As a teacher in the area, I am too disturbed and upset to post here about all this right now. jmo

Hope Claire pulls through.

(hugs) I'm so sorry for what your community has gone through. The amount of trauma....

I wish I knew what to say or do. I wish we could find a answer and prevent this from ever happening again.

It's a problem that our whole country has to face and it needs to be a priority.

sad to see a complete thread now on "rampage killings and terrorist attacks". This is now the 'plague' in our lives.

Prayers for Claire, and all those affected by someone else's selfish and malicious actions. I hope she pulls through, and everyone finds a way to heal after this horrible experience.

What is going on?

Throughout time, society has grown up with weapons, used for hunting, safety and sport and these things didn't happen. A gun was a necessity in the old days, before gun safes were ever invented.

What are some of the things these killers have in common?

They are male (this is a fact in nearly 100% of these crimes. Why?)

There seems to be some event or something going on in their lives prior to committing these acts. The event is nothing major, but a part of life in which life has it's ups, downs and disappointments.

They seem to be consumed with anger or hatred and blame others. Not that uncommon to have these thoughts, but these take it to a level of committing murder.

I seem to be seeing a lot that have unusual political beleifs or are into conspiracy type thinking. Paranoia??

If it's mental illness, then what has caused a rise in mental illness in our society and to the point of murdering others like this?

What is different in society now, than it was in prior years, that could be causing an increase in this type of behavior?

Self entitlement, narcissism, apathy, sociopaths/psychopaths, no empathy, mental illness undiagnosed, not properly treated or treated inappropriately with experimental pharm/meds, not institutionalizing them sooner, parents in denial. A dangerous cocktail.

Today: Friend read bomb guide

video at link:
http://www.today.com/video/today/53843023#53843023

Sigh! So according to the video he purchased the shotgun he used himself and he was handing out copies of the bomb making guide to other students. What a strange thing to have someone give you.

Young people don't think about danger signs. They don't think about horrible things that could happen or that someone they know is capable of committing such acts. They just think that the person is "weird". The more typical response from other students would be to shun or make fun of the person.

The response is really not that different with adults, unless you have experienced trauma or are somewhat educated on what to look for.

I think I read he was expelled for threatening a teacher. I wonder if he was ever in counseling.

(CNN) -
Friends of Claire Davis, the 17-year-old senior critically wounded in Friday's shooting at a Colorado high school, are wondering why bad things happen to good people.

Davis is in a struggle for her life at a hospital in Littleton, near Arapahoe High School, where a classmate shot her in the head.

She remained in critical condition Sunday...

Colorado school shooter wrote Latin phrase, classroom numbers on his arm

By Tracy Connor, Staff Writer, NBC News

The Colorado school-shooting gunman wrote the Latin phrase Alea iacta est — meaning "The die has been cast" — on his arm, along with numbers and letters that investigators believe outlined his plan for carnage, officials said Thursday.

Karl Pierson, 18, who was upset he lost his spot on the debate team, entered Arapahoe High School on Friday heavily armed and looking for the speech coach, who was also the librarian, friends and officials have said.

But police now suspect he may have had other targets because of the markings found on his forearm after he critically wounded senior Claire Davis and killed himself...
