Yannick Bastien, 26, planned to go canoeing at Lake Minnewanka on Sept. 21 and hasn’t been heard from since. RCMP are now searching for him.


Yannick Bastien, 26, of Airdrie, had plans to take his canoe to Lake Minnewanka that day and has not been heard from since.

Banff RCMP recovered his truck and red canoe at Lake Minnewanka but there was no sign of Bastien.

Another call out on Facebook was made and today October 12th we have restarted the ground searches focusing on the south side of the lake and currently have approximately 20 active hikers.

Oh no. I was hoping it was way less time since he went missing. Three weeks is a long time. And he was near the lake.

The family of Yannick Bastien of Airdrie are hoping to get a measure of closure through the recovery of Yannick's body from the waters of Lake Minnewanka in Banff National Park and called on Cormican, an expert in the field of drowning victim recoveries, and someone who knows a great deal about closure, to do so.

Last fall, they got in touch with Keith Cormican, the founder of Bruce's Legacy, an organization headquartered in Black River Falls, Wisconsin. By that time, winter was settling into Canada and Cormican promised the family he would come to Canada and search for Yannick come summer. About a week ago, Cormican and his partner Beth Darst brought their boat and sophisticated sonar equipment to Banff to launch a search.

Cormican says while he can't find all of the victims he searches for he's hoping the search for Yannick ends successfully, despite the difficult circumstances. "We're going to do everything that we can for this family. They're here making sure we have everything we need. They're a very strong family that wants their son back in the worst way. They're not giving up, we can see that so we're going to hang with them as long as we can."
