Isn't this usually done after the trial? I thought about them doing this a few nights ago but remembered that PF has nothing in his name that we're aware of, so they probably won't get a dime for little KB.
I'm not sure, but I think sometimes the family does this so PF can't profit from any book deals and other ways to make money. It might be a way to put a lien on any property he may hold. Say, his family can't sell off his livestock. I'm sure the Berreths are doing this for the sake of their granddaughter.
