Forensic specialists have advised the Sheriff that the remains found Monday are that of an “ancient, archaeological Native American child.” Evidence shows the remains were recently discarded, possibly from a moving vehicle, from an unknown location and for unknown reasons. Sheriff’s Deputies will continue to investigate this case with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) with possible federal criminal charges filed. Deputies are investigating the finding of decayed human remains in the Disappointment Valley area in the West End of San Miguel County. Citizens found the remains Monday afternoon and called authorities. The remains have been sent to forensic specialists for evaluation. Sheriff Bill Masters said there’s no apparent threat to public safety. “We are committed to determining the identity of this individual to help bring closure to his or her family,” he said. The area where the remains were found is closed to human activity until Deputies complete their investigation.
