GUILTY CO - Gannon Stauch, 11, found deceased, Colorado Springs, El Paso County, 27 Jan 2020 *Arrest* #70

Quite a bit of drama going on elsewhere regarding the few creators who acquired crime scene & autopsy photos from the Court & are making them available behind paywalls.

While they are technically part of public records it appears (because public was able to get them thru requests) I’m saddened to see anyone making purely profit over such gruesome and personal images. The true crime community can be a very strange bunch, thankful the “drama” I mentioned keeps itself on other sites and doesn’t make it here to WS and for that I am very grateful.
Seeing them once on the Webex was more than enough, and I am someone who is actively interested in forensics, including the science of bodies.

But when it all comes down to it, these are photos of an eleven year old victim without clothing being put behind a paywall for entertainment. They should all be walking very, very carefully. The authorities may find a way to crack down on them, and they may use laws designed to combat CSAM to do it.

MOO

Thank you for putting this on, it was intriguing to watch.

I totally agree. And for those motivated purely by the idea of money, some social media outrage may not fully deter them from doing this again. It’s just very sad to see.

I even saw one creator, one who is often mentioned and praised on this board, promoting the photos as “goodies lol”. I still can’t see what is to laugh about or why one would refer to such terrible photos as some sort of goodies. I definitely lost some trust & questioned the intent after I saw they did that
And FWIW this creator is somehow “surviving” for lack of a better term, this social media outrage as it’s been focused on a few others. I view them all in the same sort of bucket now, it’s one thing to try and profit off of these but it’s another to laugh about them but JMO

This is horrid.

They may also be opening themselves up to lawsuits from the surviving family. You can't tell me that Gannon's parents, his sisters (including HH), his aunt, his grandparents... you can't tell me that any of them would be okay with random people monetising his autopsy pictures. This is nothing to do with the court case or freedom of information, it's about profiting from the horrific, violent death of a child. This case has been public enough that a reputable, established lawyer would probably rep the family for low or no fee - the optics of repping them would be payment enough.

I am not a lawyer, of any kind, but this is all kinds of hinky and I think the fact that they're charging for access could be their downfall, but because I am not a lawyer, this is all very much my opinion only.

This is horrid.
It is

I truly wish there was something that could be done about it. I’m baffled that only two creators (and not the person I was referring to) is getting called out for it. I am still shocked that you could call crime scene images your “goodies lol”. In fear of if I say more their followers will continue to badger my social media,

I just want to say again that this was so disappointing to see. I wish everyone doing this May at least think twice before doing such a thing again. (This user sold crime scene pics in another case and only stopped when family’s attorney wrote to them….but seeing that they’re doing it yet again, I’m not sure they were really deterred from doing it). I also don’t want to break any site guidelines so I won’t name them here for those two reasons.

Please think twice if you really want to monetarily support people selling these types of things. It’s one thing to get records from a case but to then freely and openly share the worst of them, you’re right, I can’t imagine how the family and friends and colleagues of the victims would feel. Thankfully I’m pretty confident most WSers wouldn’t want to support such this, we are a very Justice-focused group and operate with morals, ethics and values. Obviously I can’t speak for everyone but that’s the sense I get every time I read and post here. JMOO and FWIW.

I’m horrified by that. How dare they treat autopsy photos of an 11 year old child as entertainment that they can monetise? How dare they??!

I was revolted by the few I saw via the trial. They do not belong on the internet. They don’t belong anywhere but in the case archives.

Let Gannon rest. I’m so angry and upset about this.

Well, to one of them they’re not “selling” they are just collecting “donations for coffee”.

You articulated all of my feelings better than I could. It is so sad to see this. Just because public can obtain it doesn’t mean it needs to be already everywhere and given away in exchange for something, be it money or donations or coffee, or for literally anything else.

I fail to see any benefits of doing this, besides a few making money to pay bills, everything else I can think of falls right in the “this is terrible” column. Photos like this don’t further public understanding, they don’t provide further insight into a case - they quite literally just share and store gruesome, horrendous images of a child’s fate into the open world of the internet for who knows how long.

I need to take a brief break from here, this has really upset me. I’m thankful those here also find this despicable. I apologize for venting.

Thank you for sharing that. I like to think I follow a few decent and respectful true crime channels, but I am going to double check them all.

I think of Gannon and his family every single day. I never want to remember him the way we saw him in those photos. This is the sweet boy who bought me to WS.
