Watts family murders: Chris Watts scheduled to be sentenced Monday

The sentencing hearing is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Monday. Denver7 will stream the full hearing live on TheDenverChannel.com, on Facebook, Twitter and on TV streaming devices.

19th Judicial District Attorney Michael Rourke could also speak following the hearing and it’s possible that the autopsy reports for Shanann, Bella and Celeste could be released in the hours or days that follow.

On Thursday, a judge granted Watts’ parents or a designee the right to speak at the hearing. Chris Watts' father is expected to be in court for sentencing Monday.

Shanann’s parents could also deliver victim impact statements in which they could ask the judge for a more-lenient or stronger sentence for Watts.

Not a complete transcription, but here are some comments about CW's interrogation, his Dad, and the airport from Mom's interview:

At the 8:15 mark:
CW picked his Dad up at the airport and they drove to the police station.

"And Chris still didn't say anything to him. Nothing. He had already been interrogated seven hours...and he was going in for another interrogation."

"The next thing, after five hours, they called Ronnie and said, your son wants to talk to you before he tells us anything."

Beginning 9:05:
"So, he was going back to the airport when his public defender called him and told him to come back."

"So, that's when Ronnie met his public defender. And, so, talked to her for a while and uh, they kept in touch with us and let us know what's going on."

"The next update I got was Ronnie called Jamie and told them they found their bodies."
Extended Interview: Cindy Watts, ChriSo the publuc defenf Watts' mother, questions son's plea deal

So the Public defender was in there with him when he was being questioned? Or is this right after he was arrested ?

Did they question him on just that day? Maybe they interviewed him the day before? She makes it sound like they interrogated him for seven hours and then another five on the same day.

Haaaaaa. 4AM?! Now that’s some dedication!

This is the only case on here that I’ve ever been able to follow to a conclusion.

Instead of having a trial in order to answer some of the numerous questions we have, we should get those answers over the course of a few hours.

That’s incredibly rare. I wouldn’t miss this for the world.

In thread #52 someone asked about SW leaving for 6 weeks and CW having a hard time with it. NK stated they dated about 2 months, before the murders. So 6 weeks, SW comes home a few days then leaves again for last trip for a few days. Seems to me CW had no reason to "miss" or want SW to stay home. IIRC the timeline shows he was already involved with NK.

Just spotted they only mention his father as being expected to be there tomorrow, not Mother Watts.

It's amazing, the VI said the exact same thing in reference to Shanann.
That's right! She said their first thought was, what has she done now?

I thought she was there with the kids for four weeks and CW joined them for the last week. Have I had that wrong all this time?
Edited to add, I agree, I don't think missing his wife was a problem for him at that point.

Where is it reported that Ronnie Watts has(d) a career in law enforcement? If it is the case, I can imagine that has had an impact on Ronnie and Cindy Watts' and CW's reaction to the crimes, their perceived station in their community, how his crimes reflect on their sense of worthiness. Perhaps this is an additional layer convoluting their public statements which seem so distanced from pain and grief for the lives lost.

IMO! Also, I personally wouldn't judge them for his crimes, but I can understand how they would worry that some in their local community especially might.

I heard speculation that Ronnie may have been in LE or Law. But I found no evidence of that. Everything I saw showed that he had a long career in Automotive Parts business. 30 years or so,IIRC.

@Thepoet asked me last thread what the impact of victim impact statements have on sentencing.

IMO, the only impact they usually have when there's a plea deal is in the comments the court makes when handing down the sentence.

In other news, I might not be here during sentencing. I do have a brief hearing in the a.m.

Any bets on what the Watts parents will say I think their victim impact statements?

My predication at this point is they will talk about their own suffering as victims losing their grandkids. They are aware of all the comments put there I think and will try to redeem themselves by mentioning special things about Bella and CeCe and how much they love them.

They will talk mostly about how shocking this is. How their son has always been a good, decent person who dearly loved and provided for his children. They will talk about what a good family they have, or allude to it - "We are average people who love our kids, close family. There's never been a hint of trouble."

They will talk about how much they love CW and always will and maybe how they have to accept the plea but will never understand and because this isn't the son they know. So while they accept he has pled guilty they will always have questions and maybe even that they can't accept that he actually did what he pled to.

I have a feeling they won't mention Shanann much. They MIGHT say something kind about her family and their suffering. Like they pray for them and feel for them.

Because they've been advised I don't think they will cause a scene or blame Shanann. Not outright. But I have a feeling the implication that she's at fault or triggered the murders will be there but not implicitly said.

What do you all think?

I think this was after arrest as Ronnie Watts was driving back to the airport.

Very nice. I hope it goes like that. If not, I hope they mute her microphone.

Good catch. I didn't notice that. It's going to be an ordeal for everyone. Whatever faults his parents have, they didn't deserve this. What devastation this man has caused.

I hope that that is true.

Seattle1 reposted this on the last thread on page 47, post 934:

"I believe SW family statement says it best.

Their statement reads:

“Shanann Watts was a faithful wife, and the most gentle and loving mother in the world to her children Bella, Celeste, and Nico. She was also the best daughter any parent could ever hope for. Shanann was a wonderful soul.

Everyone who knew Shanann knows this to be true. Even Chris Watts knows this to be true. Yet Chris Watts still chose to murder Shanann, Bella, Celeste, and Nico. Chris Watts still chose to dump the bodies of his own family in oil tanks. And Chris Watts still chose to lie about it until he could lie no more. He pled (sic) guilty to murdering his family because he is guilty. BBM

Monday evening, the parents of Chris Watts gave an interview in which they attempted to defend their son. In doing so, they felt the need to make vicious, grotesque and utterly false statements about Shanann. Their false statements, however hurtful and inaccurate, will never alter the truth about Shanann, and will never alter the truth about the crimes committed by their son, Chris Watts.

Shanann’s memory and reputation deserves to be protected. And her family is fully prepared to do so.”
