The Rainbow Bridge connecting the U.S. and Canada at Niagara Falls, New York, has been closed after a vehicle explosion, according to the FBI and local authorities.

The Niagara Falls mayor's office said the incident involved a vehicle crossing into the U.S. from Canada.

The FBI is at the scene.

Early reports say this is being investigated as an attempted terorrist attack. That makes sense to me, as the damage appears to be minimal, and that’s probably not the place you’d intend to set off a bomb.

Seems to be the case. I’m just wondering what the actual target was.

Ok, this makes sense. According to intelligence analyst, John Miller on CNN, the car had been selected for secondary screening. I imagine he knew he was done at the point and set it off.

I wonder if it was meant for those New York targets. This is shocking kinda but we are seeing more terrorists acts happening here in Canada, jmoo

There are a lot of part day crossings on that bridge. Canadians headed for NFNY to shop, for entertainment and similar. US tourists checking out the falls, the casinos and the gorge as well as Niagara on the Lake. Prior to 9/11, an ordinary vehicle with Ontario plates would hardly even pause headed into NFNY.
If you indicated you were going to return inside 24-hours, the US border control would check the driver's license and not even ask for ID from the remaining passengers in a car. Similar headed into Canada with NY plates. The same scenario at the Ambassador Bridge (Windsor, Detroit) and the Bluewater Bridge (Sarnia, Port Huron).

Much different today.

Scary stuff. Hoping it is an isolated incident, and not a preview of more to come.

No word on injuries?

I hope he was the only one.

Apparently there were two suspects in the vehicle. -CNN

Also, car entered bridge, accelerated to nearly 100 miles an hour and smashed into the secondary search area.

Might not be a bomb after all.

Two occupants in the car were killed in the explosion.

A border protection agent was injured in the blast. He's being treated for non-life threatening injuries at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, sources said.

An attempted terror attack on Rainbow Bridge at Niagara Falls today saw a car explode, causing a massive explosion at a toll checkpoint that killed the vehicle's two occupants.

<modsnip: Fox News is NOT an approved source.See Tricia's announcement at FOX News National is no longer an approved source>

It sounds as if the bridge crossing wasn't their target ?
(Not enough people  )
Wonder what their target was ?
Security cameras must have caught the car not only pulling up to the checkpoint, but exploding as well.
Of course that wouldn't be released yet.
Imo.

Red bolding mine.
Thanks for the link, @justme11 !

I thought I'd read elsewhere about the bpa being injured but couldn't find it.
Non-life threatening is good but could still be a serious injury.
Hope they'll be o.k.
Omo.

What I am seeing is that when told to pull over for secondary screening, hit the gas and headed the vehicle straight into the US checkpoint.

It’s messy right now, so who knows what is true. Apparently there is no evidence of explosives though.

I hope not.

Another angle coming out now:

Car was seen travelling 100mph down “Main St” picture attached, swerved around a car and lost control into the USA side. You can see from this video the car does not come from the Canada Side.
