Updated 38 minutes ago

Police investigating the murder of Valerie Xavier have found a body on a business property north of Brockville.

But it could take until Friday before they confirm that the remains are those of the 80-year-old Brockville woman.

City and provincial police officers were working at a crime scene this morning at the Mr. Gas property on County Road 29.

Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Kristine Rae said police discovered the body in the early hours of Wednesday morning and cannot yet confirm the victim's identity or the cause of death.

As of mid-morning, Rae could also not confirm whether the remains were those of a man or woman.

A post-mortem examination has been scheduled for Friday in Ottawa, said Rae.

She would not discuss what information led police to the site north of Brockville, saying only it was "information they got through their investigation."

Staff at the gas station would not speak to media.

A 16-year-old Brockville male has been charged with second-degree murder in Xavier's death. He is also charged with stealing Xavier's car and credit card.

What a tragic end for a selfless woman who spent her life helping others. If this young man is responsible, and it appears as though he likely is, I hope he isn't coddled with a slap on the wrist by our young offenders system.

Positive ID on body

Police confirmed Thursday that the body found a day earlier near a gas station north of Brockville is that of Valerie Xavier, an 80-year-old Brockville resident police say was murdered
She would not discuss what information led police to confirm the victim's identity, a development that initially was only expected to happen Friday during a post-mortem examination scheduled at the Ottawa Hospital.
Police are now waiting to learn the victim's cause of death, and other details, from that examination.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call city police at 613-342-0127.

For family members, however, many painful moments still lie ahead.

"Now that we've found her, that's one more part of the puzzle gone," said Corfe.

"We'll concentrate, I guess, on the trial."

Police remaining silent on murder victim's post-mortem
Brockville Recorder and Times - 12 Oct 2010
Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Kristine Rae told The Recorder and Times Tuesday that police are withholding the information "to protect the integrity of" the ongoing investigation into the murder of the 80-year-old Brockville woman.

The examination, done Friday at the Ottawa Hospital, reconfirmed what police had already announced: that the body was definitely that of Xavier.

Large crowd sees young murder suspect
Brockville Recorder and Times - updated 6 days ago
A bail hearing for a Brockville teen charged in the murder of 80- year-old Valerie Xavier was adjourned in Brockville Court Wednesday until next week.

The hearing for the 16-year-old male, who cannot be idenfied under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, will resume Wednesday, Nov. 3 at 10 a.m.

Wednesday's brief hearing was presided over by Justice of the Peace Michael O'Toole.

A large courtroom crowd, including family and friends of Xavier and the accused, plus many people on different legal matters, was scanned with a wand by police searching for weapons upon entering .

The suspect was escorted by police through a separate entrance to the prisoner's box, where he spoke briefly with lawyer Larry O'Brien.

Wearing a dark sweatshirt and shoulder-length hair that framed a boyish face, he stood throughout the minute-long proceeding, showing no emotion.

From July 2013:

http://www.recorder.ca/2013/07/13/killer-in-xavier-murder-gets-seven-years

The 19-year-old convicted murderer of Valerie Xavier will serve seven years for his September 2010 crime, the maximum allowed for second-degree murder under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Four years of that sentence will be served in a custodial facility, which will have an intensive rehabilitative component, and the final three years will be served under supervision in the community. While the killer has been in custody since October 5, 2010, he will not receive any credit for time served, save for 28 days since entering his guilty plea.
