PARIS (AP) — A French judicial official says the president of Interpol has been reported missing after traveling to China.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity for an ongoing investigation, said Meng Hongwei's wife reported him missing on Friday.

The official said the Interpol chief left France, where the international police organization is based, and arrived in China at the end of September. She said there had been no news of him since.

The 64-year-old Meng Hongwei was elected president of Interpol in November 2016. His term is due to run until 2020.

A vice minister of public security in China, he previously served as vice chairman of the national narcotics control commission and director of the National Counter-Terrorism Office for China.

Anyone else feel uneasy about the head of the global police liaison body being a senior member of the Chinese Communist Party?

Truly the fox is in charge of the henhouse.

From what I've read, it sounds like the current 'President', recently made leader for life, is using a current corruption crackdown as a cover for political housecleaning to consolidate power. It's likely that Meng 'knew too much', and was not cooperating with Bejing enough on rounding up dissidents abroad for China. He may resurface in later China to face some trumped up charges.

Your link appears to go to a non-msm political website ran by a Russian spy based in Hong Kong?
I can't find any reliable sources saying he's been found.

This is what the article they quoted actually says (snipped)
Meng Hongwei... was “taken away” for questioning by discipline authorities “as soon as he landed in China” last week, according to the source.
It is not yet clear why Meng is being investigated or exactly where he is being held.

This is the latest (1hr ago) update from msm:

Al Jazeera's Adrian Brow, reporting from Beijing, said China's silence is a "reflection of how sensitive this case is".
"So far China has said absolutely nothing about the disappearance of Meng Hongwei. State-controlled media is so far not reporting this story either and any mention of his name on social media is being deleted," he said

SCMP is a Hong Kong based English language newspaper. Since being bought by Alibaba in 2016, it can be considered to be Chinese controlled. It will not report anything contrary to the Chinese stance, that is how I understand it. (Much like the Chinese language media in Australia is controlled by Chinese interests as well.)

Grace Meng, wife of missing former Interpol chief Meng Hongwei, applied for asylum in France fearing for her life, her lawyer said on Friday. The boss of Lyon-based Interpol went missing in September after traveling back to his native China. France opened an inquiry and China said he was under investigation for bribery.

Meng Hongwei: China sentences ex-Interpol chief to 13 years in jail

A former Interpol chief accused of bribery was sentenced to 13-and-a-half years in jail by a Chinese court on Tuesday.
Meng Hongwei, who was the first Chinese head of Interpol, vanished on a trip back to the country from France in September 2018.
China later confirmed he had been detained as part of President Xi Jinping's drive against corruption.
Meng has admitted to taking more than $2m (£1.6m) in bribes.

The 56-year-old was also ordered by the Tianjin No 1 Intermediate People's Court to pay a fine of two million yuan ($289,540; £222,711).
The court statement said Meng would not appeal against the verdict.
