Unbelievable story. A child on the Disney Dream fell overboard today while the ship was sailing to Fort Lauderdale. Her dad jumped in to save her, and both were rescued by crew members.

Disney Cruise Line statement:

"The crew aboard the Disney Dream swiftly rescued two guests from the water. We commend our crew members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes. We are committed to the safety and well-being of our guests, and this incident highlights the effectiveness of our safety protocols," a Disney Cruise Line spokesperson shared.

Despite assumptions that the ship may have been docked, passengers confirmed the rescue took place while the Disney Dream was cruising between The Bahamas and Florida, with the child reportedly falling from Deck 4, which features a walking track. It remains unclear how the child fell overboard, despite the ship’s plexiglass safety barriers.

Maybe they will show pictures. That is amazing that the Dad jumped in after the child.

Witnesses stated that the dad had sat the girl on the rail so he could take a picture.

Apparently the dad sat her on the railing so he could take a picture.

Seriously? Those "rails" are almost chest high, if not higher. Why on earth would anyone put a child up on one of those rails?! Eye roll! They deliberately try to make those ships safe. Yet, there are always those around us....

"Do not put your child on the highest rail and take a picture".

"Do not ingest Tide Pods".

On and on...the stupidity of people is quite mind boggling.

It was a grown up. I think they were trying to take a picture on the railing. They were trying to see," Noeayala32 said in

From the article:

"Oh my God, that's a dad that needs to have a hero. He's a hero. He jumped in to save his child. He's a hero, he's a hero, that man is a hero," said passenger Tracy Robinson-Hughes, from Charleston, South Carolina, as she took a video of the rescue.".

So, the father is a "hero" because he saved a child he should have never put in peril?! Seriously.

Right! The first interviews I saw from the passengers who saw it happen said the reason he was able to jump in so quickly after she fell is that he was the one who sat her on the railing to take a picture.

Everyone is calling him a hero and blaming the cruise line. I think he should be banned from cruising.

A man and a child were rescued from the water after they went overboard a Disney Cruise Line ship Sunday afternoon.

The child sat on the rail of the Disney Dream cruise ship while the man was taking a picture, according to passenger Gar Frantz, who said the man was the child's father.

Everyone continues to praise the dad as a hero, ignoring the fact that she was sitting on the rail so he could take a picture? It is upsetting that people are criticizing the cruise line for being unsafe.

It’s not exactly clear how the child fell, however one witness recounted the “horrific” scene to NBC News, saying the child fell from a railing.

“She was sitting on the rail, and he wanted to take a picture, and she fell off,” Gar Frantz told the outlet.

That's exactly what I thought happened. There is no way possible that the girl "fell" off the ship". There had to be a violation of rules for her to go over the side. The height of the railings makes it impossible unless you are sitting on the rail (not allowed), climbing up on the railing. I've been on several cruises and there is no way someone can just fall off the ship.

Yes, I don't see the dad as a hero. He was responsible for the safety of the girl and letting her sit on the railing is absolutely prohibited. I would love to secretly hear what the mother said to him.
The ship is not responsible for "stupid" people.

That stupid father knew if he did not save that girl, he might as well just drown too because her mother would kill him.

This man should be banned from all cruise ships. I would not be surprised if he doesn't sue the cruise line. He shouldn't even be allowed to get into a canoe.

^Thankfully, there appear to be several witnesses to the entire incident - including watching the father place the child on the railing for a photo op - and there is likely surveillance video from the ship. This should negate any attempt by the family to successfully sue the cruise line. I haven't been on a Disney cruise, but I feel certain that there are warnings about not sitting or standing on handrails like there are for every other cruise line. This is clearly stated in the passenger contract agreed to by cruise passengers prior to the voyage. The father made a stupid choice: He is not a "hero".

It's a possibility that this situation will be investigated by police and he could be charged with child endangerment, JMO
