Found Deceased CO - David Puckett, 6, Aurora, 31 Dec 2016

I don't understand the continued emphasis on amber alert criteria. In fact, this case is a prime example of why an Amber Alert should not be issued for every missing child case IMO. People seem to confuse the lack of amber alert as lack of any alert or lack of any action. It reminds me of the spanking debate- some assume a lack of spanking equals a lack of discipline, which is not at all accurate. An alert went out to local residents, which is much more necessary than alerting a much larger radius when there was no suspicion of abduction. A variety of alerts exist for different purposes and it should remain that way.

As mentioned in the briefing, automatically issuing alerts for every case will likely lead to desensitization and citizens turning the alerts off. If an abduction is suspected, it is almost always by someone that is known to the child and therefore would be appropriate to issue a widespread alert with vehicle info, etc.

Stranger abduction is incredibly rare and the majority of times a child is missing without suspicion of abduction by a known person, the child is found in a very close proximity to the home. Thus making the reverse 911 alert and social media blasts of local LE and media outlets much more effective than a broad amber alert.

Edited to add: Bottom line is if an Amber Alert was issued immediately in this case, the outcome sadly would almost certainly have been exactly the same IMO.

I can't watch it, what did they say? TIA.

Mostly they talked about the history of the Amber Alert and why they decided to issue it after all. (Age of child, impending arctic temperatures, etc.) I couldn't listen to the entire thing because I was working but I did hear a reporter ask if something meant they were investigating the mother for neglect (or something similar) and the CBI or the APD said they couldn't comment on an ongoing investigation. I plan on watching it again later. Also, you can watch it on the APD FB page.

if there is no history of abuse or neglect then I don't see why the mom would be arrested. they are investigating.

That's what they are investigating. There seems to be some reason to believe there is a history of abuse or neglect.

no, they investigate any unattended death. if in fact the kid was abused or neglected, LE will decide what steps to take. if not, then it will be deemed an accidental death.

I understand. We are only able to discuss msm and known facts here so I'll leave it at that.

Right there with you. Still trying to confirm two or more independent sources in order to publicly discuss pertinent details.

Eeek. Not sure that is a good response from APD, as they are still investigating

I take that to mean, they had no indication that he had fallen through the ice. So they had no reason to search the pond. I find it to be completely believable, that there was no evidence that he fell into the pond.

More than likely he fell through the ice hole by the fountain. I don't know what the weather conditions were like at the time, but snow and wind could have covered up his tracks, in a short time.

David Puckett case and 'parent shaming': One mom's passionate case against it

A Colorado mom contacted Next to share a “parent shaming” blog post she wrote, after reading negative comments.

Stephanie Sprenger said, “Here’s one thing I know for sure that has never helped keep our children safe from harm: judging and shaming other parents.”

Here’s an excerpt:
Because that is what we are consciously or unconsciously saying when we judge, blame, and shame parents when terrible things happen. 'That could never happen to me.' But of course we all know that it can, in some form or another. We have all turned our backs, crossed our fingers while we ran inside the house for a moment, picked up our phone at a park out of boredom.

On Saturday there was no snow or high wind. I agree that he probably walked out onto the ice and fell in close to the fountain, if there was ice. Otherwise, the pond is not deep so it's possible he got in or slipped in near one of the pathways and then was pulled towards the center by one of the fountain's pumps.

It was relatively warm that day and the sun was shining all day. It got colder overnight so I think it's plausible that the pond could have been mostly covered in ice before the sun rose.

The bad weather started Tuesday and and went through yesterday. It was cold Sunday night, warm-ish Monday, and Monday night is when it reached way below freezing and he wind picked up.

Momma2cam and I were not necessarily speaking about what happened on Saturday.

I would never advocate for mom shaming. I would never say this incident couldn't happen to anyone, myself included. Hindsight is always 20/20.

I was referring to different information related to the possible history.

I don't think I've seen any parent shaming on here. I think there is concern that there may be more to the story and/or a history of abuse/neglect & LE is obligated to investigate that.

SM has definitely brought parent shaming to a whole level & I'm sure there are plenty of other sites where people are cruelly bashing the mom. As a mom I often feel like I can't win. You're either a helicopter parent stifling your kiddos childhood or you're neglectful, selfish parent.

Hey, I said somewhere up there that this so could have happened to me when my son was young. I do not want anyone to think I was trying to shame anybody because even if there ends up being a history here, that family has still lost their baby. I can't imagine what they must be going through.

Exactly. Completely agree.

I played around any water I could find when I was a kid, summer or winter. I'm from Missouri and there are lakes, ponds, springs, creeks and rivers all over the place. What's the difference between my parents and this child's parents? I didn't slip in the wrong place at the wrong time? For all I know that may be the only difference.
