“In criminal defense work, there are certain facts that are beyond dispute. You need to make peace with those facts and argue the facts that are in dispute and those facts which you cannot grant or admit. So there are certain realities and factual findings that that are either going to be admitted and embraced or pushed back on,” said Christopher Decker, criminal defense attorney and legal analyst. “How are they going to explain the communications? How is he going to explain ordering the cyanide? How is he going to explain a jailhouse snitch saying that he was hired to hurt the detective. These are questions everyone's waiting to hear, and we'll see how successful the defense team is in presenting answers to those questions.”

Live Updates - TRIAL DAY -1

Prosecution: James 'intentionally' poisoned his wife

Madeline Rhodes
Prosecution claims her husband, James, who is on trial, “intentionally” poisoned her over time. Prosecution claims that James made Angela’s smoothies, the protein shakes believed to have killed her. They said that James allegedly ordered several items, including cyanide, online.

Prosecution speculates affair as a motive

Madeline Rhodes
Prosecution said that “motive is not an element” to prove someone’s guilt, but the prosecution said there were several motives.

Prosecution said there were money problems, where his dental practice “was in trouble.” The prosecution also said James had “a lot of affairs” and got caught in 2022, when the couple allegedly talked about divorce but decided to stay together.

The prosecution said there would be a timeline and evidence, including text messages, presented in the trial of a deep relationship with another woman prior to Angela’s death.

'She was a mother': Opening statements being

Madeline Rhodes
The prosecution started describing the victim, Angela Craig, who was one of 10 siblings and a mother of six. Prosecution said she went to the hospital “critically ill” and went to the hospital several times over 10 days. Prosecution said during the trial, jurors will see how she was getting sicker over several days.

The trial begins

Madeline Rhodes
Jurors are currently being briefed on the rules of the court ahead of opening statements.

Opening statements conclude

Madeline Rhodes
Opening statements are done. There is a recess until 11 a.m.

Defense is asking jury to presume his innocence

Madeline Rhodes
Defense is asking the jury to presume his innocence throughout the trial.

“You may not like him, you may not think he’s a good husband, but that’s not what you’re here to decide,” said the defense.

Defense said it was a 'broken investigation'

Madeline Rhodes
Defense claims there was “tunnel vision” on James because there was a package of cyanide delivered to his office. Defense said that in Angela’s journal, which the family turned over to police, she describes that she was isolated.

Defense said Angela’s laptop was never searched, and the search of the home was “very poorly done.”

'The marriage was broken': Defense said money, affairs aren't motives

Madeline Rhodes
The defense said, like all marriages, there were problems, but it was a caring relationship. While it was caring, it was a “broken” marriage.

Prosecution specifically brought up one affair, but the defense said this woman was no different than several other affairs he had. Defense said James had several affairs, and Angela knew he was cheating.

Defense said there were also money issues, but they’re not to the extent of the prosecution’s claims. The couple filed for bankruptcy in 2021, but the defense said Angela knew and contributed to their financial situation.

Defense doesn't dispute Angela was poisoned

Madeline Rhodes
The defense said there are several points that the prosecution made that won’t be disputed. Defense believes that Angela was sick, she was in and out of the hospital and she did have position in her system, but the crux of the case is “how.”

The defense said the prosecution’s “how” is based on speculation and assumption.

Angela Craig, 43, who had six children with James Craig, was hospitalized several times. After the first time, she can be seen on home surveillance video accusing her husband of implying to medical staff that she was suicidal.

“It’s your fault they treated me like I was a suicide risk, like I did it to myself, and like nothing I said could be believed,” she said to her husband on the video.

XLVII. James Craig Trial — DR. PICO TESTIMONY SUMMARYDr. Pico testified Angela Craig visited ER on 3/6 & 3/9/23, reporting dizziness, later fainting, low BP. Tests normal, no toxin screens. James, present, seemed caring but silent on poisons. Prosecution suggests concealment; defense highlights support.
