Police say ransom demand was made in Wanzhen Lu abduction | CBC News
Police have yet to reveal details about why Lu may have been targeted.

The CBC has confirmed that he owned a unit in that Markham condominium building where he was forced into a van.

Records show he purchased the unit outright in 2018.

Police had also previously confirmed that Lu drove several luxury cars, and on Tuesday, CBC confirmed that there are liens against him in connection to four vehicles: a Ferrari 488 GTB, a Lamborghini Huracan, a Rolls Royce Wraith and a Land Rover Range Rover Velar, which documents show he was leasing.

The Ferrari must be parked at a friend's place. Haven't seen it in any of the photos circulating.
About $300K for that particular model

I have a thoery perhaps WL's family isn't as wealthy as he makes things appear. They are probably pretty well off but not wealthy to the point the kid could comfortably afford all those vehicles. It's possible he leveraged the condo to buy the cars. Not difficult to do since they were all leased. Condo is worth at least $500K in that building, up to about $800K for the premium units. The Range Rover might've been bought outright at first (gift from parents) and then later used as collateral for the other cars or some other lavish expense. Would explain the recent lien that was put on it. WL must've missed some payments recently. Add in the expensive clothes, girls, insurance on the cars, interest on extra loans and it doesn't take long to fall behind on payments. His comfortable allowance is no longer comfortable enough for the hole he dug himself.

Maybe kidnappers realized later he wasn't really all that wealthy , maybe they accessed his debit cards and found the accounts empty. Made a ransom demand but there was no money to be paid, everything is tied up in debt. By that time 🤬🤬🤬🤬 has hit the fan and they're all over the news. So one or more of them cut him loose in cottage country, on their way out west of Ontario.

You see the third rate school he attends , it doens't exactly scream of Chinese Elite status.
We know how the truly elite have no issues getting their kids into the best schools.

The last guy to get arrested gets the worst plea deal. It’s a race for third place now.

Ransom demand was made. But we don't know if it was paid or not. Maybe the reason they let him go was because the ransom was paid and LE was able to trace where the payment went.

Aren't ransoms typically paid in bitcoin today, simply because it is untraceable?

“Wanzhen Lu, 22, claims that three days after he was snatched from the underground parking lot of his building, he managed to jump out of a moving vehicle despite having his hands duct-taped in front of him, a police source told yorkregion.com”

Markham kidnap victim escaped by jumping out of moving van, police source says | The Star

““I think because of the cars, someone thought he had more than he did,” the source said.”

My prior theory that the family may not be as wealthy as they appear seems to be at least somewhat accurate.

You can’t make this stuff up. So far we know dumb, dumber, dumberer and dumbest left a witness , kidnap the guy in plain view of cameras, leave 3 luxury vehicles behind and then duct tape his hands in front allowing him to escape. And it looks like they may have left evidence , fingerprints or DNA in the mini van .

Hopefully the quick arrests will discourage other dumb people from committing 3rd world crimes in Canada.

I'd rather have dumb people committing crimes (thereby getting caught) than smart people committing crimes and getting away with it!

Very glad these men have been caught, although they've made so many stupid mistakes that it makes the whole situation even more bizarre.

Complete speculation, imagination, fwiw, imo, ect...
Perhaps the accused have very common names?
Police release names of people charged in Project Traveller raids

Good find dotr. Even the age matches. Although it is likely a common name in the Somali community. If it is the same guy, they might want to look at others on that list, where they are and what they're doing now as well as on the night of the abduction.

According to recent articles WL claims he was being moved and jumped from a moving van. So apparently there was no intent for him to be "released".

Car found submerged in the Humber River yesterday, not far from the Somalian Dixon gang territory in Etobicoke
Police investigate after car found submerged in Humber River

It wasn't mentioned in the article so I did a little digging, the vehicle submerged is a 2017+ current generation Honda CRV.

Same body and window lines, j shaped tail-lights, low profile spoiler and sleek headlights.

Maybe dumb-dumbs are getting smarter? Drowning a vehicle is a good way to wash evidence.

The area where this vehicle was found is about 10km from the Dixon Rd gang area. Unlikely this vehicle is involved in this IMO. We don't even know if any of the suspects are part of or connected to the Dixon Rd Somali community although I admit it is likely. WL claims he jumped from a van. Come to think of it, if he was hooded, how did he know he was in a van? Or did he just assume he was in the same vehicle that was involved in his abduction?

The article does state that he is from a wealthy Chinese family. Seems like his mother's side of the family is wealthy and his father makes a good living as well. He certainly fits the profile of a fuerdai.
But he may have been stretching the boundaries of what his parents were willing to pay for.

The question is, why didn't these guys go after the vehicles or his bank card in an attempt to drain his bank account if they thought he was rich. Why didn't he have his wallet with him when he had been coming home from shopping and driving his vehicle? What about his cell phone? What happened to that? Nothing is adding up and by reading that article it appears that LE aren't satisfied with the "random abduction for ransom" theory either. They're still entertaining all possibilities.
