IMO he started out slow and then came to a few dead stops...faltering at the very end. That little stunt with the fake crying was pathetic.

I think Maline is an alright guy actually. I think we just saw his incredible inner conflict, between doing his job while really believing he's been defending Satan in the flesh. I think his conscience was finally catching up with him. Notice how weak his last few words were in his closing? He looks up at the photo of the family smiling, and suddenly it's as though he really does not want to be there defending Merritt anymore. That's my take on it, anyway.
