This is news from Vancouver Island from May 27th, 2021. It says the RCMP is investigating a "high-profile historical missing-person case" in Nanaimo. The description of the case as "high-profile" and "historical" got me interested. Does anyone have any guess on what case it might be?

Probably, the most famous case from Vancouver Island is Michael Dunahee. His case would be both "high-profile" and "historical." However, his case is associated with Victoria and was likely a child-at-the-playground abduction while the case in the news piece sounds domestic (ie. between a man and a woman).

Another "high-profile" and "historical" case from the greater area is that of Emma Fillipoff. She went missing from Victoria in 2012. I don't know if her case was ever associated with Nanaimo but it's not that far away. Certainly, she would be "high profile" as her case received a lot of news coverage. When a case becomes "historical" as opposed to modern is a matter of opinion but it is nine years ago.

The case of Carmen Robinson might be another "high-profile" one but that's from the Victoria area as well in 1973.

I was thinking Lisa Marie Young might be the case but the news source says that it is not hers. What are the high-profile cases for Nanaimo, please? Feel free to PM me if you don't want to make your opinion public.

I would have said Lisa Marie. Interesting. Waiting to see where this takes us.

@Sillybilly Historical to me would be more than a year. Funny how that changes the look of this case!

Man missing since March 2020 a victim of homicide, Nanaimo RCMP say

Sidney Mantee was reported missing in October 2020. VIA NANAIMO RCMP
An Indigenous man missing since March 2020 is the victim of homicide, Nanaimo RCMP confirmed Monday.

''The family of Sidney Mantee, 32, contacted police in October 2020, concerned for his safety and well-being. Family members living in Saskatchewan said it was out of character not to hear from him for so long.''

Case of missing man now classified as a homicide
''32-year old Sidney Mantee was reported missing by his family last October. In May of this year, dozens of RCMP swarmed Diver’s Lake, and the area around it, in connection with the case. Police divers spent time in the water, but nothing was reported to be found.

An apartment where Mantee once lived, on Rosehill Avenue, was also searched.

RCMP divers were back in the water this past weekend, this time at Piper’s Lagoon and Neck Point.

As the case is an on-going investigation, RCMP have nothing to reveal to the public at this time.''

I found it strange that the original missing persons report says he is missing from Ottawa and that his mother was in Nanaimo, but now it's missing from Nanaimo and reported by family in Saskatchewan.

>>On October 2, 2020 Sidney Mantee was reported missing by his mother in Nanaimo, British Columbia. On March 13 or 14, 2021 at approximately 1500 hrs, it was reported that Sidney was last seen at the intersection of King Edward Avenue and Rideau Street in Ottawa, Ontario. Sidney was blocking traffic and seemed confused.<<

Police search Nanaimo lake for evidence of foul play in missing person's case
''Specially trained RCMP officers have converged at a lake in Nanaimo to search for evidence in a suspicious missing-persons case.

About 30 officers — members of tactical and forensic identification teams — are searching for a person they believe met with foul play in the past year, RCMP Const. Gary O’Brien said Thursday. The officers are from Nanaimo, elsewhere on Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland.''
''Police are also searching an apartment building at the corner of Rosehill and Vancouver Avenue, O’Brien said. “It’s a very detailed search.”

In May 2021, forensic investigators were at an apartment building at the corner of Rosehill Street and Vancouver Avenue, and RCMP also closed Diver Lake Park as part of the same investigation. At the time, police said the case related to a missing person who they believed had met with foul play.

In July, RCMP divers searched the waters near Pipers Lagoon and Neck Point parks and police revealed that those searches, as well as the ones in the spring, were related to the case of Mantee.

Woman, 26, charged with murder of Nanaimo man missing for two years - BC News

Two searches were conducted. In May of 2021, about 30 specially trained officers, including an underwater-recovery team, searched Nanaimo’s Diver Lake for Mantee’s body and other evidence. Then RCMP divers searched waters off Nanaimo, at Neck Point Park and Piper’s Lagoon. They would not say whether Mantee’s body was found in the ocean search.

During those searches, neighbours told CTV News that police were asking them about Mantee. Neighbours also said that he lived with a woman in the apartment, and that it was common to hear screaming arguments coming from the unit. "The screaming was like death defying screams, you know?" said one neighbour. "It wasn't just like, get out of here screams. Someone was [angry] about something."
