It is always difficult when this happens and a suspects avoids justice from the courts. But do most families honestly prefer to endure a trial? Where the outcome is always in doubt, not to mention the pain of hearing and reading the horrible details for weeks or months surrounding a trial? Not to mention, Canada being far too gentle on many convicts regarding sentencing. Jmo

No family wants to endure a trial of a murdered loved one but they are ALWAYS there because they want justice. They deserve to know what happened and why and finally (if convicted) have some sort of closure.

The left hanging in limbo must be terrible for the families, they may never get the answers they need to heal.

It's frustrating to know that DS was allowed alone time, but then that makes me wonder did he appear normal not having any mental impairment, as long as he was kept away from the other prisoners he would be safe

Very sad DS needed to stand trial, if he doesn't recover fully we will never know if DS is purely evil or does he have some delusional psychotic mental impairment which went undetected by friends and family.

I keep wondering why Terry and Hailey, what made them the targets

Sick of people that jump all over Corrections Canada saying they are responsible and should be held responsible. They cannot babysit every prisoner for 24 hours a day. They do what they can, giving each prisoner an evaluation. They take away things like that inmates can harm themselves with, and they do their best to make sure that prisoners don't have an opportunity to hurt themselves, but lets face it, if someone really wants to hurt themselves, they can and will do it. We can put everybody in a rubber room with straightjackets on can we?

Do you guys know how many people know how many honest, hard working people kill themselves every year because they are being hounded by the Canada Revenue Agency? I'd rather our tax dollars went towards keeping those people safe than a 🤬🤬🤬 like DS.

It's hard for any of use to know what the families want. Do they want this just to end (DS dies sooner than later from his jail incident) and start the healing process?? I'm sure they don't want to re-live the events that took place?? But on the flip-side do they want answers to why poor TB and HDB were targeted?? Does DS's family want answers as to why DS did what he did?? So hard for any of us to speculate what the families want - and I would reckon that the families are even torn as to what they want.

I do believe LE knows what transpired, but do they know why?? Did DS explain a motive?? As for DS having a lawyer and never "spilling the beans" on the motive - yes very possible as many murderers on trial will just remain completely silent and give very little explanations....but if he does end up going to trial and has to look the victims' families in the eyes then who knows maybe he will break down and "spill the beans".....??

I know the majority of us websleuther's want asnwers - that's a primary reason we are all part of this online community.

As for justice - I personally think that DS taking his own life is the "easy" way out. I would rather him make a full recovery and face the consequences. However, part of me is skeptical about that too because our justice system isn't always great at providing true justice (in the eyes of many).

Maybe the "ideal" (opinion) outcome is that DS dies from his jail incident but he has already given all the information and his motive to LE, so then LE can then provide all the details just once and it will hopefully provide some closure and won't have to be re-lived trial after trial after trial.

And as for the prison system failing the justice system - I'm extremely disappointed that his happened (suicide attempt). Justice Department spokesperson MD said: "When an incident occurs we do a thorough review and take action to prevent it from happening again" - that makes me think this is the first time an incident like this as happened because the preventative measures would have been in place already if this had happened before. And I find that very hard to believe. Someone failed miserably at their job, and I'm truly disappointed over that.

Orchestration from outside could mean things like someone pressuring DS for money owed, for whatever reason. Or maybe someone thought TB knew something, whether or not he did. Remember, DS was supposed to be going to court in Lethbridge on theft charges, until he went on the run with Hailey.

We have to ask why DS would allegedly steal. Much theft is related to addictions.

TB worked in a bar and grill. Sometimes things go on in such places. TB may have overheard something, or someone may have thought he did.

It is very important to look at TB's normal routine, and what was out of the norm on Sunday and Monday in order to try to understand. Did DS break in thinking no one was home? Or, as in many small towns, did he know exactly where TB would be and when, due to having friends where TB worked, and friends in the neighborhood where TB lived?

Was DS someone who was easily influenced by others?

I've pointed out some of the events that happened in this area on the same weekend as the murders of Terry and Hailey. There was a drug bust in Cranbrook Sunday morning. Six were arrested, two released. One was from the Elk Valley. Hours later, TB And HDB were murdered.

Back in 2013, a Fernie resident with the same surname as a co-worker of TB was caught with $15,000 and drugs. Proceeds of crime , police said. The same surname, different given name, was in the same wedding party as DS. The website for that is defunct.

On another note, did TB work out at a gym?

The thing is we really know NOTHING about the people involved here. TB for instance had a FB page that for the past couple of years contained nothing but photos of him and his daughter. The public opinion of this guy is that he is a nice guy, possibly father of the year because of that. On the other hand we have CD's father stating that he was trouble, not very well liked, and he had a growing criminal record. The perception is that he turned his life around after his daughters birth, but does a leopard ever really change his spots? Sure he was probably respectable when Hailey was in his care, but what did he do when she wasn't there? CDs dad said all the young people in the town were on drugs, and considering his low opinion of TB, its not difficult to assume that he was probably involved as well. So what brought TB and DS together in the late hours of a Sunday night? Sometimes the obvious answer is the correct one, that one of them needed drugs and the other was to supply them.

Maybe DS calls TB and heads over. TB prepares his purchase, but DS wants all of it so he stabs him to death. Hailey wakes up hearing the commotion, DS panics and grabs the screaming girl. Obviously from the neighbour's account he was in a hurry to get out of there. DS had no intention of harming Hailey, but she had seen him. DS drives to a familiar secluded spot to think. At that point he can really find no other reasonable solution but to kill her.

Again its all speculation, but it does fit the little evidence we do have.

I tend to think psychologically about cases and motive, and I think for disturbed people there is often a close link between homicide and suicide. They want to kill themselves but there is a very strong instinct for self-preservation. For someone who lacks empathy, it's easier to kill other people. It helps to understand the almost commonplace scenario of a man committing murder/suicide of his family.

I also think it's possible that although his friendship with CD was dropped by her when she got involved with Terry, she may have been very important to DS. It's pretty common for a teen girl's 'sweet guy friend' to be madly in love with her.

People who present with homicidal ideation also have a higher risk of suicide. This shows the need for an assessment of suicide risk in people with thoughts of violence towards others.

True, we know next to nothing about any of these people. All we've heard is from family and friends who have their own biases. Whenever I hear in media reports that someone "was turning his life around", it generally means this is someone who was or still is involved with crime (drugs, gangs, etc.). In TB's case, they said he had turned his life around. It is very hard to get out of some of these situations. Once you're in, you're in for life.

Many of the things said are from people who haven't been around in years.

KD's statement about the drug problems in the area was a bit broad. I'm sure not everyone is doing drugs, but a lot are. Just look up all the reported drug busts.

We also don't know about all the family members, and what they do. This may be relevant.

Whatever the truth, we all know an innocent child lost her life.

Do you have a link to what your stating about CD's father's comments?

Lots of speculation towards DS being mentally ill/disturbed/etc. I think it is also important to speculate that MAY NOT even be true. Yes, there is some evidence that points to that (local residents saying he was "odd"; may have seeked psychiatric help in the past; etc.)....but there is NO hard evidence (as of yet) that more or less proves that DS is mentally ill.
Yes, it is extremely hard to rationalize how someone could take another's life if they are not mentally ill, and especially so when one life is a 2 year old child. But I personally am not 100% on board yet with the idea that he MUST be mentally ill.
He also attempted to take his own life and yes another indicator of mental issues, but let's also keep in mind that if he is not mentally ill he would be well aware that prison life could be extremely difficult for him as a child killer, and maybe he figured it best to "avoid" that possible situation. Because it is way too early for DS or anyone to know if he was going to be put in a mental institution or general population prison or maybe other.

And for these reasons, that's why I still think a "crime of passion" is possible....not saying that all crimes of passion are committed by non-mentally ill individuals but if DS is NOT mentally ill at all I personally think a crime of passion is the basis of the motive......also IMO a "deal gone bad" is another non-mentally-ill motive that is possible.

Well he was due in court last Tuesday, Sept 15th (right after murder)....he was going to court because he was caught in a B&E. How was he caught?? Who caught him??

As for being put up to it - I also have my own theory on that.

Saretzky was, however, known to police. According to Alberta Justice, he had been charged with housebreaking and possession of stolen property under $5,000 stemming from a break-in at a Blairmore home in August.

The homeowner in that case, Ray MacGregor, told The Canadian Press he was not home at the time. But he said he heard from his neighbours that it happened overnight and some liquor was stolen. Someone returned the next day and was caught in the act of trying to steal a TV.

Yes, that's the incident I'm referring to. But I'm wondering how he was caught......did someone know about him committing the B&E the night before and tip the police off?? Were the police waiting there for him?? Did someone see him doing it and then informed the police?? Did DS brag about B&E number 1 to someone and then was "ratted" out and easily caught for B&E number 2?? Did he try to sell the liquor to the "wrong person" and it made catching him for B&E number 2 easy? Did DS tell someone of his plans to commit a B&E??
Those are questions that I am wondering about - they MAY be part of the basis for DS's motive....maybe. And if him getting caught and the potential conviction was part of the basis for his motive, then one would be lead to believe that TB would have had something to do with DS being caught during B&E number 2.

I'm going to jump in here and say I agree with whomever posted that TBs neighbour, SK, probably holds the key to what happened being that he seems to know all the players involved (TB, CD, DS), and has likely been interviewed in depth by LEOs, which we will know nothing about until the trial, or the passing of DS.

On an unrelated note, I am glad we don't have the DP in Canada. Super glad. Something about it has never sat right with me and I don't think it ever will. Personally, I'd rather have someone sit in a cell forever, but that's just me.

imo, jmo, moo, etc etc.

I know someone who had a house left empty for a few months with a neighbour keeping an eye on it. Neighbour discovered it had been broken into, and some small things of little value were stolen. Reported it to police, who weren't particularly helpful, but informed owner that the thief/ves might very likely return. So the homeowner got someone to sleep in the house.

I can well imagine this being the scenario in this case. If someone was staying in the house they would call police when the van drove into the driveway and DS tried to get into the house. Blairmore is very small and LE could be there in seconds.

I'm going to guess it has something to do with the ongoing investigation, but is it surprising that no MSM outlets have interviewed neighbour SK further and asked him to elaborate on his knowledge of TB's and DS's relationship???

Maybe SK is pulling a no comment, or he has left the town to get out of the fire. I would leave, too.

sorry about the lack of proper punctuation, but I seem to have mashed my slash and quote buttons and gotten the dreaded accent aigu.
