Utah County asks Utah legislature for $2 million for defense & prosecution costs in Charlie Kirk murder case
On Monday, February 9, 2026, Utah County Administrator Ezra Nair presented a $2 million appropriation request to the Criminal Justice Appropriations Subcommittee on Utah's Capitol Hill regarding State of Utah v. Tyler Robinson.
Nair asked for a one-time funding source in 2026 for $2 million and "The nation would benefit from ensuring this case has adequate resources to be carried out properly due to its high profile nature."
The appropriation request reads, "Because this is a state crime, the County is tasked with paying for both the prosecution and the defense. This is a high profile capital case with national interest which adds unique complexities to it. This dollar amount only represents a portion of the total costs of the case, both prosecution and defense. Utah County residents will have to pay for any portion of this that is not funded by the state. The county is mobilizing all available resources to ensure the proper time, dedication, and resources."
Senator Owens replied to the presentation saying, "This one, I believe the state should, we can all pitch in and help you on this one together."Senator Brammer commented saying, "this is kind of an unprecedented event in the state of Utah, it's one of the national-level, worldwide-level issues that's happened."
Utah County Commissioner Skyler Beltran wrote on social media, "We take the fiscal health and responsibility of our county and its residents very seriously. This request is about protecting Utah County taxpayers while still ensuring justice is fully and properly carried out. This case is unique in its complexity and public interest but public attention can't outweigh the need to ensure fair and impartial justice for both the victim and the accused. This case will showcase Utah’s justice system and the extraordinary people who call our state home. It is being handled by our professional and experienced prosecution team on behalf of the State of Utah and our request simply recognizes that the impact and responsibility extends beyond county boundaries."
The presentation was brief and received two comments.
