Woman killed in PATH stabbing near financial district
"Police responded to a call in the PATH food court at the concourse level of King and Bay Streets around 7 p.m.

A woman believed to be between 20 to 30 years old was found with stab wounds in life threatening condition. Paramedics began life saving procedures but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say a male suspect fled on foot but they did not find a weapon at the scene.

A witness told CityNews the suspect had a long knife and the victim was behind the counter at one of the eateries.

The suspect is described as a white man in his 30s, five-feet-eight inches tall, thin to average build, with dark hair and a thin mustache. He was last seen wearing a black or dark hoodie with a white t-shirt, dark pants and dark shoes."

Police believe fatal stabbing of woman in PATH system was targeted
“At this time, officers from our forensics investigations unit are on scene collecting evidence and there are a number of officers here canvassing the area, speaking to witnesses, as well as reviewing security footage from multiple security cameras that are in the area,” Poletta said.

“There were a number of witnesses that were present during the incident and investigators are currently speaking with those witnesses as well.”

Poletta stated “it appears this was a targeted attack,” but said he could not comment any further.

When asked if the suspect and victim were known to each other, Toronto police spokesperson Katrina Arrogante said that is “undetermined at this time.”

“It is quite early in our investigation,” she said. “At any time we have a violent incident like this, it’s something that we would like to alert the public about so we are hoping for their assistance in trying to obtain more information regarding the suspect himself, what direction he might have gone, in the hopes of capturing him.”

"Police have identified Toronto's 17th homicide victim, who was killed Wednesday night in what's believed to be a targeted stabbing in the city's downtown PATH system, as Rae Cara Carrington.

Carrington, 51, of Toronto, was stabbed multiple times near a food court in the underground Commerce Court, in the area of King and Bay streets, around 7 p.m."

"Police have characterized the incident as "brazen" and said they received several 911 calls reporting the stabbing because it happened in a "very populated area."

"The stabbing took place not far from where newlywed RosemarieJunor was fatally stabbed in a Shoppers Drug Mart in 2015 by a stranger, RohinieBisesar, who was found not criminally responsible late last year."

Is it just me, or have there been a lot of stuff coming out of Toronto lately. I know its probably a relatively safe city, but it just seems to have had some bad luck lately.

Did not see that report coming! That is truly devastating. Condolences to the family & friends.

I don't think Toronto is as safe as its reputation any more. There is much higher chance of being 'accidentally' getting caught in the gang crossfire and robberies/assaults are wayyy up.

Duncan Sinclair, 19, remanded in cuffs for death of mother
April 13, 2019
"Duncan O’Neil Sinclair, 19, has made a court appearance Saturday on a first-degree murder charge in the stabbing death of his mother in the Commerce food court in the downtown PATH business area this week. Witnesses described fearful screaming when the mom, Rae Cara Carrington, 51, was stabbed with a large knife at her workplace in a salad bar. She died shortly after. Sinclair was dressed in a regulation white jumper and was handcuffed as he met the judge just after 10 a.m. His lawyer requested a publication ban and Sinclair was ordered not to contact nine individuals in relation to the case. Reporting since the Wednesday evening attack has revealed Carrington was the mother of eight children and that she lived without them at a downtown women”s shelter. Digging also revealed her husband is well-known to police for what are said to be “multiple criminal offenses” according to the Toronto Star."

Wow. Poor woman. It sounds as though she has lived a very sad and difficult life. :(

The trial started today. It seems like it’ll be interesting - the kid’s father was convicted of abuse and even the Crown described them having a traumatic childhood, while he’s on video committing the murder.

Curious whether the lack of a plea deal (to, say, second degree murder with an agreed upon mid/upper range minimum before parole) is the Crown feeling very confident their case is airtight and worth the expense of a 4 week trial or whether the defence rejected that to argue he’s NCR or some other strategy.

why is it taking so long for these cases to go to trial? Tell me he wasn't out on bail this whole time.

From the link above - The lethal encounter lasted only nine minutes. The 51-year-old woman was pronounced dead on the scene at 7:17 p.m. She died from 11 separate stab wounds that fractured three of her ribs, punctured her liver, kidney, both lungs and heart.

ONLY 9 MINUTES?? omg that is insane. That poor woman.

''Santora told the jury that at the time of the killing, Carrington was "trying to get her life back on track" after a complicated separation from her husband. Court heard that when she died, Sinclair's father was in police custody as a result of allegations of domestic and child abuse.

Santora provided glimpses of the family's history, telling the jury that the children were isolated, did not attend school, and did not interact with the community in any "normal childhood ways." They didn't receive regular medical care, moved at least 26 times, and were "taught to distrust authorities," she said.

"Because [Carrington] worked to support the family, [the father] was left home with the children, and his control over the household was unwavering," she said.''

''Santora also laid out evidence the jury is expected to hear later at the trial. She said after leaving the food court, Sinclair used GO Transit to travel to Georgetown, Kitchener, Barrie and finally Midland, Ont., which is more than 100 km north of Toronto.

Court heard that Sinclair was located at a YMCA in Midland when an employee noticed that he was repeatedly conducting online searches about the investigation. She then alerted police.''

''The trial is expected to take three to four weeks.''

Video of what happened preceding the murder, and the only photo I’ve ever seen of the victim, here.

21-year-old man on trial for stabbing his mother to death in Toronto PATH food court in 2019 - Toronto | Globalnews.ca

Maybe I’m reading too much into it because I’m trying to mentally reverse engineer what his defence might be, but I can’t tell whether the quotes of his statement make it sound like his speech/logic is a bit odd, or whether that’s just because of the out of context nature of them.

Guilty - it looks like there wasn’t really a viable defence strategy. If I had to guess, his lawyer likely pushed for a plea deal and either the Crown or Duncan rejected it.

Really sad story all the way around, imo. His mother is dead and that’s a tragedy, and while he was obviously legally mentally competent enough to be criminally responsible, it’s so sad that a lifetime of abuse seemed to have given him a warped perception of reality and relationships.
