power than even the police, while the RCMP's powers were lessened by his actions.

As the investigation unfolds, it seems to me likely that one of his motives will be found to be revenge on the RCMP. He was obviously a cop wannabe (to the extreme), and coupled with the yearbook statement, he may have attempted to get on the force at a younger age. He was then rejected, perhaps due to psychological test failures. We know that he was mandated to take anger management following the assault charge. For his entire life since then, although somewhat successful financially, the grudge was held. Stuck making plastic teeth, could have been an RCMP. All the years of pent up anger vented out in revenge during his 13 hour power trip where he held the cards, and even the cruiser, gun and shoulder patch.

If he did attempt to join the RCMP at an earlier date, it would be quite interesting if the RCMP still had access to his application and their reason for rejection.

Nova Scotia civil address finder can be used to find lot numbers and sizes and compared to those around it. It also shows the footprint of the structure compared to those around it. But If you want access to the actual property records for exact parcel size dwelling info etc you either need a subscription or dig around outside WS to find that information that someone may or may not of posted online....

Thank you!

Could it be possible that the ex was the injured person and her boyfriend is one of the guys who was killed? or Maybe he was not after an ex at all.

People who are from a large city may not realize how few RCMP officers are available in a rural area. There were probably only 2 on duty to respond to the firearms call, and another 2 officers 20 minutes away coming to give them back-up. I guess the others would have to come from Truro, about 25 miles away.

Look at the large area they had to cover. Add to this that they didn't know the suspect was dressed like one of them with an RCMP cruiser until the next morning. Of course, I'm not a local who had to go through the nightmare there, but from the outside looking in, I really can't be critical of the officers out in the field trying to deal with the worst crime spree in Canadian history.

I find it very surprising that Chief Supt Chris Leather, who by all accounts is a very intelligent person and a capable officer, would use the term FAC in his response to media regarding GW firearms license status. The FAC (Firearms Acquisition Certificate) was long ago replaced by the newer licenses, in the late 1990's. The POL (Posession Only License) is now extinct, the remaining license is a PAL. A PAL is a Posession and Aquisition License, and has various classification permissions such as "Non-Restricted, Restricted, or Prohibited Class". The Firearms licensing system is administered Canada Wide, by the RCMP, in New Brunswick, at the CFC. One would think that Supt Leather would use the correct term... details matter.

All PAL holders are checked daily by the system for any reasons for concern, such as violent incidents, psychological incidents, assaults etc. PAL holders are the most vetted people in the entire country. I am thankful that GW did not have a PAL, because the firearms he used are therefore no different than the vast majority of murders in Canada... unlicensed criminals, with illegal weapons. Hopefully, the law abiding licensed firearms owners in Canada will not be unfairly subjected to further restrictions.

.
Yes - technically "Bible Hill" where the detachment is located, a bit further east than Truro proper...

Why did the killer change his clothes do you think? Did he have blood on his jacket? Did he intend to stand on the road somewhere pretending to be securing the perimeter? Was he too hot? Did he know there was a surveillance camera there? In case someone had a description of what he was wearing?

  • #576
I would presume that he did *not* know of the surveillance camera. Since many of his other actions appear to be planned out with fore-thought, I speculate that he changed to the HiViz vest to throw off the description, and further his escape / aid in continuing his murdering spree.

Some information I hadn’t noticed reported yet. A list. And I wonder if Gina was able to make a heroic 911 call or how the 2 officers tracked him down in the tragic shootout that occurred. So the vehicle he stole had to have came from around Shubenacadie as well as this was where his fake cruiser was burned.

“The Globe learned Wednesday that the gunman had gathered a list of people to target, according to one of his would-be victims.”

“Gina Goulet, a fellow denturist, was killed at her bungalow in the countryside outside Shubenacadie, more than 75 kms away from Portapique. It was also in Shubenacadie that the killer was in a shootout with the RCMP – a violent exchange that left Constable Heidi Stevenson dead and another Mountie injured. He wasn’t stopped until he reached Enfield, about half an hour north of Halifax, where two officers shot him dead.”

CBC played this on the news all day today. What a loss.

and what was he doing overnight - sleeping???

I wonder where he was, and I'm thinking that if police were called at 10:30 and shots/explosions went on for some time after that, then it's almost as though he remained in the area (at home) until morning. Then he resumed murders and burning houses in Wentworth.

Did he think that if he got to work, he could disguise himself and get away? He plan was to leave no witnesses, but one couple recognized him and hid in their home. I wonder why he didn't set their house on fire.
