CANADA Canada - Toronto police seek "Ken" for info about 1980's missing persons case

I wonder if this is at all connected to Bernardo. He was in Scarborough in the late 1980s wasn't he?

I hope LE finds "Ken", no matter what case they are working on.

Does anyone have any ideas as to any unsolved missing cases for Toronto and Scarborough in the late 1980's?

Why would they still be investigating Bernardo? He's locked up FOREVER. Unless they're going after Homolka........

Didn't the media dub Bernardo and Homolka the "Ken and Barbie" killers?

Anyhoo, the "Ken" and "Scarborough" sort of leapt off the screen at me, although this appears to be something totally separate.

I first thought it may have something to do with the disappearance of Elizabeth Bain or that of Mabel Wong, both of whom vanished in 1990. The article I read does seem to suggest that the disappearance happened in Scarborough in the late 1980's, so that would rule out Wong.

She was the woman who disappeared after leaving her home in the west end. Her car was discovered sometime later. I guess the fact that both she and this male subject are of Asian ancestry made me link the two.

Bain has the connection to U of T Scarborough, where this man apparently frequented or attended.

The year 1990 is close enough, since there is nothing concrete in the information given for us to be too precise.

I still think it may be a case that has not received much or any publicity.

Getting Homolka...now THAT would be a holiday gift for the world.

The Toronto Police Service requests assistance identifying a man who may be able to provide information surrounding a possible disappearance many years ago.

Would they say "a possible disappearance" if it was a case of someone who has definitely been missing for decades?

The wording made me wonder if it's a new tipster who is saying "so and so was last seen in the eighties in suspicious circumstances, I wonder if something bad happened", but it was never reported before so the police have to first verify that the person is really missing and Ken might know something about that.

Good point but why would the tipster go to LE now? These cases are frustrating.........wish they would release more information to the public.

What do you all think is his race? Filipino?

Maybe they should release an aged progressed photo!

Because they were frightened of someone or something at the time that may not be as much of a threat now? JMHO

He is east Asian, but could be Filipino, Chinese, or Vietnamese, etc.

It is anyone's guess. I've seen light skinned Filipinos (mixed with Chinese, Japanese or Europeans), who look similar to this man.

Yeah it's like a guessing game... if it's as vague to Ken as it is to us, if I was him I might not dare to call the police if I don't know what it is even about and if "he is not suspected of any crime" is code for "he is suspected of a crime but we're not saying".

I dunno, I suppose the tipster, if any, might have been hoping or expecting that the missing person would crop up somewhere, but after all this time he's been convinced that it's not going to happen and the MP is really gone. Or he was afraid of getting mixed up with the police but now he's close to death and wants to clear this up or the person he's afraid of is in jail or the statute of limitations ran out on his own drug crimes or... Or he's been concerned all along and maybe reported it before but it wasn't taken seriously at the time but now he read a MP cold case story or talked with someone or something else triggered the memories and he wants to have it cleared up as long as everyone's still alive.

What's the statute of limitations in the area? the police might be wanting to take a fresh look at old files if they're close to SOL.

I am assuming that you are writing from the U.S., Donjeta.

Under the Criminal Code of Canada, there aren't many crimes which have a "statute of limitations". A crime can be prosecuted years or decades later if the police can come to a Crown prosecutor with a case that is likely to lead to conviction.

Bumping.

Do you recognize the man in the picture? If so, police would like to speak with you.

Police say they’re interested in speaking with him about the events being investigated.

but...we don't know if Ken is his name, or an English-language nickname he used. English-speakers may have heard his name as Ken, but it was Kien, Qen, Qin.

Has LE released this picture & request to Chinese language newspapers, in Toronto or elsewhere?

Interesting tale building here.

It could be that whoever this missing person is, the individual who reported them missing knew that they were hanging out with a guy named Ken, who went to the University of Toronto

It could be a case of not knowing of him well, maybe having seen him from a distance, but not knowing much about him. Then, going through publically available photos provided by police and pointing him out. JHMO.
