Hey @Seattle1
We’ve seen and discussed other cases here on WS (Murdaugh, Stauch, Richens)regarding Defendant’s choices/requests regarding their being seen in Court in street clothes, cuffed and shackled etc.

Here’s a new one for me :

There were no cameras, audio or photos allowed to be taken in the courtroom Wednesday. At the start of the hearing the defense requested the dentist have extra length on his handcuffs so he could also take notes himself.

Thanks, @Cindizzi. Perhaps Colorado Courts are getting back to its strict courtroom decorum rules before Covid, and not allowing the Supreme Court emergency order to enact virtual hearings (WebEx) during the pandemic, to influence the Court about defendants in custody being allowed to dress out for court appearances prior to trial. Or at least Judge Shay K Whitaker wasn't influenced but found it reasonable to accommodate Craig in order for him to take notes during the proceedings today. JMO

Colorado dentist and father-of-six James Toliver Craig leaned back in his chair and twiddled his thumbs through his handcuffs on Wednesday, his beard unkempt above his orange prison jumpsuit, as court took a brief recess from a preliminary hearing on the first-degree murder charge he faces for allegedly poisoning his wife.

[..]

Mr Craig, 45, was arrested one day after Angela, 43, was pronounced dead on 18 March following her third hospitalisation in a month for a host of concerning and worsening symptoms. Prosecutors on Wednesday revealed Mr Craig was also now facing a second charge without specifying what it was.

But testimony from the Arapahoe County Coroner and lead detective – as reporters, several of Angela’s siblings and the couple’s oldest son sat in the courtroom – included a number of explosive claims.

According to evidence given by Arapahoe County Coroner Dr Kelly Lear, samples showed that Angela had an arsenic level of 68 around 11.50am on 15 March – but that level had increased to 330 just after 8.20pm.

That would be “consistent with her receiving additional cyanide exposure in that time period,” Dr Lear said.

[..]

The cause of death she listed in her report was acute “cyanide and tetrahydrozoline poisoning; the manner of death is homicide,” she testified Wednesday. Tetrahydrozoline is the decongestant used in Visine eye drops – and, according to the prosecution, in the weeks before his wife’s death, Mr Craig had accessed an article about how a woman in another state had been poisoned after consuming something containing five bottles of eyedrops.

[..]

On 6 March, the prosecutor told the court, Mr Craig conducted a google search for “how the chemical in eyedrops attacks your body if swallowed and can potentially kill you.

“These are the actions of a man who is determined to kill his wife,” he argued.

That date, 6 March, marked the first time Angela presented at Parker Adventist Hospital. Det. Olson testified that she had reviewed weeks of internal and external home surveillance footage from the Craig residence, and, on 6 March, Mr Craig can be seen making what appears to be a protein shake then sipped by his wife.

[..]

Mr Craig’s pay was $39,000 in January and less than $16,000 the following month, she said. The dentist had taken out four life insurance policies on his wife from two companies totaling nearly $4.5million, the court heard.

[..]

Following Wednesday’s preliminary hearing, Judge Shay K Whitaker ruled that the prosecution had met the burden for probable cause and set the next court date for 29 August.

They had surveillance cameras inside the home? Did he forget that?!

This story is dated 2013 regarding Visine poisoning in Wyoming by 19 yr old. Guess this has been happening for years -- including a prank as seen in the movie Wedding Crashers.

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) — Shortly after beginning an affair, a Colorado dentist accused of killing his wife searched online for answers to questions such as “is arsenic detectable in an autopsy?” and “how to make murder look like a heart attack," police said. Days later, James Craig's wife, Angela Craig, turned to Google to try to figure out why she was experiencing symptoms like vertigo, shaking and cold lips, and she searched for doctors who could help her, District Attorney John Kellner said Wednesday in a court hearing on the evidence in the case.

“This is a person who is tragically being slowly poisoned by her husband,” he said.

While Craig's lawyers argued there was no direct evidence that he put poison in his wife's protein shakes, as police allege, and accused the lead detective of being biased against him, Judge Shay Whitaker ruled at the end of the hearing that there was enough evidence for the case to proceed toward a trial. She noted that Craig is alleged to have bought poisons online just before Angela Craig experienced her mysterious symptoms.

Toxicology tests showed that Angela Craig died because she had been poisoned with cyanide and tetrahydrozoline, a substance found in over-the-counter eye drops, Arapahoe County coroner Kelly Lear testified during the hearing.

An Aurora dentist accused of plotting to kill his wife was formally charged with first degree murder Thursday morning.

James Craig, 45, told office workers that his wife first began showing concerning symptoms of dizziness after he made her a protein shake, which Aurora police investigators suspect was laced with deadly poison, according to the arrest affidavit.

Craig said six words in court in response to the judge’s questions about whether or not he understood the advisement of charges – five yeses and one no.

Angela Craig was the kind of person who brightened the rooms she walked into. Vibrant and quick-witted, she found ways to cheer up her pals and make hard times easier. When her friend Jennifer Davis was in the hospital in July 2022, Angela stopped by to cheer her up.

“She brought me some crayons and markers and some coloring books and this teeny bopper book,” remembers Davis. “She was always there for you. She was a beacon of light when you were having a dark day."

It’s a memory Davis says she’ll “treasure," because it's one of the last times she saw her friend.

6/28/23 Update: A judge set a $10 million cash-only bond on Wednesday morning for Craig. Judge Shay Whitaker explained the conditions for setting bond, such as the chance a defendant will flee & if there is a risk to the community. She said the court had "significant concerns" with the facts of this case. She also recognized that James Craig may commit an additional violation. Ultimately, she set his bond for $10 million cash-only & ordered him to surrender his passport & participate in daily check-ins. She also ordered him to wear a GPS tracker. Judge Whitaker also ruled to keep some documents suppressed until the preliminary hearing on July 12. The defense added that they hoped the court would be open to a reduction of bond after the preliminary hearing, which is scheduled for 7/12/23.
7/12/23 Update: State witnesses: Coroner Dr. Kelly Lear, Forensic Pathologist for the Arapahoe County Coroner's office & performed autopsy testified Angela had levels of cyanide between 4.77 and "5-something" Level of 2.5 is lethal. Tetrahydrozoline & arsenic combo likely in Angela's death. Detective Bobbi Olson with Aurora PD. Judge Shay K. Whitaker rules prosecution has enough probable cause to take Craig to trial on 2 counts: 1st degree murder after deliberation & tampering with physical evidence. The arraignment hearing on 8/29/23 @ 3pm. See post #382 article for more info page 20 thread #1.

DENVER (AP) — A Colorado dentist accused of killing his wife by lacing her protein shakes with poison is set to enter a plea in court to a first-degree murder charge on Tuesday.

Police said James Craig, who began an affair before his wife’s March 18 death, had searched online for answers to questions such as “is arsenic detectable in an autopsy?” and “how to make murder look like a heart attack.” In the following days, Craig’s wife, Angela Craig, then Googled symptoms she was having including vertigo, shaking and cold lips, said District Attorney John Kellner at a July preliminary hearing.

Angela Craig, a mother of six who was married to her husband for 23 years, died of poisoning from cyanide and tetrahydrozoline, the latter a substance found in over-the-counter eye drops, according to the Arapahoe County coroner Kelly Lear. .

At the preliminary hearing, James Craig’s attorneys argued there was no direct evidence that Craig had slipped poison into his wife’s shakes and accused the lead detective of bias against Craig. Neither the affidavit nor testimony during the hearing addressed how investigators believe Angela Craig was poisoned with tetrahydrozoline.

Craig also was later charged with tampering with evidence but details about that allegation have not been disclosed.
