I'm not a pharmacist. I don't know what exact effects the patches could have. But they can't be nothing and also be something. Either they're glorified, expensive band aids that do nothing (snake oil) or they have ingredients that effect a person in some way, beneficial or not.
Yes they could have adverse effects as glorified expensive band aids, like an adhesive allergy (been there).
I don't personally believe they impacted this crime in and of themselves, the business aspect perhaps, but it's disingenuous to say they're so benign to surely be fine for pregnancy and couldn't possibly adversely affect someone in a psychotropic manner but they also weren't just a scam, essentially.
I would think the defense would be remiss not to at least explore any role the ingredients could have played.
