Car drives into pedestrians at Liverpool FC victory parade. Man detained

The driver suspected of mowing down fans at Liverpool Football Club's victory parade is a 'lovely' family man who runs his own business, it emerged today.

The 53-year-old, who is being quizzed by detectives on suspicion of multiple attempted murders, driving under the influence of drugs and dangerous driving, is married with three teenage children, the Mail can reveal.

Neighbours of the company director - who lives in a smart, £300,000 four-bedroomed detached property on a neat estate - described him as a 'straight family man' with 'well-behaved children' who must have 'panicked in the moment.'

According to social media, he attended a local university and his wife of 20 years has also regularly posted happy pictures of the family enjoying holidays abroad, including to Disneyland.

I really dislike this "good family man" whitewashing of a drugged driver facing multiple charges of attempted murder.

Sarah Hammond, Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS Mersey-Cheshire statement

Sarah Hammond, Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS Mersey-Cheshire said:

The Crown Prosecution Service has today authorised Merseyside Police to charge Paul Doyle, 53 from West Derby, Liverpool, with dangerous driving, causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent, wounding with intent to cause GBH and attempted GBH, following a complex and ongoing investigation into an incident in Water Street, Liverpool on Monday 26 May, 2025.

The defendant will appear before Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on Friday 30 May, 2025.

The investigation is at an early stage. Prosecutors and police are continuing to work at pace to review a huge volume of evidence.

This includes multiple pieces of video footage and numerous witness statements. It is important to ensure every victim gets the justice they deserve.

The charges will be kept under review as the investigation progresses.

We know Monday’s shocking scenes reverberated around the city of Liverpool, and the entire country, on what should have been a day of celebration for hundreds of thousands of Liverpool FC supporters. Our thoughts remain with all those affected.

Criminal proceedings against the defendant are active and he has the right to a fair trial. It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information or media online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.

Please allow the legal process to take its course without undue speculation

BBC feed. These are the full charges -

Police confirm the seven charges that Paul Desmond Sanders Doyle faces are:

Two counts of unlawful and malicious wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm

Two counts of causing unlawful and malicious grievous bodily harm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm

Two counts of attempted unlawful and malicious grievous bodily harm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm

One count of dangerous driving

Charges are quite different compared to what they were arrested for. Interesting.

No drug offences and no attempted murder.
Attempted murder is a very difficult crime to prove, in that the prosecution would need to show that he was trying to kill people. GBH is much easier for the prosecution to get over the line.
