His reckless commission of this crime, leads me to have the opposite conclusion. Dumping the bodies at work, makes me think that this crime was more spur of the moment, and his coverup, reactionary. I think he may have thought about this in the past, but the murder of Shanann was due to an explosive argument.

If this is true, it absolves him of nothing. The way he treated their bodies, tells us all we need to know about him.
I think he believed their bodies would dissolve in that crude oil very quickly. I can’t find any information on what happens to a body when it is submerged in crude oil, but I know what happens when gasoline gets on my skin, it burns. I think C.W. was counting on fast track decomposition due to the chemicals in the oil. I think the spur of the moment decisions were made when his activities didn’t go according to plan. Ie., SW wouldn’t fit in the tank, spur of the moment Plan B, bury her, instead, had to get to work, didn’t have enough time to dig a deep grave, planned to come back later when coast was clear. As for not cleaning up house, NU destroyed that plan.

The fact that he brutally murdered three people who loved him, seemingly without remorse, tells me all I need to know about him!

I think this is a good, well thought out post. Some excellent observations and points here.

There are a couple of things that don't make sense to me though. One you kind of glossed over, is the effort and time and horror involved in strangling not one but two, innocent babies to death.

He witnessed their fear and panic. He witnessed them writhing and clawing at his hands to breathe. Whether two minutes to unconsciousness or one. That's an eternity at a moment like that. And then he had to keep strangling and strangling while their faces turned different colors, to make sure they were dead and not just unconscious.

And after he killed one, taking several minutes to do so, he went over to the next little bed and did it all over again. How could a loving father do something that gruesome, not once but twice?

So let's say he wasn't "rational". And lost it. That happens. We see case after case of unstable men and women who "lose it" and commit atrocities.

But those cases typically follow certain patterns. They usually include at least one and often more than one of the following:

1. Immediate calls to 911.
2. Immediate confessions.
3. Wailing screams and crying in the front yard or to the police operators.
4. Attempts at or actual suicides.
5. Clear mental illness such as stated delusions, catatonia, etc.
6. No calm and emotionless attempts to conceal the crime.

I never forget an episode of COPS I watched years ago - so disturbing- where a man "lost it" and kicked his wife in the chest. Emergency services came. They showed them cutting her shirt in half (but blurred her face and some of her body) and just pumping and pumping on her chest trying CPR. At the end of the program they reported she died.

The whole time he was screaming and wailing in the background. "I'm sorry! I didn't mean it!" That is a more typical reaction. They're not all like that but I've never seen one like this.

The other thing that doesn't make sense is how can a man who just "lost it" but actually loved his children and feel remorse look so dry-eyed, well rested and calm the next day as he coolly lies about their whereabouts? He was so composed and in control for a man who under your scenario didn't really mean to kill his kids and grieves for them. Didn't appear at all to have lost any sleep. No signs of crying. Or really of any emotion at all. That doesn't make a lick of sense to me.

Finally, he gave three, separate interviews. Two are almost identical. What he says is almost indistinguishable in the two interviews. IMO, clearly rehearsed.
Oh absolutely, I agree - but nothing about this makes any sense to me . I couldn’t imagine killing anyone - a spouse - and certainly not my kids - under any circumstance at all, really. I can’t really even begin to comprehend how something like this happens. But it did, and here we are.

Nor could I ever imagine anyone thinking they would ever get away with something like this... whether it was planned in advance or not.

It will be interesting to see what happens. We may never know the full story, but the pieces seem to be falling into place...

After running this by a moderator, I am posting this. I hope it’s ok. There is a live video of NU (Nicole Atkinson) tearfully explaining why she felt the need to call for the welfare check. She recorded it after receiving many nasty comments on her fb page. I can’t provide a link. It is against the rules, I hope I’ve provided enough clues.

My speculation is close to yours. I think, while SW was in NC, he fantasized about how great his life would be if SW and the girls didn't exist, but the murder wasn't in the picture yet.

When SW returned from NC and left for AZ leaving the girls with him, he began to hate the girls greatly.

Then when SW returned from AZ, he made the decision to get rid of them. He committed unprepared premeditated first degree murder, IMO.
The kids may have picked up some annoying (to him) kid behaviors at Grandma's too. They wouldn't be the first little kids to be "spoiled" by Grandma & Grandpa. They may have just not obeyed him since he wasn't around for so long. Yes I know about the week he was there, but we don't know how that went either.

That's because a) You're not evil and, b) You probably haven't followed these types of cases for long. (I'm assuming?).

Because us old timers jumped on it very quickly- "Oh he did it. He killed them."

Echoes of Neil Entwhistle, Scott Peterson, Chris Coleman, Michael Blagg, Josh Powell.

Over and over and over we've seen these wonderful fathers and husbands murder their families and give calm interviews proclaiming their innocence.

They may be people but they ain't like you or me.

I’ve been following for quite a while - off and on - just not participating. But the minute I saw his interview, I knew he was full of it.

I’ve also seen enough over the years, though - both personally and professionally - to take a step back and gather the information before drawing my own conclusions. Things are not *always* as they seem (though in this case they may be)

Could the slow down in family videos be from them physically being apart in July and August? SW in NC, CW in CO.[/QUOTE]

SW had her little girls with her, and the stay in
NC should have been a very happy time with the girls doing fun things with grandma, grandpa and the uncle. There should have been many things to capture on video and share on FB. JMO, I don't think this was a happy time for SW.

It is hard to say whether SW had confirmed an affair or affairs before she went to NC, but JMO, I don't think so. SW had told a friend or friends that CW wasn't being his normal, loving self and SW was starting to wonder if he was having an affair because of his attitude change. JMO.

SW's suspicions may have grown very serious when she got to NC. He may have been with AP and wasn't answering her calls and was slow to return calls, not calling her as frequently as normal, etc. JMO

A combination of attitude change and lack of accountability from their husband is enough to turn many wives into detectives. I tend to think SW discovered the affair or affairs when she was in NC. It appears the first any of SW's friends heard of a separation was when the beautician who worked with SW's mother mentioned it in an interview. JMO. I recall one of the very early interviews with N. In this interview, she said when she called CW when she was at the house on Monday, he started to tell her about a separation and that was the first she'd heard of that and it was out of context for what was going on at the moment, and she told him "you either will or won't work that out." Her only concern at that time was finding SW and the girls and making sure they were ok.

The one thing I've not seen mentioned is why CW went to NC for the last week. Was his trip to NC planned when SW made her plans for the trip or was it a last minute thing. Does anyone know?

I was reading a crime writer's blog that was linked here (Nick VDL, may I link it??) and there is a video clip from AB showing that there was a life insurance policy taken out by CW on Bella, the oldest child. Not saying that this was a motive but does anyone know who the beneficiary was and how much it was worth? Adding a MOO.

Are you sure that AB said that there was a policy, or was she simply speculating? I haven’t heard anything about a policy, and I think that would be big news, as that would lead to a possible motive.
Edit* I just watched the video and the life insurance is in relation to a 2015 bankruptcy document. He was earning $2400 bi-weekly and was paying $1.20 for Bella and $3.00 for life insurance on Shanann.

Hmm. Interesting. Pay attention to what your friends are saying. Pay attention to what they text you.

Maybe she did know a bit more.

Forgive my ignorance. but do you lose a life insurance policy when you file for bankruptcy? Are these LIP's worth anything to CW? Adding a MOO.

I think she was talking about the OJ case.
Oh! and Oops!
I was reading posts (so many!) backwards today.
Sometimes if there are way way too many, I only read every 3rd page. I'm so disorganized.

You cannot collect insurance without a body or until several years have passed and the person is declared dead.

One more observation: A former teacher of CW had this to say: "The guy had a photographic memory," Duty remembered. "I said, 'Chris, if I ever had a student who was going to be tremendously successful, it's you.". I'm still wondering if CW has Asperger's. MOO.
