I still want to know who the real father was. I bet he is a Marine too.

Was he Hispanic too? Is he married? Is he a higher ranking Marine? Did he also have family in Mexico or perhaps El Paso,Texas?

Ugggh I hate it when so many questions go unanswered in a case.

IMO

You make a very good point, I would have liked to know more about the actual father of the baby, that was something the defence should have brought up as another way Maria could have ended up like this, did the father of the baby know Cesar??? There is another avenue the defence could have taken, but im glad that the defence seems to have done a piss poor job because justice does need to be done in this case for Maria and that poor innocent baby.

My speculation would be he is married and a Marine, possibly higher rank, and therefore why Maria never divulged his identity. I also would like to know if he had a connection to El Paso. I can't imagine why, if there was no contact between Cesar & Maria, why she would choose to follow through with something he'd suggested months earlier. Meeting at the PX or dry cleaners wouldn't be the contact I would think would set up such a plan either. MOO

Nice to see you posting here.

I am sure McNeil had filed motions to get this information, which I do believe would have been pertinent to the case, especially if this mystery father had family in El Paso but I am sure the Judge shut him down.

As far as I know Cesar had no family in El Paso. From what I remember his immediate family lives in Las Vegas.

I dont think either side did a very good job in their CIC. They were better in their closing arguments (both sides, imo).

Well, poop! I missed the coverage after lunch! I did really want to hear the jury instructions. I hope there will be a video of it I can watch.

I honestly do not think there will be a verdict today and maybe not even tomorrow. Of course I think Cesar is guilty, but I am not charged with legally deciding guilty or not guilty as the jury is. That is no light matter and I want the jury to take their time and look at all of the evidence. They owe Maria and Baby Gabriel no less than a fair deliberation.

AND as much as I detest Cesar Laurean, it is no small matter to effectively take away the rest of someone's life of freedom. It should not be a quick decision.

I think we all know more about this case because we heard much more than the jury will be allowed to take into consideration. If I were to seperate all I knew before the beginning of this trial and what was presented during this trial, I would convict. We differ in our opinions right here at WS, and I can imagine that the jurors might also.

As much as I want to know what the verdict will be RIGHT NOW, I want the jury to take it's time.

Verdict watch!!!

I think the prosecution's closing arguments were very good, they way they explained the evidence in a time line and what they thought took place, made it all seem logical to me, I dont know if it did anyone else. I believed them more then the defence, they didnt really convince me Cesar didnt do it.

I have my doubts about whether the woman at the PX or the dry cleaner guy really saw Maria and Cesar together.

I just don't see either one of them that bold with an MPO in place. They both could have gotten in serious trouble.

And oh my goodness there are many young Hispanic male Marines in Jacksonville and plenty of blonde pregnant Marines too. The first time I went there I thought it was the pregnancy capital of the world! LOL! And they all look so similar with the same kind of cammies on, with the guys with their high and tight haircuts, and the woman's hair short or pulled back in a bun.

Heck when we went up there when our son came back from one of his deployments overseas I couldn't even pick out my own son from the rest of the Marines there. LOL! He spotted us first.

Actually, I thought Pope AFB and Ft. Bragg was the pregnancy capitol of the world! It looked like it was when my great-granddaughter was born!

I certainly will agree with that ~ in uniform, it could have just been a couple who looked like them, however, if they were in cammies, their names would also be on their shirts. IIRC, the witnesses didn't say they remember the names, correct?

The ADA was certainly better than they had been in the CIC. He is much better than Dewey imo.

They speculated about some things though. They said Cesar lured her there however they absolutely have no evidence or proof of that nor was it entered as evidence in the case. Quite the contrary they could find no communication between Maria and Laurean going all the way back to the rape allegations.

That is why the Judge reminds the jury that what the attorneys say is not evidence. Evidence is what came from the witnesses on the stand.

I actually thought McNeil did very well and asked some very thought provoking questions that I am sure the jury is wondering about as well. A defense attorney is always at an disadvantage especially in cases like this that have such an emotional slant to them.

What the state did is use the emotional aspect of the case to make their case and I do think he will be convicted.

I am still not certain who did this crime and who covered it up for the other one but then I am not a juror on this case. I have more questions than ever before and the trial has come to an end.

No they didn't. It just seemed to have been a visual ID and we all know how eye witness testimony can be faulty.

Another question since I missed their entire testimony. Were either of those witnesses asked if they personally knew either Cesar and/or Maria or if their identification was based on photographs of Maria and Cesar's presence in court? I too believe they could be mistaken, as Ortega also could be when she believes she saw Maria at the party. MOO

IIRC (and I could be wrong) both came forward AFTER both Maria and Cesar's faces had been on the news. Not super reliable IMO. But I also happen to think that the witness who claimed to have seen Maria at the Christmas Party was wrong. Looks like no one else, out of a couple hundred people saw her.

LOL I would have thought Ft Bragg was too... until I came here. These people are some baby making machines... :)

This is totally off topic here... but did any of you folks that got to watch the testimony see if CL was writing, and if so, what hand he used to write with?

I also believe Ortega was mistaken, mostly due to the fact that Maria wouldn't have shown up at the party after leaving her desertion note at Durhams and she wasn't dressed for such from the ATM video of her earlier. Now, whether or not she dropped by looking for Cesar, I'm not sure. Too bad the witness wasn't asked what Maria was wearing. MOO

Sorry I didn't. Most of the testimony I was able to "watch" I had it opened in another window (listening) as I typed here!! :online:

LOL No worries :) I appreciate all the detailed updates! We just had an interesting discussion regarding the head injury at work, and the question came up...

This would have been a good question, except that her picture from the ATM was released... probably before this Marine was questioned about the party.

Such as trying to determine if a left or right handed person would've landed a blow on the left side of Maria's head? I also have been trying to figure out just what position Maria was in vis-a-vis her attacker when struck. :waitasec:
