I think they would have informed her mother, if he solicited undercover, he would have been arrested before anything bad happened.

I agree, they wouldn't let it get that far, they would have done him on conspiracy etc to solicit someone to do a murder.

Apparently they met on an online dating site.

I don’t think we can really draw too many conclusions about him based on court videos and still photographs.

Personally, as far as that court video goes, I got the feeling that he was understanding of the gravity of his current situation.

He looked nervous to me.

There is obviously something “off” about him, as he is a cold blooded murderer.

I just don’t think we can diagnose him with anything based on the limited information we have.
Sure we can diagnose him --- he abuses animals and most likely murdered or hired someone to murder the mother of his child.

I wonder how long it would take LE to recover texts/emails between PF & KB on PF’s phone if they were deleted? This could shed more light on the nature of their relationship or if KB did know if PF had anything shady going on & had called him on it.

  • #964
I really wonder what drew KB to PF in the first place. From the little information we have they almost seem to come from two different worlds. For her to be in the type of career she was, I just don’t understand the attraction to him.

Did anyone else observe his mannerisms being odd in the court videos, and also I know it’s been mentioned before with his awkward holding of baby K, but there is also a picture I saw where he literally looks like he is about to drop her & is so focused on looking at the camera not paying any attention to what he’s doing.

I know it’s thrown around a lot, but is it possible he could be autistic or if not something else going on? There just seems something off about his facial reactions & mannerisms. In contrast, she was very attractive & put together seeming.
KB is the daughter of farmers. Her uncle said that her interest in flying came from watching the cropdusters spray her parents fields when she was young. She wanted to be a pilot when she grew up.

She loved hiking, animals, riding horses, and being outdoors.

It's not a stretch that she would fall for PF's profile on the online dating service.

true most killers started out torturing animals

btw the fact that they met online isn't necessarily a factor i met my husband online we have been together 30 yrs

And who knows what he wrote in his dating profile. It is fairly likely that it was a big snow job.

Hi, WSers. I’m trying desperately to catch up after some family travel.

I’ve been stewing over the “robbery.”

Something just popped in my head. It is probably too far fetched, but then again, who knows what kinds of plans someone who solicits murder, will try to come up with.

CB said she was surprised that Kelsey’s hair was not done before going to Safeway. Suggesting that something, in CB’s mind, appeared “off” in KB’s routine.

We have not seen footage of Kelsey coming out of the store. In the scenario I’m offering, POSSIBLY someone was waiting for her. (Or even with her).

I went to the Woodland Park Safeway website, and listed under Services: Bank- Wells Fargo.

Safeway at 1101 E US Hwy 24 Woodland Park, CO| Weekly Ad, Grocery, Pharmacy

(Hypothetically) What if PF or accomplice threatened Kelsey at gunpoint (or other), if she did not go to Safeway (Bank) and withdrawal a large sum of money? Threatened her life and/or Baby K’s if she were to signal for any kind of help in the store.

This withdrawal could serve multiple purposes.

By Kelsey withdrawing a large some of money before “disappearing,” it adds to the picture that PF seemed to be painting, that Kelsey willingly skipped town.

The large sum could also be used to pay the solicitee or any other accomplices. PF himself, may have needed the money to help cover up his crime.

It would only be KB on camera at the ATM (assuming it was just a Wells Fargo ATM, not full service bank - esp. due to holiday).

To my knowledge, we have never heard anything from LE about KB’s last credit card or bank activity before or after disappearance. Possibly, they withheld this info. for good reason.

We have seen crimes before, where someone is threatened in their home, and is instructed to go make a withdrawal, and on delivering the money back at home, is subsequently killed.

In this scenario, why would she go to Safeway ATM vs. drive thru ATM? I guess that would depend on whether the perp was with/near/watching her. If she had freedom to choose, obviously Safeway would buy her more visibility. Or, PF thought her getting money and certain items at store would be more “proof” that Kelsey willingly left town. Who knows? Maybe this was the only ATM KB used in the past...

As far as how the rest went down, there are many possibilities. But I just wanted to offer a new “robbery” theory. (Apologies if this has already been theoried- I am still catching up on threads).

Thoughts? Way too far fetched? Possibility?

MOO

ETA- Western Union is also listed under services at that Safeway. I’ve never used the “cash back” option when paying by credit card. But that too (if requested by perp), could have make it look more like KB is preparing for a trip.

My ATM has a daily cash limit of $300, and you can only withdraw that once a day. I don't think she would be able to withdraw $$thousands from an ATM, and yes the teller window would be closed on Thanksgiving Day.

The "Cash Bach" option is a maximum of $100, I think.
I know what you are saying, but I don't think she could be forced to withdraw enough to make it worthwhile. Even if she was taken to multiple locations,

I'm starting to come around to the idea that PF may have had another gf. The article where his friend says he's known him since they were kids and that KB and PF had been broken up since 1/1/2018 and the Nancy Grace podcast of Dec. 26 are leading me to think this might be so. I think this was a lie PF told his friends and other women and I doubt KB knew that he was saying it. She may have caught him cheating at some point maybe even repeatedly, but he probably convinced her he wouldn't see anyone else, blah-blah-blah. MOO. Opinions?

I have also wondered if he is on the spectrum, NOT because of crimes, but because of his flat affect and lack of reaction for example when cameras are thrust inches from his face. Again, being on the spectrum does NOT make him criminal , so please do not take my comment the wrong way. JMO, observation (comes from 25 years as a classroom teacher) and wondering aloud.

  • #970
How might your beliefs about this case change if you discovered he solicited undercover law enforcement? Would the pieces fall into place? Would the bizarre behavior of everyone involved suddenly make sense? What if the undercover agent was supposed to do the deed and then provide PF with evidence, like her phone, before collecting payment? And what if she is still alive, in protective custody while the sting plays out?
Seriously??

I am not sure where Nancy Grace got her information about a gf. I listened to her podcast and IF I remember correctly, was she referencing rumors that she had heard?
The CW case is very fresh in my mind, so my opinion is most likely colored by the fact there was another woman involved there (in the CW case). JMO.

Seems that PF was having difficulty following/processing the discussion during the last hearing. As a retired (non verified) attorney I was also struck by the lack of communication between PF and defense counsel.

Of course I would be even more horrified, but I try to remember that this is not a fictional story and in my speculation lose sight that this is a real case with a real victim and devastated and heartbroken family members . I mean no disrespect for your theory or you.

What We Know About The Crime So Far:

Kelsey Berreth was last seen on video shopping at a Safeway grocery store with her 15 month old (Baby K) on Nov 22, 2018-- Thanksgiving Day;
She entered the store at 12:05 PM and exited the store at 12:27 PM.

Patrick Frazee told police he last saw Kelsey Berreth on November 22, when he picked up their daughter (Baby K), making him the last known person to report seeing her alive.

3 days later, on Nov 25th KB’s cell phone sent texts to PF and KB’s employer. That same day KB’s phone pinged for the last time near Gooding, Idaho.

Patrick Frazee was arrested on Dec 21, 2018 on charges of first-degree murder and solicitation to commit first-degree murder.

Investigators believe KB is no longer alive and that she was murdered in her home on Nov 22, 2018.

PF was officially charged on Dec 31, 2018 with 2 counts of 1st degree murder and with 3 counts of solicitation to commit murder. Charges can be viewed here: https://www.courts.state.co.us/userfiles/file/Court_Probation/04th_Judicial_District/Teller/caseofinterest/2018CR330/001/Redacted C&I 18CR330.pdf

Prosecutors filed two murder charges because they have different theories. One is that PF acted alone to kill KB, the other says PF alone or with other people killed KB during a robbery.

The 3 solicitation charges refer to 3 separate incidents-- that may mean PF asked up to 3 individuals to murder KB, OR it may mean he asked the same person on 3 different occasions to murder KB.

The alleged solicitations to murder KB occurred between Sept. 1 and Nov. 1, 2018.

No other individuals have been named as being involved in the solicitation charges yet.

There is forensic evidence in the case that needs to be tested using consumptive testing. Consumptive testing explanation: Consumptive Forensic DNA Testing •

The probable cause affidavit outlining the case against PF has been sealed due to concerns for witness safety and the ongoing investigation. We may get to see the affidavit by Jan 29, 2019 when PF has a preliminary hearing.

KB’s body has not yet been found.

PF remains in police custody without bond.

Info from people who know PF:
“He worked on my horses for a real short time till he punched one in the gut with a rasp and that was about the last time I let him work on my horses,” -MG

'It's a characteristic that was ongoing for years. Anytime he was at a rope and his horse didn't act right, he'd rip on his face, kick him. In the community, we were all at ropings and stuff, but if the horse doesn't do exactly what it's supposed to do you don't just beat them.' -MG

'One time we were at a rodeo in Cripple Creek and he got mad because his horse didn't do good and somebody didn't heel just right to help him get in the money and he got so mad he left out of Cripple Creek Rodeo, flipped his horse trailer with his horse in it and almost killed that horse.

'He got mad, tries to get his vehicle out of there and there's too many cars tightly packed in. Lots of people were there. -MG

'He was in a rage of being mad and angry, because the heeler didn't heel and they lost out the money. It was kind of a sad deal, especially trying to get the horse out that was traumatic for everybody.' -MG

A former girlfriend of PF declined to speak to the press but her partner commented saying that he knew Frazee to be aggressive with horses and dogs but that he did not beat his girlfriends.

“He cheated on her while she was in the hospital, take that for what it’s worth,” the man said of his current partner’s former relationship with Frazee

'Patrick is a horseshoer, I heard once he was thumping on the horse "saying this is how you've got to do it," that horse reared up and kicked him right in the forehead, he got a bunch of stitches and his [then] girlfriend hauled him to the hospital to get stitches.' -High School Classmate of PF

'Oh yeah, he's a recluse for sure. I haven't seen him in 10 years or so.' -High School Classmate of PF

A neighbor heard 'mixed things' about Frazee's alleged rough behavior with animals.

He was quiet and shy. He had his own friends circle and stayed close to his friends,' he said.

'He did come across, "I'm a big tough cowboy." But that's that cowboy way, got be strong.

'That's how he was raised, he raised horses. I think if you're raised country that's normal, if you're raised city it's going to seem harsh. It's not wrong in his eyes. Sometimes there's neglect and over abuse yes, he'd tread the fine line on it I'd say. You've got make a horse submit to what you want to do. You've got to be kind of firm. You shouldn't hit them.' --Former Neighbor HF

Two friends of Patrick defended him and rejected any suggestion he was cruel towards animals:
'He's an old fashioned cowboy. He's just old school, he does things the old way. He shoes horses modern, but he trains horses the way people used to do it, I wouldn't say that he's cruel or not. He's a stand up real good guy. I've just known him for years and he's a great person.'

The friend said he had not met Frazee's fiancée but added: 'I know the day I saw him he was a great dad to the daughter and he's a good guy. He was fine. --Man who saw PF shoe horses in Sept.

'I know him, when we had horses he used to trim our horses hooves. He was a very nice young man, I knew him all growing up, we used to go to the Gymkhana and the rodeos when he was younger. I've known him since 2003 and I never saw him do anything inappropriate or out of order.' -DR, runs the propane store

"I've always considered him to be a gentle soul. Soft spoken and just really down to Earth and practical." “couldn’t imagine him doing anything that would harm anyone.” -Friend, SO

PF was “professional, a nice guy and dependable,” according to CC, President of the Two Mile High Club

PF occasionally brought Baby K with him to work, and CC’s wife would care for her while he worked. PF has been the “main parental provider” over the last year or so and “a good father.” - CC, President of the Two Mile High Club

“He took real good care of her (Baby K). I mean, he had a little jumpsuit for her and put extra socks on her,” - CC, President of the Two Mile High Club

LS said he went through 4H with Frazee when they were children, and he leases a bull from Frazee for his cows. Frazee kept to himself, LS said, but could hold a conversation when engaged. – CNN

PF never spoke poorly of Berreth, said GB, owner of Outpost Feed and Ranch Supply in Florissant where Frazee was a customer. His daughter was always with him and she was always well behaved and appeared to be cared for, GB said. --CNN

KB often talked about her boyfriend (PF) at her Springs Aviation job in 2016
Baby K was born Oct 2017

"I mean they had plans, you know, they were planning to find a place for them to live and so forth and the economy with prices dropping out...Kelsey's fiance has some cattle and stuff and prices were poor and so the money just wasn't available as soon as they had hoped, but they make it work."-- KB's mom

There were no records of any domestic issues between the couple --Woodland Police Chief Miles De Young

“Like most relationships it has ups and downs but for the most part it's a good relationship,” -Frazee’s lawyer

KB's parents were skeptical of Frazee from the start, describing him as an "odd duck" --close friend of the family from church

Kelsey’s Neighbor AG had always assumed Frazee lived there with Kelsey and the baby as she would see him come and go in his red work truck.

Neighbor AG never heard any arguing

“Questions linger about the exact status of the couple’s relationship, with relatives saying Berreth had called off the engagement weeks before she went missing. Others have stated the couple split the day of the killing.” – Unnamed Sources from People Magazine

“Two friends said Frazee told them that the relationship with Berreth ended months ago -- claims that contradict statements from Berreth's aunt, who wrote on Facebook that Berreth broke up with Frazee the same day she went missing.” –CNN Quote

Hello - I have been lurking around for over a month, but this is my first time posting. I have also never followed a case before, but something about Kelsey’s disappearance just grabbed my attention and now I’m hooked.

One thing that continues to bother me is PF’s motive. I have heard people speculating about custody and/or child support but that is hard for me to believe. I do not know about Colorado custody laws, but in California (where I live) a mother can’t just move with the child. Unless she can prove that she is the primary caregiver (ie father only sees child a few times a month) she has no more “right” to simply pick up and move the baby then the father would. As a matter of fact, since the baby’s routine has already been set in Woodland Park, she would have to get Patrick’s permission to move the baby (based on how things are in CA).

In regards to child support - if both KB and PF continued to share custody (and again KB can’t just make the decision she no longer wants to share, they would need to go to court) the court looks at the income for both parents. Therefore if KB is making more than PF, then he would not owe her child support. She actually may need to pay him if she is making more.

Again, perhaps Colarado is different than California, but my sister went through all of these custody issues with my twin niece/nephew when they were 4. My sister moved 30 min away after the split and she couldn’t even move their preschool to the city she now lived in (without the fathers approval) - she had to commute them there and back during her custody days.

This was a long post (I apologize!) but it just makes me question PF being motivated to murder for custody or child support based on my knowledge of custody and child support rules. MOO

I still wonder if they moved so fast with the arrest because they got wind he was going to flee. Not fact, just a hunch.

I have wondered the same thing. LE had him under surveillance. The arrest was Friday 12/21 right at the beginning of a long Christmas weekend. I wondered if they saw SF & PF loading up the vehicles for a trip to see family and LE decided they better move in right away.

Holy crap, that’s a hell of a lot of work.

I think it’s safe to say you didn’t miss anything, and with a list that extensive, I genuinely wouldn’t be surprised if you included things that haven’t happened yet.

No one has an excuse for not knowing this case inside and out now.

Exactly. We have to remember that both their homes were basically in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. For people that have never visited the Rocky mountains just think of a small Mount Everest except covered with tall pine trees and woods everywhere. There are sporadic homes, cabins, and small communities but there are also thousands upon thousands of acres of remote woods so thick you can easily get lost and never find your way out. He would be familiar with back logging roads that typically need a 4 wheeler to drive around the mountainous back roads.

So unfortunately if he chose to bury or put her body in a shallow grave in the woods he had many choices that he probably knew about.

With that said, I am kind of leaning to something more sinister. Awhile back we had discussed the possibility that he may have known someone or had access himself to an incinerator that may have been used in cattle processing. Or even on his own property he may have had a homemade kiln type outdoor fireplace made of cinder blocks that he may have used to burn trash.

If a fire is hot enough and large enough and burns long enough, it can do a pretty efficient job of burning even bones and reducing almost everything to ash.

I have shared on other cases that I once did an experiment because I have always been curious if a normal large fire can reduce bones to ash. I burn a lot of wood debris and one particular day I had a very large fire going and happened to see a dead possum that had gotten killed by another animal. I decided to test if the fire could reduce the entire thing to ash. The fire I had going was huge and very hot. I was burning an entire old tree that had fallen and I had cut it up with a chainsaw and the fire was roughly 10-15 feet diameter across. I put the dead possum in one of the hottest parts of the fire and about 2 hours later I was surprised that nothing but ashes was left. I had expected to see at least some of the skull left but nothing at all was left except ash. And this was just a normal outdoor open fire. It made me realize that if someone built a cinder block fire area with cinder block walls and purposely wanted to reduce down a body with fire they could reduce most all of a body to ash if they worked a little at it.

He had the property for something like that or he may have known someone that had a real incinerator rigged up. Something like using a propane tank to feed propane gas through a pipe into a cinder block boxed in area and had wood and other fuel to contain the fire and keep it very hot. Some farmers have rigs like this to burn trash down to nothing. Or maybe he knew someone that had access to an incinerator used in cattle processing for entrails and other unwanted parts.

Since he seemed to have planned this well in advance and since he seemed so confident he would not be caught I have been thinking he was more devious in how he disposed of her. A scary thought is that LE may already know what he did with her and maybe she is not recoverable.

But then again he may have just chose a remote place in the woods which was also an easy option for him.

My hope is he slipped up in who he talked to and they have come forward to help LE know what he actually did with her.
@otto posted a map link recently while sleuthing military in Idaho. I was taken aback, the closest named business google pulled up was a custom meat processor.

I believe her mom had stated early on they had them for breakfast- pre-Safeway trip.
I had read that too, and I don't mean to single you out, but does anyone have proof of that? Where did that come from?
