I'm surprised the shooter hasn't been caught. hopefully that happens soon.

my thoughts are with his wife and young children.
Wait, i thought he was caught ?

**ETA -- Found it... They had someone in custody initially, but now they are saying a suspect still remains at large.. wow

I would like to know why there was basically zero security at this event. Seems very strange to me.
He had his own security team, which is designed to stop the typical assassination attempts we see (gunman at close range). I am surprised there apparently wasn't more campus security there, but that's not going to stop a sniper at a distance.

No. Someone was briefly taken into custody (man in his 50's or 60s), but he was not the shooter. He's sine been released.

Charlie had his security team with him. I'd like to know what kind of security the university had in place for this event since they approved it being held on their campus.

CNN saying that not only has the gunman not been located, but they haven't recovered the gun either.

Shot was fired from academic building, say multiple sources

The shot that killed Charlie Kirk appears to have been fired from an "elevated position in an academic building", around 100-200 yards away, multiple sources tell the BBC's US partner, CBS.

It is not clear whether the shot was fired from a rooftop or open window.

Of course the blame is entirely on the assassin, but I agree that this is very strange.

Here (NYC) even when we go to the Mets minor league team games, our tickets are scanned and our bags are searched.

Two weeks ago I went to see The Who at Madison Square Garden, and we had to pass through the metal detectors, etc.

And these are non-controversial events.

I’m astounded that if Charlie Kirk was a political lightning rod, there were no security measures in place. Or at least not being rigorously followed.

It’s true that this seems to resemble the near-assassination of Trump, also from a guy on a roof, so perhaps ultimately metal detectors, bag checks and ticket scanning may not have saved Charlie Kirk, but I’m still astonished.

Again, though, the blame is entirely on the murderer.

Whatever Charlie Kirk’s political stance, a wife is now a widow, and two little children are fatherless.

Political violence is a fact of American life and it's reprehensible. The fact that this is a controversial opinion doesn't bode well.

Turning Point USA asks for privacy for Kirk's family

Kirk's organisation, Turning Point USA, has released a statement confirming the activist's death.

"It is with a heavy heart that we confirm that Charles James Kirk has been murdered by a gunshot," the statement reads.

The statement offered condolences and prayers for Kirk's family and loved ones, asking the public to respect their privacy.

BREAKING

Shot was fired from roof of campus building, source says

We earlier reported that the shot seems to have been fired from an "elevated position" in an academic building - either from a rooftop or open window.

A source now tells our US partner, CBS, that the attacker appears to have fired from the roof of the school's Losee Center.

That campus has to be littered with cameras. I’d be surprised if they weren’t hot on his heals.
Emphasis mine.
Yep. ^^^^
I was just coming to post similar.
Praying the perp is caught today !!!!!!!

<modsnip: quoted post was removed> Yeah. I hope they find the shooter soon. Every minute they don't is to the shooter's advantage. One hopes there are security cameras that picked up clues.

The kind of security you are describing would be highly unusual for an event on a university campus, unless it was a presidential event. On the other hand, if a university felt that there was a security risk for an event on campus, they could either deny the event or they can make sure they provide extra security to protect their students and others who attend the event. Then they would charge the speaker or whoever hosts the event for the costs of the security and the speaker/event hosts are always glad to pay these charges. It seems lax to me that the university ignored the security with so many students and the public in attendance. Also, if they had offered an indoor space to hold the event, that would have been a more secure site. There are lots of things that investigators will be wanting to review.

At the time of the shooting, a question was being asked of Kirk about mass shootings, and gunfire was heard and attendees immediately scrambled for cover.

“We do know there was a shot fired from the top of the Losee Center,” UVU said in a statement. “Someone appeared to be at the top of that building or somewhere inside. We don’t know if they’ve been apprehended.”

A suspect was taken into custody, university officials said, while officers on the scene could not confirm if a suspect had been arrested or other details about the alleged shooter.

An Orem firefighter told a Salt Lake Tribune reporter that officials were not sure the actual shooter had been detained. Orem Fire Department officials said they could not immediately comment.

Investigators don’t have a suspect identified in the shooting death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk and have launched a manhunt..
Law enforcement officers can be seen in video footage combing buildings, including rooftops, at the perimeter of the open-air venue...
..an apparent effort to collect evidence including possible shell casings.

Since they've already stated the location of the shooter, and have a photo of the individual on the roof....they are combing other rooftops and buildings?
Maybe the shooter moved around?
