Paul Gallenstein was born August 4th, 1959 in Ohio. Paul's early years were spent in Massachusetts until his family moved to Fort Collins, Colorado when he was 14. Paul received his BS degree in Economics in 1981 from Colorado State University. In 1987 he married his wife Cindy at St. Joseph Catholic church.

Paul loved fly-fishing, and was a kind and God-fearing man. He was active within his community, even Paul had no children of his own, he was known for mentoring young adults. Paul also had a entrepreneurial spirit, he founded a 55 gated community called Sunflower Active Adult community, with his wife. in 2016 Paul and Cindy had decided to retire after 20 years of operating Sunflowers, so spend the rest of their lives traveling, cooking, Fly-fishing and enjoying time with the people they cared about. But on September 10, 2023 Paul's life was tragically cut short.

On the morning of September 10th, 2023, Paul looking forward to his upcoming fly-fishing trip, and later that day he planed to watch a football game with his wife; Paul had recently underwent a procedure on his heart a few weeks prior, but he was finally cleared by his doctor for physical activity so Paul had decided to take a solo hike- something he did often.

Paul drove five miles from his house to hike at the popular Foothills Trail, this popular trail winds along Fort Collins's Horse tooth reservoir. Despite this being a popular trail no one heard or saw what had happened to him.

At 10:18 am a call was placed to 911, by a male runner and a female cyclist who had come cross Paul's body on the trail around skyline Picnic Area. Pauls cause of death was due to multiple gunshot wounds, The location and amount have not been released.

No weapons or casings were found at the scene, and nothing was found to be missing from Paul or his vehicle. According to the two witnesses, they didn't see anyone else on the trail and had heard no gunshots. Both of these witnesses were cleared by police. The authorities have no suspects or persons of interest and no motive, so the case is starting get cold.

There of course had been other theories as to what happened to Paul but none of them match up, suicide was a possible theory but there was no weapon at the scene and according to loved ones he had no money problems nor marital problems, so this theory doesn't check out. A source claims that Paul had his headphones in and was listing to his favorite fly-fishing podcast when he was shot which would make a confrontation unlikely Still to this day Paul's death has remained a homicide and has remained unsolved

I have lived in the area for most of my life and remember seeing the news when Mr. Gallenstein was found. I have seen the billboards around town, and over the past month, I have been feeling a call to put my energy towards this case. I have never looked into anything like a missing person or a mysterious death, and I have no idea where to begin. I would be very open to and grateful for any information or ideas on where to start here.

Reading the articles above, it sounds like there is a lot of information that LE is not releasing to the public.

I personally would be interested to know the sort of gun used and how many times he was shot. My first thought was hunting accident and someone panicked. The first article linked above says that there is no legal hunting in the area where he was found. I wonder if this was an accident and someone knew they’d be in big trouble for illegal hunting on top of killing someone. That could explain why the runner and the cyclist saw no one on the trail. Maybe they were off the trail in a hide and left the area another route before first responders arrived. MOO

Thank you for your response! You're right, it does sound like there is a lot that is being withheld from the public. I would also really like to know what kind of gun was used. Where Mr. Gallenstein was found is actually a very active trail that is on the outskirts of Ft. Collins, and it is technically still in town. Hunting is not likely, but you never know! When I went to pay my respects, I saw a couple different groups of trees. I sent in a suggestion to the Sheriff's dept. that they put trail cams up on them to see who may linger around the cross or area, especially around the anniversary of the murder. Aside from the couple groups of trees, it is a very wide open space on an incline. I am unsure of where to go from here.
