I think people can't help thinking of what they feel they would do, in a similar situation, that they would want any chance to get on TV, maybe the tiny chance that their child might see them or hear their message to the child. In fact, who knows what one would really, but I think most people feel they would be itching to get on camera to try to plea for safe return and to tell child they loved them.
You don't know what you will do until you are there. When my son was missing, I was in shock for the first few hours. Your mind tells you that this isn't real. But this I can assure you, I would move heaven and earth if it was within my power. Facing the camera? You bet. I would get on my knees and beg if it helped me find my son.
LE asked me to make some important but difficult phone calls, receive some uncomfortable calls, and make a personal plea for phone and other records to try to help them avoid the time it would take to get court orders. I did it willingly...grateful to be allowed to help. Thankfully, our son was located 3 days later and was relatively physically safe. But life has never been the same for our family. Ever.
Dealing with the aftermath of his disappearance eventually led me to Websleuths. It has been very therapeutic for me to be here...and to see the love and concern that the members here have for people they have never met.
I treasure every one of you.
