About Shanann's scar on her neck- I found this- Shanann mentioned on Instagram that she had an "anterior cervical discectomy fusion with Arthroplasty implant",
https://www.instagram.com/p/BZAU-2vAg1t/... which means she had a cervical (neck) vertebrae fusion, which is a surgery done with the incision on the front of the neck, to fuse two vertebra together. Here is a description of the procedure-
https://www.spine-health.com/.../artificial-disc-vs.... This ACDF procedure is the reason for the scar on her neck.
I had a very similar surgical procedure done last fall as well, although without the fusion (mine was called an ADR- Artificial Disc Replacement), because I have arthritis and degenerative disc disease. I was rear-ended while 39 weeks pregnant 16 years ago, which has caused extreme issues with my back. (thankfully- my daughter who was in utero at the time of the wreck is now a happy and healthy 16 year old and was not injured by the accident)
The process of the surgery involves an incision on the front of the neck as that is an easier/safer way to access the vertebrae without disturbing the spinal cord. The fusion is done by inserting rods between two levels of the vertebrae and introducing bone to fuse the bones together (with some kind of cushion inserted where the disc had been). It is a pretty easy surgery, all around, with most people having one night in the hospital and then going home with driving restrictions for a week or so. It can be a very expensive procedure, however, depending upon insurance policies. Mine was altogether about 15k, but that was not my out of pocket expense- we paid about 500 due to a great insurance policy and meeting our out-of-pocket limit for the year.
More info than you probably wanted to know, but it was something I knew a bit about having gone thru such a similar process last fall myself. I believe Shanann's ACDF was done in late August or early September 2017.
