Found Deceased CO - Sebastian Castro Rivas, 3, Eagle, 5 June 2020

UPDATE 7:00 pm, 6/9/20 - Sebastian Rodriguez Castro Search

The search continues for Sebastian Rodriguez Castro, who went missing from his Eagle Villas apartment the evening of Friday, June 5th. Over 500 volunteers and nearly 30 first response agencies have helped search for him over the past four days. Search teams have utilized dogs on both land and water, and have also searched by air via helicopters and drones. Efforts to find him have so far been unsuccessful.

The incident continues to be managed as Unified Command between the Eagle Police Department, Greater Eagle Fire Protection District and Vail Mountain Rescue. Today, Fire Chief Doug Cupp assumed the Incident Commander position, and will be leading the search and rescue teams over the next several operational periods.

Search teams continue to comb the river from Eagle to Hanging Lake. This short video clip shows some of the search activity from the viewpoint of one of the search UAVs (drones).

Public safety officials continue to emphasize the dangerous conditions in and around the river and discourage members of the public from conducting their own searches in those areas. Water-based search efforts should be left to our highly trained water rescue teams. If citizens were to be injured or need rescue, it would divert valuable resources away from the search.

We have searched all the areas that can be searched safely. The river is running too high to place divers or even the remote submarine into these deep pockets of water/debris

UPDATE 7:00 am, 6/10/20: Sebastian Rodriguez Castro Search

River operations continued yesterday, with Vail Mountain Rescue (VMR) and Garfield County Search and Rescue (GCSAR) crews combing the river from the Highway 6 bridge in Eagle to Hanging Lake in Glenwood Canyon. Searchers in kayaks, boats, and the GCSAR Rescue Cat (motorized boat) made multiple laps up and down the river, checking shorelines and islands. Dog teams were also utilized, as well as an Unmanned Arial Vehicle (UAV), commonly known as a drone.

Search efforts will continue today.

This is a very difficult and emotional time for the family of Sebastian and the entire Eagle County community. As we continue our search, we want to remind citizens that the river is extremely dangerous and are urging everyone to leave search efforts in this area to our highly trained water rescue teams. Thank you for your continued support and patience!

Witness stated seen at playground earlier this thread. Seems the river is close , too close for little guy out there alone. I just cannot get over witness not acting when this boy was observed alone at that time of the evening...:( MOO

I found this photo taken by a writer for The Colorado Sun. If this is Eagle Villas, it is close to the river. Dangerously close. No Fence, nothing

"Looming thunderstorm in Eagle prompts searchers to recall dozens of volunteers looking for 3yo Sebastian Castro, last seen Friday at local apt complex on river."

You mean the town allowed the developer to build that complex and didn't insist on a fence to protect children. Ridiculous.

I’m not sure how to say or ask what I want to ask. Once again, we have so little to go on. I’d like to think the clothing in the river is a red herring because at least we’d have some hope, but then the hope is either a) Sebastian is out lost somewhere or b) someone has him. . Still he’d be alive in that scenario and we could hope he’d be found safe or come home safely.

I just don’t understand how it got to this point? I mean he’s so young and it was so late in the evening for a child to be anywhere but bed. So we don’t know how he got out without being noticed, and then someone saw him alone at the playground, at 9 pm, apparently near a raging river and said and did nothing?
Do we know who saw him? Would that person have a reason to misdirect LE?

praying

Just mom and little Sebastian live in the apartment?
When was the last time he was seen IN the apartment?
Is it common for little ones to be outside playing at 9pm? Wouldn’t it be dark?
And no childproof lock so he wouldn’t go outside when you’re sleeping, bathing, cooking, running the vacuum?

This exactly. And with a cell phone. Sounds shady.

UPDATE 7:00pm, 6/10/20: Sebastian Rodriguez Castro Search

Crews continued searching the river today, focusing on high probability areas in and around the location where Sebastian was last seen. Firefighters from Greater Eagle Fire Protection District and Eagle River Fire Protection District joined Vail Mountain Rescue (VMR) to search the shoreline by foot and the river using paddles, poles and their hands to search under boulders and in debris. A VMR drone was deployed in the morning and was able to capture clear video of the river due to the dropping water levels.

Public safety officials are asking citizens not to search along the river for safety reasons. River levels are still high, and searchers are encountering a significant amount of underwater debris that is not visible from the surface. Should a member of the public become injured or need rescue, it would pull limited resources away from the search. The areas of focus are extremely high risk, so we are requesting that people leave the river search to the teams that are trained for these types of operations.

These weekend statistics from Vail Mountain Rescue Group highlight just a portion of the efforts of the team.
• Number of boats launched: 10 Saturday/12 Sunday
• Number of boat trips: 25 Saturday/26 Sunday
• Number of dogs deployed: 3 Saturday/6 Sunday

• Professional boat assistance: 12 Saturday/13 Sunday
• Professional boat personnel hours: 96 Saturday/104 Sunday
• Total personnel hours (Search & Rescue and professional combined): 396 Saturday/404 Sunday

They are giving everything to find this little one :(

Normally I am jaded, but in this case I honestly think he did escape his apartment and went missing (most likely ending up in the river). I could be wrong, but after talking with his mom before our search I believe her accounts to be genuine.

My opinion only.

Here are my thoughts.

Since it's an apartment, it probably has a certain type of doors and locks, and tenants generally are not allowed to alter them. I don't know what products exist that might allow a family to make doors inaccessible to a child without having to make any changes to the door or locks. Nor do I know how long he and mom lived in the apartment. For all I know, they just moved in last week.

I'm not about to pass judgment on a mom for letting a kid get away. Maybe she locks the doors all the time and has never had this happen. Maybe he just happened to unlock the door for the first time. Maybe she was repairing a clogged sink or had worked a long day and fell asleep on the sofa with the TV on.

As for why people aren't pointing fingers at mom, the details of the case usually dictate that. In the recent case with the two young children, the mom had lost custody and had told her father that she didn't care what happened to them. That set off alarms. In another case, a mom was caught lying and had invented a story to explain the presence of her child's blood in the home. In another case, a mom had created an elaborate, unbelievable story about two men stealing her kid after slamming into her car and demanding drugs.

There are numerous ones. Flip locks for instance can be installed higher up. Which I use. They can't reach it and won't open the door unless they are flipped open. It is also useful for preventing a door to be forced open from the outside. Especially if your kids are prone to just walk out even if they are told not to, these flips come in handy.

When I told some of my friends (the ones with kids) this missing story they all doubt the circumstances, 9.20 pm for a three year old being able to leave the house is highly worrisome. I think they leave out certain details because they are focusing on finding him. Which I understand, this is a tragedy for the family, period.
