Colorado landfill search confirmed to be connected to Kelsey Berreth murder investigation: Report
An expected search of a landfill in Colorado is connected to the Kelsey Berreth investigation, a source has confirmed to a local news station.

As CrimeOnline previously reported, a spokesperson for Midway Landfill in Fountain, Colorado, told ABC News that authorities had been in contact about a search of the facility, which is about 40 miles from Woodland Park, where Berreth was last seen alive and where authorities reportedly believe she was killed. It is not known at this time when the search is expected to begin.

KOAA reporter Sam Kraemer posted an update on Twitter Thursday afternoon, writing that a Waste Management spokesperson had confirmed the expected search was in fact part of the investigation into Berreth’s presumed murder. The reporter added that the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and the District Attorney’s Office have not commented on the report of the landfill search, citing the sealed investigation records.

Kelsey Berreth search may extend to landfill near Fountain
When bodies end up in landfills, law enforcement experts say it takes large amounts of resources to find them.

Temperatures in landfills are often cooler than on the surface, which slows the rate of decomposition, said Melissa Connor, director of the Forensic Investigation Research Station at Colorado Mesa University. More important than heat is time.

Even with the cold weather, the nearly two months that have passed since Berreth’s disappearance does not bode well for the chances of finding her, Connor said.

“The faster you get in and do the search the more likely you are to find the target,” she said.

When Detective Sgt. Barry Hartkopp of the Boulder Police Department heard the news that the Berreth investigators might search a landfill, his first thought was wanting to help.

Hartkopp helped lead a team from Boulder that spent a month combing an Arkansas landfill for the parts of the dismembered body of Ashley Mead, a Boulder woman who was murdered by her ex-boyfriend in February 2017.

Missing Colorado mom's close friend reveals red flags about her fiancé - WDEF
AC told CBS News’ Nikki Battiste her friend had a lot going for her: a dream job, a baby and a fiancé. But she said Berreth also often appeared to be upset, and she believes, it had to do with Frazee.

“The moment that I found out that she had been missing, the first words that came out of my mouth were, ‘He did something to her,'” Cogburn said.

Cogburn said she saw red flags in their relationship, including that he was always “mad about something.”

“She couldn’t win … the things that he would say to her were somewhat demeaning … I remember one time in particular she came to me and she was just crying. And Kelsey is this – she’s a tough girl … and I can’t remember specifics, but I just remember gathering, ‘This person is borderline emotionally abusive to you right now.”

Cogburn and Berreth met in elementary school and grew up like sisters in Washington state. They recently lived together in Colorado while Berreth, who was pregnant at the time with Frazee’s child, was working nearby as a pilot.

“Kelsey was a kind, sweet girl. She kind of had it all going on. She was, you know, she was really smart. She was on top of her game in life,” Cogburn said. “She was doing it all.”

Cogburn said she had at times encouraged Berreth to end her relationship with Frazee, but Berreth believed she could still make it work. Cogburn now believes Berreth would just want to know her daughter Kaylee is safe.

Kelsey Berreth's friend believes her fiancé was "borderline emotionally abusive"
A close friend of the Colorado mom who disappeared two months ago today is speaking out for the first time about Kelsey Berreth's relationship with her fiancé Patrick Frazee. Berreth is presumed dead and Frazee has been charged with her murder.

"Kelsey was a kind, sweet girl who was spunky and playful, you know, shy at first but was really easy to get along with," Cogburn said. "I'm just thankful for the friendship that she gave me and for being the person that she was. I mean, I'm inspired by her and I'll just – I'll just take that. And I know that she – that's what she would want. She would want us to focus on the good."

She went on to say that Frazee was 'borderline emotionally abusive,' while describing her childhood friend as a 'tough girl' who was smart and very much in love with her baby daughter K.

As for Frazee, Cogbun said: 'He was just always mad about something.'

Friend says Kelsey Berreth was ‘adventurous’, ‘sharp’
Haywood said she wants the honor the life and memory of her dear friend in the face of tragedy.

“You know, it was absolutely devastating when I first heard that she had gone missing,” Haywood said. “You see this stuff in the news all the time, but it’s never been this close to home with someone you grew up with.”

Haywood, speaking to News 5’s Sam Kraemer over Skype, said Berreth was like a little sister to her.

They spent countless days together in grade school. Haywood knew Berreth as an adventurous, outdoorsy and responsible.

“When you first meet Kelsey, she’s super shy, very quiet. But behind that quiet exterior is someone that’s very sharp, very intelligent,” Haywood said.

Haywood said she never spoke to Berreth about her relationship with Patrick Frazee. She was, though, happy that Berreth found love.

Kelsey Berreth's lifelong friend speaks out
"It's just really hard knowing that she's not going to come back," said Haywood.

Haywood says she never met Frazee and Berreth kept quiet about their relationship. She says the couple met online about two years ago and Frazee was the reason why Kelsey moved to Colorado.

"I hope the truth comes out in very clear terms. I want whoever is guilty to be held accountable for and if someone is innocent I hope they don't get charged," said Haywood.

Haywood says she has been in contact with Berreth's parents who currently have custody over Berreth's 1-year-old daughter.

"I have two little girls and I can't imagine them growing up and wondering who I was, but those of us who are going to be surrounding her are going to try and help her know who Kelsey was," said Haywood.

The people at the landfill said they are cooperating fully. What is there to cooperate with at this time? The only thing I can think of in terms of cooperating is "Don't add any refuse to the spot where refuse was added around Thanksgiving"...O.K. we will cooperate with that.
