Charges to be dismissed in Phoenix freeway shooting case

The man authorities have described as the Phoenix freeway shooter who terrorized the city last year received a huge victory Friday with prosecutors deciding to dismiss all charges — for now.

Jerry Cobb, spokesman for Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery, said that the office filed a motion to dismiss the charges, which include carrying out a drive-by shooting, without prejudice against Leslie Merritt Jr.

Thanks for the update, KayElJay.

Also from the above link:

""In conjunction with (the Department of Public Safety), we have identified additional forensic investigation that needs to be completed in order for the case to proceed," Cobb said.

This action will allow them "the necessary time" to file charges again, Cobb added. He declined to comment further."

Snip

"He was released from jail Tuesday after a judge reduced his bond — once set at $1 million — to zero. He was allowed to return home under electronic monitoring."

*more at link. It says his lawyers say his phone records and the ballistics information provide him an alibi.

Judge Warren Granville imposed the gag order. As a result, lawyers said they could not discuss the evidence that prompted the shift in bond. Defense attorneys have said ballistic tests cast doubt on authorities' claims that he was behind four of the freeway shootings. The investigation into the other shootings remains open."

More from the above link / recap ( I always love to look for any new wording or phrasing!):

"The Coloradoan reports that no arrests have been made.

This comes a year after 20-year-old Cori Romero was shot near Interstate 25 and Harmony Road. Authorities say that shooting is connected to the*death of 47-year-old John Jacoby, who was fatally shot while riding his bicycle in Windsor on May 18, 2015.

Investigators have not been able to conclusively link these incidents to the*shooting death of 65-year-old William Connole, who was gunned down while walking on a sidewalk in downtown Loveland on June 3. A motorcyclist was shot at that same day near the intersection of Denver Drive and East 18th Street in Loveland, but wasn’t hurt.

Each of these shootings came amid reports of shattered windows on Interstate 25, although investigators were mum about whether these were caused by gunshots -- and in many cases ruled road debris was the culprit."

"At the last news conference, investigators asked a previous tipster to come forward, as well as offered a $50,000 reward. Last summer, investigators released photos of an orange truck believed to have been connected with the incidents, prompting a flood of tips."

Eta: This will be the "first shootings task force update in 7 months":

Transcribing the intro of the video clip from the link directly above:
"Seven months of silence on shootings and killings in Northern Colorado will finally come to an end tomorrow..."

(I'm so excited I can't stand it; however somehow I'm skeptical about if they will really tell us anything new...)

Eta:
OMG I'm about to run out of data
:scared:

TIA for everyone transcribing! Looks like I'm going to be crap out of luck on being able to watch it live! :( :banghead: :(

(*Note to self since I'm running out of data to rewatch and perhaps screenshot some footage from the video (dairy farm, etc) above in post #130; I know FHG posted some screen caps upstream from some of the other videos.)

"NoCo shooting task force to break silence Tuesday

The special task force investigating a pair of still-unsolved homicides and a spate of shootings in Northern Colorado will break its seven-month silence Tuesday during a media briefing.

It remains unclear what the Northern Colorado Shooting Task Force plans to reveal at the noon briefing at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland."

Also from the above link (recap) /BBM:

"Officials made a series of announcements about the investigation last year but details about much of the investigation have been kept under wraps.

At a Sept. 18 news conference, the task force issued a pointed, yet vague, plea for an August tipster to come forward with additional information. Investigators never publicly disclosed the contents of that tip, and it remains unclear if that person came forward after the announcement."

Snip

"The Larimer County Commission signaled earlier this month it would grant a $33,000 request to ensure the Northern Colorado Shooting Task Force's building lease can continue for at least another six months in case a federal funding request is denied. The building is in an undisclosed location. Police from Loveland, Windsor, Fort Collins, deputies from Larimer and Weld counties and the FBI, among others, have worked the case."

So many questions, again I wonder if there will really be anything new revealed, or if this will be one of those short "this is an ongoing investigation, no comment, no comment, I can not comment on that, no comment". I'm thinking they are pretty much just going to say we are still working on it and cannot tell us much due them preserving the integrity of the investigation...they will maybe bump the vehicle sketch and reward info, and mention the time extension on the Task Force building lease, etc.

Or will there be any new revelations?!!
:scared:

Per the above articles, there have been no arrests, per DM on Monday...some main things I would really like to see them touch on off the top of my head:

1. Do they have a profile of the shooter(s)?
2. Do they suspect a single or multiple perp in Jacoby's murder and CR's shooting (and WC, and shatterings if linked)?
3. Do they suspect the shots were fired from the ground or from vehicles?
4. Have they been able to link any of the shatterings to any of the killings, or to CR?
5. What information can be provided about weapons / ballistics in these cases?
6. Any insight as to why the shootings have stopped? (Knock on wood)
7. Has anything come of the vehicle sketch?
8. Have you been able to definitively link Connole's killing to JJ and CR yet?
9. Is our community still in danger?
10. Can you name all the (secret) agencies on the NoCo Task Force yet?
eta:
11. Have you been able to link any other incidents which have not been reported in the press to these cases?
12. How do you guys like our maps and spreadsheets?
13. Can I please be on your Task Force, lol....or at least just a flyyyyyy on the wall!!!

Soooooooooo many questons I can't stand it, we will see what they say, I'm going to go ahead and break down and buy more data.....

Who killed John Jacoby and William "Bill" Connole!!!?

( I just wanted to say that SugarQueen so wonderfully made a donation to John Jacoby's favorite charity 28 Hours of Hope on behalf of all of us here in this thread! Thank you SugarQueen, that really warms my heart. You are so thoughtful and awesome to have done that! :heartbeat: )

Sometimes the folks we read about here become so familiar to us that they are almost like a neighbor, friend, or family member. The NoCo shootings/ shattered windows has been so frustrating! I just wanted to be able to do SOMETHING!! This was just a small something I could do from all of us.
Kudos to everyone here for all the hard work, brainstorming, and everything I've learned here.
