"A dozen or so horseback riders gathered at the Boulder County Fairgrounds to compete in a sport Ashley loved so much.

“Ashley would want [her friends] to move forward and continue on,” said Ashley’s mom Mary Ann. “And that when they ride their horses just think of Ashley, ride for Ashley.”

All the proceeds from the competition went to benefit the Ashley Doolittle Little Princesses Foundation, which will help raise awareness about domestic violence.

As for friends and family they knew the competition wasn’t to win, it was just to pay respect to a fellow rider and friend.

“Give your kids a hug and tell them how much you're proud of them and how much you love them every day,” Mary Ann said."

"In honor of her passion, friends and family held a fundraiser at the Boulder County Fairgrounds to benefit two charities. One charity supports the fight against domestic violence, the other helps young girls join the 4H's royalty program, encouraging children to train in horse showing. Fitting the fundraiser was a horse show.

"It's been amazing, the outpouring of support," said Ann Marie Doolittle, Ashley's mother.*"She loved horses, she loved showing and she loved the people."

Ann Marie announced part of the horse show. "I felt Ashley, here today," she said.

Ashley will be remembered throughout all of the rodeo events in Boulder County in 2017. She was the "Lady in Waiting" and was scheduled to be crowned the 2017 Queen on July 31.

"We are actually still crowning her the 2017 Queen. She will always be the 2017 Queen," said Mikaela Kugel, this year's queen.

Kugel reflected on Doolittle's smile and happy personality. She said Doolittle's story is already helping others escape domestic violence.

"Ashley would want it that way," Kugel said. "Ashley would want to save a life if it were possible and I know her story has helped a lot of people. I've had a lot of people come out and tell me, hearing Ashley's story has helped me get out of an abusive relationship."

In Doolittle's honor, a riderless horse will be at rodeo events in 2017."

Ashley Doolittle to be posthumously crowned Boulder County Fair*queen
http://kdvr.com/2016/07/26/ashley-doolittle-to-be-posthumously-crowned-boulder-county-fair-queen/

"LONGMONT, Colo. — Ashley Doolittle, the Berthoud teenager who was killed last month, will be posthumously crowned queen at the Boulder County Fair, the Longmont Times-Call reports.

Doolittle was selected as lady-in-waiting last year and would have been crowned queen at this year’s fair. The newspaper reported Doolittle will have the title of queen for a year and the queen sash will be placed on her horse during a ceremony at the fair, which begins Friday.

“We’ve been in contact with her mother,” Boulder County Fair board president and royalty coordinator Julia Davis told the newspaper. “The committee talked to royalty programs around the state and decided that we will not crown a queen this year. We’re not taking it away from Ashley — that’s her honor.

“We’ll crown a lady-in-waiting and two princesses. The princess program was Ashley’s idea, and this will be the first year of doing it, so it’ll be called the Ashley Doolittle Princess Program.”"

Murdered teen posthumously crowned fair queen

"BOULDER COUNTY - In an emotional ceremony, the Boulder County Fair posthumously crowned a Ashley Doolittle as the new queen Sunday night."

Snip

"Doolittle's rider-less horse was led into the arena with her hat on the saddle. Her brother helped put the sash and ceremonial chaps over the horse.

The Fair's Royalty Committee decided since Doolittle earned her title, she will keep it for the entire year.

It something that Doolittle's mother said is helping the family get through the loss.

"I was amazed. I was in shock. I couldn't believe it. It's been wonderful. It helps with the healing process too," Ann Marie Doolittle said."

I am just so deeply moved by how the community and officials are handling this and in the process also helping the family's healing process. It is hard enough to heal from something like this. So many times we see things being made harder for the victims (if they survive) and their families. I'm so thankful for how this is all being handled and the support Ashley's family feels from it. They deserve it.

I saw that the current Rodeo Queen would carry out another year and attend to all the duties for her. I wondered what they'd do and am happy this was the answer. The fair started this weekend and the royalty ball was the other night I believe. I am sure it was a somber one :(

I'm so sorry, Miss Ashley. You were a role model I needed for my daughters. My 11 yr old went to horse camp this summer & other campers (from KS, CO, TX) had mentioned your name. I did not tell her what I knew, but Google couldn't hide the info. I'm sooooooo heart broken over this absolute nonsense that occurred. You are missed by this mama that didn't even have the privilege of knowing you personally. Your family is in my daily prayers. [emoji22]

Preliminary hearing scheduled for teen accused of killing girlfriend - November 17th

http://kdvr.com/2016/11/17/preliminary-hearing-scheduled-for-teen-accused-of-killing-girlfriend/

Tanner Flores’ family and friends packed the courtroom as the 19-year-old man accused of shooting and killing 18-year-old Ashley Doolittle appeared in court Thursday.

A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Jan. 12.

Flores is facing two counts of first-degree murder and one count of second-degree kidnapping. All three charges carry a domestic violence sentence enhancer and the second-degree kidnapping charge carries a crime of violence sentence enhancer.

Video-taped interview shows Tanner Flores describing how he killed 18-year-old rodeo queen Ashley Doolittle
Ashley Doolittle’s friends and relatives wearing pins with her pictured in a rodeo outfit filled a Larimer County courtroom Thursday to hear a graphic description of how her former boyfriend shot and killed her.

(...)

The videotaped interview shows Flores, 19, first telling Norris that Doolittle grabbed the revolver from his back seat and pointed it at herself. He told the investigator that the gun fired when he tried to wrestle it from her and then he shot her again 5 to 10 seconds later to end her pain. Within minutes during the interview, however, Flores changed his story after Norris challenged it by saying he doubted someone familiar with weapons would handle a gun that way.

Flores eventually admitted that after Doolittle glared at him and looked out the passenger window, he grabbed the gun and shot her twice in the back of the head. When she didn’t die instantly, he shot her again.

Tanner Flores pleads not guilty to killing Ashley Doolittle

http://www.reporterherald.com/news/loveland-local-news/ci_30815856/tanner-flores-pleads-not-guilty-killing-ashley-doolittle

A Berthoud teen pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and second-degree kidnapping charges Thursday afternoon in a case alleging he shot Larimer County teen Ashley Doolittle to death in June.

Flores' attorney, Daniel Jasinski, filed a motion for an evaluation of his client's mental health before the case proceeds any further.

District Attorney Cliff Riedel did not object to the evaluation, which state law dictates take place at state mental health facility in Pueblo.

In setting a date for Flores' next appearance, Lammons noted he did not know how long it would take the Pueblo mental health hospital to complete the evaluation of the Flores.

"We don't have control over the state hospital and they are always booked full," Lammons said.

The judge set a status conference for Flores' case for April 10, at which point Lammons hopes to schedule a jury trial.

‘I Feel Ashley Here’: Parents Of Murdered Teen Hope To Help Others

http://denver.cbslocal.com/2017/05/04/ashley-doolittle-domestic-violence/

It’s been nearly one year since Ashley Doolittle was killed. Police believe the teenager’s ex-boyfriend is responsible for her murder.

“I feel Ashley here. You know, my life were my kids. Ashley and I did everything together with showing her horses and…” said Ashley’s mother Ann Marie. “A lot I don’t remember, especially around the funeral and after the funeral, that was kind of a fog.”

“That was really hard,” said Ashley’s father Jeff.

In an effort to move forward, the Doolittles have done something remarkable with their pain. They created a foundation in Ashley’s name, dedicated to stopping domestic violence.

“I just feel her here and wanting to make a difference and you know Ashley, she wanted to help others and we hope through this foundation we can and we hope too, we can carry her legacy on through the love of our Western heritage,” said Ann Marie.

The foundation is focused on helping teenagers and their parents to prevent teen dating violence, one the Doolittles say they won’t stop fighting to accomplish.

“If it can prevent just one last situation like we had with Ashley from happening, that’s a win. That’s a beautiful thing,” said Jeff.

just read this thread again (staying away from politivent forums - yikes, can't risk a TO) and I am in tears all over again. So senseless and sad. "Justice" seems like just a word but may it bring closure to this family as they continue to celebrate Ashley's life.

One year later: Slain teen's parents speak about their loss

http://www.coloradoan.com/story/news/crime/2017/06/09/one-year-later-slain-teens-parents-speak-their-loss/379155001/

In the year since Ashley's death, family members have grappled with their loss and their sense of urgency to honor Ashley’s legacy.

"It’s been really hard," Ashley’s mom, Ann Marie Doolittle, said in an interview at her Loveland home. "The kids were my life."

Ann Marie and Jeff Doolittle, Ashley’s dad, express their grief in measured terms. They appear to be steeled by their mission to establish the Ashley Doolittle Foundation and their time spent unwittingly in the spotlight since their daughter’s high-profile death rocked communities across the state.

They won't talk about the trial or criminal case, but they talk about the silly, goofy, caring young woman that Ashley was and what the foundation will become.

Attorneys in Tanner Flores murder case debate admissibility of police interviews

http://www.dailycamera.com/top-stories/ci_31247242/attorneys-tanner-flores-murder-case-debate-admissibility-police

Attorneys disagree whether an interview between Flores and investigators with Mesa County Sheriff's Office and Larimer County Sheriff's Office should be admitted as evidence in an upcoming trial. Lammons will decide whether a jury hear that interview.

Segments of that interview were shown at a preliminary hearing on the case in January, when a courtroom audience saw Flores on video tell Mesa County Sheriff's Office investigator Danny Norris that Doolittle was shot while riding in the passenger seat of his vehicle on Larimer County Road 21 south of Loveland.

Defense attorneys Daniel Jasinski and Janet Laughon filed motions to suppress portions of that interview with Flores, which lasted about five hours, according to testimony.

Agree about the over-the-top nature of the response but don't think it's a sign of weakness, or that it's necessarily gender-specific -- look at Brenda Delgado, etc. We live in a world where "drama," be it in social media, newspaper headlines, on sports fields and in the workplace trumps reasoning and coping strategies, things that take time. No one, especially a high-schooler, should have to die because they leave someone. Kids need to learn (and most do) that not all forms of loss are terminal.

s

But when an 18 year old' is legally allowed to have guns? That is a recipe for disaster.
