We had this case here where a dad reported his little 5 or 6 yr old girl missing, co-incidentally just after a social worker noticed the family seemed to have misplaced a kid. He had some story about her running away recently when she couldn't have a cookie. Only problem was, when police talked to the other kids in the house, they hadn't seen the missing kid for probably over a year. Their parents had told them, she moved out of state to live with her bio mom. That was news to bio mom who'd been in and out of homeless shelters during that period of time, where neither she, nor any one else around her had ever seen the little girl. She alleged that every time she'd called to talk to her daughter, there was some excuse why she couldn't. (Sound familiar?) And once CPS took the other children out of the house and out of the parents custody, the children recounted some pretty horrific abuse. One child reported that he probably heard what may have been the little girl's final screams. At the same time, the stepmom was telling one or two people that the little girl had died after some pretty serious abuse and neglect and that she and the dad burried her in a field "as she was taking her last breath." Although the police knew all of this, NONE OF THIS WAS KNOWN TO THE PUBLIC until the father was finally arrested and getting ready to go to trial two or three years later. (The stepmom died of a heart atack in the meantime.) The child's body was never found.
The point of this is to say that sometimes these things take time. These people were out of jail for years and the public went nuts thinking someone was literally getting away with murder. Publically, the parents plead their innocense, and spokesmen, local and coming in from out of state, sprung up to the parents' defense. It was maddening that apparently people could misplace a child and never have to answer for it.
Yet, again, the police knew things the public didn't know and when they were ready, they arrested the father, prepared to try him, and he will probably now take a plea bargain for 50 something years in jail.
Why did police wait? I think they REALLY care about this type of case and I think they hold out hoping to find a body if they can't find a living child. They hope the parent will crack and lead them to the child if given enough time. MO, that's probably what's going on in Caylee's case. Orlando LE probably knows a lot more than we do, but they want to make sure they have all their ducks in a row before they make final charges. More than that, they probably hope time will be on their side when it comes to finding the baby.
