Yes, that's the typical procedure, he'll have a few words for them after closings and before they go off to deliberate but the vast majority before closings.

I don't know, with the judge immediately asking the jury if they've had any problems following his admonitions after saying 11 was excused it almost sounded like 11 was excused for some reason.

Trying to think of other trials where juror has been dismissed or excused and whether the Judge gives a reason.. I tend to remember yes. Seems they are usually clear for the record, whether it's an illness, family emergency, or violating admonitions,.etc. And in this case would the Judge have indicated which alternate will now take the place? Oh well, this is why there are alternates.

Juror #11 has been excused.

Could be for a number of reasons. I was a juror within the last few months and right before closing, one of the other jurors was dismissed - we found out after the verdict (the judge kept us there to advise of information that was previously not available - never knew they did that!) that the juror that was dismissed had actually fallen asleep several times during the trial!
