Details of Disappearance
Greub was last seen in the Cloud Peak Wilderness in the Bighorn Mountains in Johnson County, Wyoming on August 10, 1976. She was hiking with two female friends and decided to rest near the trailhead while the others climbed Cloud Peak without her. When they returned at 5:00 p.m., she was gone. She wasn't carrying any supplies when she disappeared, only candy.

Because Greub was having marital problems at the time of her disappearance, there was speculation that she left of her own accord. She lived in Casper, Wyoming at the time of her disappearance.

An extensive search, involving 200 to 300 people and covering about eighty square miles, turned up no indication of her whereabouts, and the search efforts were called off after two weeks. There has been no indication of Greub's whereabouts since 1976.

How sad. It can be so dangerous in the wilderness areas.

This is all I could do.
I think it's very unlikely she decided to run away in that place... Although, are we sure she disappeared there? If her friends helped her to vanish, they could have made up the whole trip story... But this is pure speculation.

Doe Network:
Celeste Hensley Grueb was last near the Cloud Peak Primitive Area of Big Horn Mountains on August 10, 1976.
Two of Celeste's backpacking companions left her alone while they climbed Cloud Peak. When they returned about 5 p.m., she was gone.
On August 11, hikers saw a woman who matched the description of Celeste walking normally towards an unnamed lake between Misty Moon Lake and Gunboat Lake near Florence Pass. The hikers were too far away from her to call out to her.
Her family refuted claims Celeste and her husband were having marital problems, and she was under emotional distress. Celeste had been very excited about the trip and had been involved in the planning stages for quite a while.

Despite extensive searchers by bloodhounds, helicopters, horses, and experienced trackers, no sign of Celeste was found in the rugged wilderness terrain, and by the end of August, searchers were called off.
