''In what Chinese authorities are calling an intentional act, the attack took place just before 8 p.m. local time Monday when the person drove" "a small SUV" into a large group of people outside a sports stadium in the mainland city of Zhuhai, Reuters reported.

The city is in the country's Guangdong province, on the border with Macau. The hit-and-run took place at the Zhuhai Sports Center, police said in a statement Tuesday.''

''Police say a man crashed his car into a stadium in Zhuhai on Monday where he ran down groups of people exercising on the sports track.

The "serious and vicious attack" also injured 45 people - among them elderly and children, local media report.

Police say the 62-year-old driver, identified as a Mr Fan, appeared to have acted out of unhappiness over a divorce settlement.''

He was arrested as he tried to flee the Zhuhai Sports Center and is in a coma due to self-inflicted wounds, police said in a statement.

The incident has sparked a national outcry in China, where President Xi Jinping vowed "severe punishment" for the perpetrator, and called for "all-out efforts" to treat the injured.''

''The attack took place the night before China's biggest airshow just 24 miles from the venue, which will feature the country's latest warplanes and attack drones.
Top Russian official Sergei Shoigu is expected to attend Airshow China, which started on Tuesday.''
"Internet censors working around the premier aviation event appeared to be scrubbing references to the previous night's major incident, according to Newsweek's review of key word searches on Chinese social media websites and apps including Weibo and WeChat.''

''Online videos of the aftermath of the attack showed people lying on jogging tracks and nearby grounds, many in sports clothes.
Chinese media outlet Caixin reported several of the injured were middle-aged and elderly, but the wounded also included teenagers and children.''

''In China it is common for censors to quickly take down social media videos which are linked to high-profile incidences of crime.

BBC journalists reporting from the stadium at Zhuhai on Tuesday were also harassed and told to stop filming.

China has seen a spate of violent attacks on members of the public in recent months that have been reported in local media to varying degrees.''

Thirty-five people were killed after a man drove a vehicle into a crowd at a sports center in the southern city of Zhuhai, the Chinese police said on Tuesday, in a rare case of deadly violence in a country where police surveillance is ubiquitous.

Another 43 people were injured in the crash on Monday evening, the Zhuhai Municipal Public Security Bureau said. The authorities did not explain why the death toll, one of the country’s highest from a single incident in recent years, was released a day later.
