'At 5:39 p.m., Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) issued an emergency alert pertaining to a unknown male who is wanted in connection with homicide at 2125 Lynn Heights Dr., just east of Fairport Road and north of Finch Avenue.'

''In an email to CTV News Toronto, Acting Stf. Sgt. Joanne McCabe said an elderly female was stabbed by an unknown male who fled the area on foot. She said the incident happened just after 3 p.m.

The suspect is described by police as a brown male, who was last seen wearing a long black shiny trench coat to his ankles.

McCabe said they are working on getting a photo of the suspect''.

''The City of Pickering has closed all public facilities and cancelled all programs and classes “until further notice” as the manhunt continues for a suspect wanted for the fatal stabbing of an elderly woman.''

'Neighbours told CP24 it is usually a “nice,” “quiet” and “high-end” neighbourhood and maps show it is surrounded by green space.'
'The victim was allegedly stabbed by an unknown male, who fled from the area on foot.
The woman was rushed to a local trauma centre, where she was pronounced dead.'

Cannot recall other cases where an emergency alert was issued for a random stabbing, scary...... imo.
''In a media scrum at around 7:30 p.m., a member of Durham police said the attack was an “unprovoked attack.”
In a post on the Eyes of Durham Facebook page, John Meloche said, “They’ve ordered everyone to go into their homes and lock their doors..(they’re using) several dogs as well as a drone in the air.”
Meloche also noted several helicopters were in the air.''
''Police are asking residents in a Pickering neighbourhood to shelter in place after a “sadistic and cowardly” attack Thursday afternoon on an elderly woman who was stabbed to death in a suspected random attack.''

''Some websites had categorized the alert as terror related, but Durham police Chief Peter Moreira confirmed that was not the case.
“I can assure you … we have no information at this stage that this investigation is related to terrorism,” he told reporters at the West Division station.''

Yes, this seems highly unusual. This doesn't sound like a case of someone who was attacked by someone familiar to them. LE is obviously concerned about the state of mind of the perpetrator and consider him (presumably a male) a risk to the public.

''Durham Regional Police Chief Peter Moreira told reporters the attack was captured on video, but the search for the suspect was “challenging” and included a large area. He said neighbouring police were being drawn into the search, while extra officers had been brought on duty to respond.

He said the suspect was a man wearing a surgical mask with a long, black, skinny jacket and was carrying a brown bag. Moreira said the suspect fled the area on foot and remained armed.''

''The emergency alert, issued outside of Pickering, is an extremely rare step for police to take in either a homicide or stabbing attack.

Moreira said he made the decision to issue the alert out of an abundance of caution because police didn’t know where the suspect was, nor did they have a motive for the attack.''

“Durham police arrest 13-year-old male in ‘sadistic and cowardly’ stabbing that killed a senior woman in Pickering“

13?!? Well, on the good side, they caught him so the residents can stop being scared of every noise they hear and no longer sheltering in place.

''In a news release later, police said a passerby found the woman on the ground suffering from traumatic injuries. She was rushed to a Toronto area trauma centre, where she died of her injuries. Police have not released the victim's age.

Through the video footage, police said they learned the woman was stabbed multiple times. The suspect fled on foot toward a wooded area before police arrived, they said.''

"You always see her outside kind of gardening or kind of walking around... The whole neighbourhood is like that, just a lot of friendly people out and about."

''People who live nearby told CTV News Toronto that the victim’s name is Eleanor and that she was in her early 80s.

They said the woman, who was gardening when she was attacked in broad daylight, was a kindergarten teacher and lived in the home with her husband.''

A retired kindergarten teacher, who lived there with her husband. Just doing gardening and enjoying the day before she walked the dog.Very sad to end her long life being stabbed to death by a crazed punk. News says he is 13, but other info disputes that age, arguing he is much older.
I don't care if he has a mental illness, where were his parents when he was caught on neighbourhood cameras stabbing things in peoples back yards and up by their doors at 3 am the night before. This "child" didn't become this overnight. He must have a long standing history of some type of mental defect.
The kids in school knew as they promptly released his old school photos with his name, and yes folks you can guess the rest of that description. It hasn't been released if he lives in neighbourhood, but he certainly knew how to run and elude police for a time being.
He probably approached Eleanor, and she of course chatted with him, until it was too late. All is caught on video by the way (thank goodness), but yes folks, he will do time in a bad boy school and be released within a year.
Thankfully he was caught before more victims, which they believe he was seeking out the night before. Note to all, the cameras won't save Eleanor, but might be a tool in solving future cases.. Camera up all!! Our life in Canada has changed dramatically, and it's not for the good.

My dad did bug spraying for her neighbour, apparently they talked just last week. She was concerned about the bug spray harming her garden. He assured her it’s safe. Lovely woman, this is so surreal. We’ll be attending the candlelight tonight. Rest in peace
