Can anyone tell me if there has ever been a similar event during any other Canadian cases, where the suspect has either tried to or successfully killed themselves before standing trial?
It sounds like you are writing a movie. Fantasy. A serial killer enlisted DS in a cult and convinced him to Do this?
Umm... Okay...
And you say DS does not strike you as a pedophile? Do you KNOW DS to be able to make that judgement?
There seems to be a few people still lingering here waging a campaign against CD. As cryptic as you may think you're being, I personally think it's kind of sick to still be insinuating that she is involved. It is over a week later when no one else has been arrested or even connected to this crime.
Why on earth would DS try to kill himself if he acted with an accomplice? Surely a plea deal would have been struck if that were the case.
Force-feeding, most commonly by means of tubes inserted in the nose or mouth, is outlawed under a 1975 resolution of the World Medical Association.
It never even crossed my mind for more than a couple seconds that DS would be involved. In fact, I really don't think that her shoes fit any of the footprints left behind in the area over that time period.
As far as my feelings that DS doesn't strike me as being a pedophile, this impression is that it is not coming across clairvoyantly that he is one. Doesn't mean that he isn't but in so far as the primary motive I'm not getting anything on that.
Victoria Crow Shoe being discovered on the shore of the Oldman River Reservoir on September 13th does; however, fit the footprint of a SK I have been chasing for 10 years now and it is very difficult for me to not acknowledge the proximity and timing along with several name associations with the Blanchette murders which may also be just a coincidence. No, this is definitely not a fantasy being close to a masochistic sociopath and knowing the inner workings of his mind; rather it's a horror.
Where intent is issued and a play by play enactment is warranted then by all means let us wander through the woods to Grandmother's house. You see, there is a parable here that reconciles the advances of the mind based on a reality that is created within the confines of a solitary re-enactment and in order to understand exactly how a SK or mass murderer issues these enactments we must first understand where his mind is stable in it's comprehension of the world around him. My theory remains that where a metaphor such as this is present he is stuck in the place of wonderment of an early age, secure in the fairy tales of his youth. When you reach down very deep into the abyss of his mind and pull out that stable place and combine it with all the misjudgments, as he sees them as being inflicted upon himself you will gain a greater understanding of how the conditioning has been applied to that place in time where the stability of all that surrounded him was found in these fairy tales. It's a malady of sorts in which the aggression is applied to the earliest time of moral conditioning through the use of children's fairy tales. And it is more common than we think. There are a lot of Princesses laying in the woods that didn't make it to the ball. Why? Because the wicked stepmother didn't want them to. And why should it matter what she wanted? Because of all the beatings that this SK took as a child from his father at the same time he was being read fairy tales by his mother.
My theory and MOO.
They would most certainly give the family the details if requested. They have the right to full disclosure once the information will not affect the trial (if he passes or they plea him out).

I never read fairy tales as a child, nor did I read them to my children, so I really have no idea what you are talking about as I'm not really familiar with the storylines. However, what I can gather from above is that you have a rather active imagination and are reaching quite far on this, IMO. No disrepect, but I believe the storyline of this case will be far more simplistic than you think.
I do not believe they would get access to any information about crimes committed while a juvenile, or psychiatric treatment, unless it was court-ordered. I do not believe they would know about crimes for which he received a pardon, or charges which were dropped. I'm not sure if crimes committed out of the country would be disclosed, if known.
They may never know about school records, medical records or abuse as a child, if it applies in this instance.
They may already have heard rumors about such things, if they apply in this case, because this is a closely-connected community.
They would never hear from his own mouth why he did what he did, even if the answer is "because".
Some things come out of a trial at sentencing that are not part of the trial, so anything less than a trial may give you the " what" without "why".
Boy, there's a lot of deep thinking going on in here overnight.
How about he simply killed Dad because of a beef between the two of them and the daughter was abducted and taken because he didn't really know what to do about her ?
Ultimately, if he didn't want to get caught, she had to go as well, because she knew who he was.
Saretzky isn't some sort of a criminal mastermind, he's just a pot smoking bum that most likely got higher than a kite on a meth and alcohol cocktail and went on a killing spree for some unknown reason. He'll explain it sooner or later, if he hasn't already.
The paragraph 89 is most likely because of the 1975 Declaration of Tokyo by the World Medical Association, as it's guiderules for physicians how to act regarding matters "concerning torture, and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment in relation to detention and imprisonment". The 6th paragraph says:I'm not sure what you are referencing here but it doesn't apply to inmates in Canada. Force feeding an inmate is considered "treatment" and if they are deemed mentally competent, they can refuse. However, if they are deemed not competent, they can be force fed (under medical supervision) due to their mental state
Justice Law website - GOC
89. The Service shall not direct the force-feeding, by any method, of an inmate who had the capacity to understand the consequences of fasting at the time the inmate made the decision to fast.
- Where a prisoner refuses nourishment and is considered by the physician as capable of forming an unimpaired and rational judgment concerning the consequences of such a voluntary refusal of nourishment, he or she shall not be fed artificially. The decision as to the capacity of the prisoner to form such a judgment should be confirmed by at least one other independent physician. The consequences of the refusal of nourishment shall be explained by the physician to the prisoner.
I'm guessing this was already posted. I haven't had time to read yesterday posts yet.

@tarabull: Do you think there is any way to find out who appeared in court in Cranbrook on Monday, September 14, 2015 on drug charges from the arrest on Sunday, September 13?
It would also be interesting to know who was slated to appear as a witness in the Lethbridge case involving DS and the stolen property.
