When they are willing to do that I will be convinced they actually believe a person is rehabilitated. Unreal.

WINNIPEG - A man who beheaded a fellow passenger on a Greyhound bus in Manitoba will soon be allowed to leave a mental hospital without an escort.

Thursday's ruling by the Criminal Code Review Board means Vince Li will be on his own in public for the first time since he stabbed Tim McLean and then ate parts of his body six years ago.

Whoa. What about the public? This is just as crazy as beheading someone on a freaking greyhound bus.

My mother worked with criminally insane & also people who were criminally insane. Sometimes she accompanied them on "transitions", like eating at a restaurant or shopping in stores, interacting with people who had no clue. She would like to have had them wear a blinking sign that said something like "caution, I killed my young child." And she came home & cried when some were released.

An over-used word, but certainly appropriate to this situation:

What is missing in this scenario for me is, who will be accountable if and when Li re-offends? I have to say if as I can't predict the future actions of this person. The past behavior worries me a lot.

So far Li has not been held accountable for his horrific actions and is deemed 'low risk' to re-offend. What is low-risk Dr Kremer?

So far I cannot find any credentials for Dr Steven Kremer on line - what are his accomplishments? Can he truly predict future behavior of someone? I would think members of the medical community worldwide would be lining up for training with him.

Imo, Dr SK is full of himself. I think the Crown Attorney in this case is not much better and the judge even worse. This action by all 3 of them is reckless and irresponsible, imo.

It could take a day, a year, 5 years before something goes wrong, and I'm guessing the last people the press will be able to locate is the 3 people that let him loose on the public. By then, all 3 can say 'it's not my job'.

At the very least, a second medical opinion and evaluation is warranted for public safety, imo. This medical person should be from another country for impartiality - the US or UK would do it for me. This would also bring more experience to the table.

I also have to think Li's safety is at serious risk - people are 'taken out' for less than what Li did.

US is also very lenient when it comes to criminally insane. I don't trust this so-called system for one second.
If you ask me we need to change these laws asap.

I can't find the article online yet, but the Winnipeg Free Press has just tweeted today's front page. Retired RCMP Ken Barker has committed suicide. They are saying he was haunted by being one of the first responders to the scene of the bus, and never got over his PTSD. Very sad.

Very well written and insightful article. It was very brave of his wife and sister to share personal details about this tragic end to a good man's life. What was most alarming was the fact that he ''only had his dog'' as a partner and could not defrag at the end of the day. Other officers had a partner with whom they could share concerns and support each other.

PTSD and depression in general terms are very much stigmas in many workplaces. Li's release really retriggered this officer's memories. Li's ''other'' victim and we know he won't be held responsible for this and the original crime - travesty.

"With Vince Li getting in the paper about his walks, he started getting flashbacks," she said.

I had never heard of this case before. Oh this poor man. :cry: How absolutely horrifying what that crazed man did, now he's free ? :scared:Unbelievable, a travesty.

This horrible incident was beyond comprehension -- the worst part of course is that Li was not held ''criminally responsible '' due to mental illness and now he's out on day passes in the community -- oh joy.

This case perfectly demonstrates insanity of the insanity laws.
Insane one goes to the hospital, where doctors fill him full of meds.
When the insane one is on the meds, he could act more or less normal.
But what is going to happen in the real world when doctors decide the insane one is fine to be out and about?

I really do understand the anger of the public here. I really do.

But I have to say that there is a bit of a difference between the understanding of laymen and professionals.

This isn't a situation where someone takes a sip of a beer and suggests, "Hey, let's let Vince Li out, just for laughs."

In fact, there are likely some legal questions that could be raised here about how any information about his case -- one which became a medical matter rather than a legal one some years ago -- has been made public. But that is probably another discussion altogether.

The doctors who made this decision did not do so casually or irresponsibly. They will bear the burden of whatever happens next, and they know that. But all things considered, I don't think that we'll ever hear about this person again.

I know that this is not going to be a popular opinion, but so be it; this is what we know from science and expertise, even though our emotions may say otherwise.
