[A high school student accused of unleashing terror inside the STEM School Highlands Ranch in May will appear in Douglas County court Monday for the start of what could be a full week of testimony regarding the teen’s role in the shooting, which left one student dead and eight injured.

Alec McKinney, 16, faces 48 charges in connection to the shooting, including first-degree murder. In addition to a preliminary hearing, which determines whether there is enough evidence to send the case to trial, attorneys also will argue over whether McKinney should be tried as an adult.]

STEM School shooting trial: 600 potential jurors to be called

The 18th Judicial District will call 600 people to potentially serve as jurors in the upcoming trial for the adult suspect in the 2019 STEM School Highlands Ranch shooting.

The murder trial for Devon Erickson is scheduled to start May 24.

Those called for jury duty will be asked to start reporting on May 20, and jury selection will be held in a ballroom at a Marriott hotel because of COVID-19 protocols. Jury selection is expected to last a week. Proceedings will move back to the Douglas County courthouse once the jury is selected, Slade said.

A motions hearing will be held at 1:30 p.m. May 21. The trial’s proceedings can be watched online because of limited capacity inside courtrooms.

School shootings are becoming so normalized now in the United States, people hardly pay attention to them. Just "another" School shooting, mass shooting...every day occurrence.

School shootings are becoming so normalized now in the United States, people hardly pay attention to them. Just "another" School shooting, mass shooting...every day occurrence.

That makes me sad. There’s lots that can be learned from how incident like this transpire IMO. Plus, the trial has been pretty interesting. I welcome the chance to discuss pros/cons of legal positions actually being taken than speculating on what will be done in trials that haven’t started yet. But that’s just me.
