Utah governor says authorities have 'a person of interest in custody'

The governor of Utah, Spencer Cox, just said at a news conference on the killing of Charlie Kirk that “we have a person of interest in custody, who is being interviewed right now.”

“I want to be very clear that this is a political assassination”, Cox also said, without revealing how he knew the motive of the shooter.

Cox appeared to contradict Beau Mason, the commissioner of the Utah Department of Public Safety, who said just minutes earlier, “the suspect is at large.”

Cox also said that the first person to be detained at the scene, George Zinn, was determined not to be the assassin, but has been charged with obstructing justice.

Although the FBI director, Kash Patel, posted earlier that a suspect was in custody, the FBI special agent in charge, Robert Bohls, did not confirm that at the news conference.

The US is a 'broken' nation, says Cox

"Our nation is broken," says an emotional Cox.

He raises other political assassinations and attempts in recent months, from the June shooting death of a Democratic Minnesota state lawmaker and her husband, as well as the wounding of another lawmaker and his wife, the attempted attack on Democratic Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, and the two attempted assassinations of Donald Trump during the presidential campaign last year.

Hope they got the right one this time, after dragging that poor old man through the crowd though his pants were falling down. He didn’t shoot Charlie and could have been very hurt.
I just listened to the press conference, and it seems this man was also arrested for obstruction. So not sure if there is any connection to the shooter and this guy or if the obstruction was for something not related to the shooting.

Still confused by the contradictory information, but my impression is that they do have a POI in custody, but when they say they are still investigating they are looking to see if there was anyone else involved. They did say “we will find you,” so I expect that means conspirators.

And the elderly man was problematic.

As I type this, Jake Tapper just asked this question and John Miller is responding.

It will get sorted, I’m sure.

JM speculation

It looks like everyone is just rushing to report things. Early facts are almost always refined later. We will know in a couple of hours what happened and poor Charlie will be just as dead.

I'm confused. The FBI Director announced that a subject was in custody.

But at the press conference just moments later, the Utah Department of Public Safety, UVU PD, and FBI said that a suspect is not in custody.

But at that same press conference, the governor said a POI was in custody.

MOO, but while I expect conflicting witness reports, I personally can't recall a case where LE has stated two directly contradictory things at the same time. IMO it probably would have been better to wait to hold the press conference until after they had more information.

They couldn't get uglier.

They couldn't get uglier.
1963, JFK, to 1968 MLK, RFK, 4 dead in Ohio 1970, into the 70's. I was on a fishing boat when I heard RMN was out. I can't imagine anything again like that decade. Except that it ended up mass revolt against the gov because of Vietnam, whereas now it's so different.
Condolences to Kirk's family. I'm ex pat most of the year, honestly I didn't know who he was.

IMO the gunman was ex military, or some pro. Appalling and disgusting as the video was, it screamed pro.

Suspect possibly shot from a roof - law enforcement

The shooting suspect wore all dark clothing and possibly shot from a roof, according to Beau Mason from the Utah Department of Public Safety.

He says authorities have CCTV footage of the suspect, but didn't provide a further description of what the person in the footage looks like.

The chief of police for the university said there were six officers working security for the event, and that there were about 3,000 people in attendance

About 3,000 people in attendance at event

We have one final bit of information to bring you from the news conference just now:

The police chief at Utah Valley University, Jeff Long, is asked about security on campus.

He says it was an open venue that was outside. There were six officers working the event and about 3,000 people attended event.

The event Kirk was speaking at was surrounded by buildings, he notes.

Long says officers train to prevent these things kinds of incidents, but "unfortunately they happen".

With that, this news conference has ended.

It's not so difficult to use drones for security surveillance, particularly with several roofs in the vicinity.

Weird. Maybe Kash should have called the tip line to let them know.
By the middle of the press conference, it was announced that a suspect was in custody. I applaud the Utah LE, Governor and state FBI leaders, etc. for doing a press conference so quickly for the public, even if the LE teams on the ground were dealing with immediate issues while the others were preparing for a public press conference. Within minutes they were all on the same page.

I'm wondering how anyone could have seen him under that tent, unless they had heat-seeking viewfinders.

I am also the polar opposite of Mr. Kirk and his ilk politically, but I AM NOT rejoicing in this on any level. He left behind a wife and two small children, and at 31, it's quite likely that he has parents who didn't deserve to outlive a child either. Also, imagine the terror the residents of Orem and nearby communities must have been feeling while the POI was still at large.

I loved Kirk, and am so sad to see him go, so young, at the hands of an assassin.
I loved him, too. It's a great loss for our country, and as Utah's Governor said during the press conference, "It's a dark day for our nation."

University police won't say if gun used to kill Charlie Kirk was recovered

At the recently concluded news conference on the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk, a reporter asked the chief of the Utah Vally University police force, Jeff Long, if the gun used in the killing had been recovered.

Long paused and then said: “Um, I, at this point I can’t disclose that.”

So I've read " from a bldg 200 yards away", then "100 yards away". C'mon, 100 yds is a football field, there are vids of the supposed gunman dressed in black, lying on the roof. They can't even decide how many football fields away the bldg is? I hope that guy they perp walked with his pants around his ankles sues for 5M$.

I guess the university didn't have drones that they could use for security. Maybe now they will invest in some.

That man was also arrested though for obstruction so it's very possible there is a reason he was in the condition he was in. The police can't control who is taking photos and what they are posting and saying about the photos. I don't believe LE ever said that man was a POI in this case, it seems other had the photo and assumed that. At the presser they did say this man was arrested, but not for the shooting.

I saw them walking him along with his pants around his ankles, while people shouted vile things at him. That's the way to light a fire of hate against a person. Dangerous. Imo.
