Just playing devils advocate here - how do we know he is not mentally incompetent? Because of his previous ability to have/keep a job and live a somewhat normal life?

Also, I know the state is not required to provide a motive but I was just asking, don't most prosecutors at least TRY to have one explained to them by the defendant BEFORE they take the death penalty off of the table? Kind of like, 'we will spare your life but first you need to tell us what really happened?'
The prosecutor said in the hearing that (paraphrasing) he would never tell the truth anyway, so pointless.

I suppose we don't know if he's mentally incompetent, but I believe his defense attorneys did their job and they know if he's mentally incompetent, which is what's important to his criminal case.

He knew it was wrong because he hid the bodies and set up false narratives. He maintained logical conversation, lying about certain details.

I don't know the definition of mental incompetence but those are pretty good examples of someone knowing exactly what they are doing.

The parents’ attitudes are unbelievable to me. My son has two kids with a woman who is really not mentally well, and was violent and abusive to him. She is scary and has the felony record to prove it (kids, run a background check when you first get involved with someone new!). My son never retaliated to her physical abuse because, as he said. He didn’t want to go to jail. He got out legally. Rambling to make this point: if at some time he had snapped and harmed her, I would have kind of understood but never condoned it. And let’s say he was a psycho and killed her and the kids, and conned me into thinking she had killed their kids - I would never have forgiven him for disposing of the bodies in any way at all, and not notifying authorities. CW’s story makes no sense, of course, but let’s just say it did happen that way; what a weaselly thing to do. How would a grandparent ever forgive it?? Let alone try to stop him from taking some kind of responsibility. No wonder he turned out to be a cowardly little 🤬🤬🤬.

Sorry, that probably made no sense. I just can’t get over the nonchalance about his having killed Shan’ann and about their belief that “all” he did was shove the girls into oil tanks.

BBM - he doesn't - he goes on to say, he still doesn't understand it.
So CW tells him he put them in crude oil just so they wouldn't be with SW and Dad said what? No further questions? O.M.G.
Everyone else understands the real reason he hid them there, but Dad still can't figure it out?

With a psych evaluation, could CW act more 'disturbed' than he is, to benefit his case.o_Oo_O
He has been acting for years, and we all witnessed this in CW's interviews.
He may try to fool those testing him, and act quite 'crazy', perhaps more than he is.
MOO.
They have inbuilt checks within the tests to test for malingering.

  • #968
Holy Moly, and they thought that those innocent vids of Shanann's meant she was capable of murdering her children?
They should look to their own interviews and nasty words.
Makes me wonder if they were posting here when we were allowed to discuss CW’s allegations... were they the ones who got the ball rolling against Shan’ann?

1. If he is not the attorney, how can he be receiving transcripts or autopsies that are not yet public?
2. Can he become CW attorney at this late date?
3. How likely is it that CW will withdraw his plea?
Pursuant to the Colorado Open Records Act (CORA), any individual can request copy of the autopsy report from the custodian (Coroner). However, the reports for Watts remain under seal until after sentencing. Anybody can also request trial transcripts by submitting the request form at link.

Cindy Watts statement of people not knowing the full story, is hollow.
It is she who doesn't know the full story, because her son has not spoken to her since he was arrested and she has had no engagement in the case and does not know any of the evidence they have.
It's interesting. About 2 years ago I left an abusive marriage. I'm not perfect, but I'm a basically honest and decent and kind person, and I did my best to make the marriage work despite being mistreated. After I finally left, my ex-husband launched a campaign of stalking, harassment, menacing, threats and property destruction against me. I successfully petitioned for a Civil Protection Order, which he violated within 24 hours by sending me threats, at which point they gave me a Criminal Protection Order. He was charged with 5 counts of various crimes against me, all with DV enhancers. During this time, my behavior was impeccable. I did not so much as say an angry word to defend myself. People said I had the "restraint of a saint" but in truth I was just terrified and exhausted. We had been married for a long time and friends before that, so we had lots of mutual friends and family. Occasionally one of these people would reach out to my former mother-in-law and brother-in-law and beg them to step in and try to convince my ex to stop his reign of terror against me, if not my sake for our kids. Every single time, instead of listening to these mutual friends and maybe realizing their family member's criminal behavior was a problem, they would say the EXACT SAME THING as CW's mom: "Well, you just don't know the whole story. There are things you don't know. She's not perfect either." There was no defense for my ex's criminal behavior, and they weren't willing to hold him (or themselves) accountable, and I hadn't done anything to "deserve" that level or retaliation, so all they had was vague insinuations that there were horrible things about me that people just didn't know. It's amazing to me how alike these generationally abusive families are.

Yep, yep.

1) CW couldn't use the "SW did it" story because the evidence was overwhelming.
2) The psych evaluation(s) did not deem him incompetent to stand trial.

"Monday evening, the parents of Chris Watts gave an interview in which they attempted to defend their son. In doing so, they felt the need to make vicious, grotesque and utterly false statements about Shanann. Their false statements, however hurtful and inaccurate, will never alter the truth about Shanann, and will never alter the truth about the crimes committed by their son, Chris Watts." (Shanann's parents' statement, from the Fox31 article)

Every once in a while, you hear about a really great person having been raised by terrible parents or a complete sociopath who's parents were decent people and truly did their best. CLEARLY, that is not the case here. CW's mother is, without question, a controlling narcissist and exactly the type of person who would naturally raise a family annihilator. Her comments are beyond irrational and disgusting. Did she even express regret about her beautiful grandchildren? Or just herself and her precious boy whom she she sees as an extension of herself? Shanann's parents, on the other hand, have been so strong, classy and gracious. Everything about this case is just heartbreaking. The Watts family has destroyed so many beautiful lives.

Thanks for your great comments Lore Listener.:):)
After this outburst by CW's parents going public, they will have time to reflect.
I hope they read these articles, and perhaps close friends speak to them, about their attitude as portrayed to SW's family and to the world.
Perhaps there will be an apology by CW's parents quite soon.
MOO.

“Public records will be unsealed after the sentencing, and Rourke said he will give additional details.”

"The plea of guilty to each of those counts, naming each of those victims — Shanann, Bella, Celeste and Nico (their unborn son) — was an important consideration," Rourke said. "He deserves a life sentence for each and every act on top of one another."
Colorado dad pleads guilty to murder of pregnant wife, 2 daughters

For me it helps to keep this in mind, only a few days until a whole lot more will be revealed.

IMO the release of further information in relation to the case that supports CW's guilt will help them to accept his guilt. I fully expect the DA to be part of this.

I would think if he was mentally incompetent and his lawyers knew it they would use have used it in his defense/plea in some way

I don't think that they ever will. They will interpret the information differently or still come up with some excuse that it was her fault.

Well I definitely heard the one about not putting Shan'ann with the girls because she didn't deserve to be with them....I heard this somewhere through SM but now I see it coming out of the father's mouth, in his "1st interview".

I'm so sorry for the pain this must be causing you. Please believe that the tremendous support of Shanann here on WS, must also exist elsewhere with many, many others, because she was such a bright and good person and soul. Great friends like you are a testament to that brightness and goodness. Don't let small, inconsequential, selfish people get you down. Let them wallow in their own pigsty, that they helped create. We're here for you, hang in there.
Thank you. It's easy to lose sight of that when every news channel has his family telling their side without any retort. And people are just eating it up. It's depressing. I just hope it will be over soon and justice will prevail despite the background noise.
