Here is the revised list of questions. I've added back the question about the garage keypad because I couldn't find the answer to that after listening to the press conference again. If anyone can point me to where it was mentioned, I'd appreciate it.

I've tried to group the additions in with similar questions that were already on the list, so if your question has been added, it's not necessarily at the bottom of the list.

QUESTIONS WE HAVE ABOUT THE WATTS MURDERS
  1. What was the significance of the non-porous bag and the footprint?
  2. What was CW doing on the Saturday night before the murders? Did he use a babysitter?
  3. What did CW do with Shanann's engagement and wedding rings?
  4. What did the dogs alert on?
  5. We all heard a dog barking while at least one of the infamous 'porch' interviews took place, was it ever confirmed that the barking we all heard was a LE dog and not Dieter, the daschund?
  6. Will they ever release the police interview with Chris?
  7. What was underneath the blacked out areas in the arrest affidavit?
  8. The affidavit states that CW “ultimately” strangled SW – did he describe a big fight, inconsistent with the autopsy results?
  9. Did Chris Watts know the neighbors had cameras?
  10. Was the garage keypad really broken as CW told police?
  11. What is the history about that doll photo on her FB?
  12. NK "deleted" texts & FB posts before contacting LE. Do we know if LE recovered them?
  13. How did Shanann's phone get in the sofa?
  14. What was the content of the texts CW sent in the days leading up to the murders? Will they be made public?
  15. What was the content of his texts and any voicemail to SW after the murders?
  16. Bella was received at autopsy wrapped in a bedsheet "from retrieval process." Was this one of the Watts' bed sheets and was she found with it?
  17. What was the exact day/time CW called 1) the school to "un-enroll" the girls and, 2) the realtor about selling the house?
  18. Did the Watts have a home phone?
  19. Did SW mention to anyone (family/friends) that a separation or divorce was being discussed? Did NUA know what SW meant when she indicated she would need her friendship more than ever?
  20. Did Shanann ask to talk to the girls on Sunday night and if so, did CW deny this?
  21. When did CW find out about baby Nico's gender and what was his reaction that the DA alluded to?
  22. A reporter asked Rourke if he thought the pregnancy had contributed to CW's actions. Rourke said, "The reaction of the defendant when he found out was something less than what you would expect a normal and reasonable father to display when he found out that he was about to have a son." The DA looked and sounded like he was referring to something specific. Is this coming from texts they read between SW and CW? Something SW told family or friends?
  23. Why didn't SW, Bella, and CeCe have on pants? Was it to enable getting them down the oil-tank hatch more easily? If so, why then would SW not have on pants?
MOO
Good questions, I hope someday this information will be released. As for the non porous plastic bag, I have a feeling it could have been placed over one of their heads. I think someone else suggested he may have used a plastic bag over their heads to smother them, I think this may be right IMO.

I didn't see the same thing in court others are seeing. I think talk of CW crying, being in fear, feeling shame are all attempts to humanize him. I get why people want to. It's so hard to imagine there are people out there, capable of these types of crimes.

But, CW is not human. He's some sort of subspecies.

This is a man that, one by one, killed his family in a manner that was up close and slow. Then he carried their lifeless bodies to his truck like he was making a dump run. Drove all the way to work with a truck bed full of corpses like it was nothing. Dumped his wife and unborn child in a shallow grave. Making sure they didn't even get to be together in death he carried tiny bodies to two separate tanks and then shoved them in tiny holes, scraping their skin and leaving clumps of hair along the edges.

Then he went off to work where it was reported he was behaving normally. Made a few phone calls to unenroll his kids and sell their family home - a place filled with memories of his family. A place they should have felt most safe. Gave cool as cucumber interviews where he laughingly showed off his favorite tshirt . Casually dropped hints to his friends he and SW were thinking of selling their house.

These are not the actions of a man capable of feeling any shame or empathy. He doesn't even feel fear the same way you and I and I do. I imagine he has a lot of anger and envy, but Chris Watts only cares about Chris Watts. Any emotions shown in court were 100% self serving.

Even DA Rourke said throughout the entire duration of the investigation CW never showed an ounce of remorse and will likely never tell the truth.

Not only will he never tell, but I'll bet he'll keep taking digs at the Rzucek family in the years to come. Like SP enjoys popping up every couple of years to proclaim his innocence and desire to find Laci and Connor's "real" killer, we'll probably hear from CW from time to time how SW really killed those babies or some other form of blame.

Moo

I mostly agree. I think he's human but very defective.

I don't think he feels fear like a normal person does. I don't think he was shaking one bit. Not at all.

I think he couldn't stand to sit there and listen to these things being said about him. I think he couldn't stand to be unmasked in front of everyone.

I do believe that these annihilators feel some sense of shame or panic. But not for normal reasons.

He's not driven by fear of prison or being harmed, really. He's not capable of remorse. But I think he is capable of a sort of shame. And narcissistic panic that his true self will be revealed.

And it was. And he couldn't take that. IMO.

It was all narcissism on display. Not worry about how he will fare in prison.

I still remember the description of scott Peterson on his way to death row. He was acting differently than normal. He was asked how he felt. He said he felt "jazzed." "Jazzed"? Wth!!!

No. This dude has spent a lifetime, I believe, having his identity subsumed and having to maintain a carefully crafted mask of a good guy. A sweet and almost neutered son who was such a good mama's boy he didn't even date. He then became a wonderful husband and provider and a devoted and loving daddy.

But this not being who he really was, there's always the pull between maintaining the facade and giving in to his deeper instincts and desires.

Like all annihilators who don't kill themselves, he wanted to figure out how to do both - how to indulge the desires of his secret, internal self while maintaining the carefully constructed facade.

There was no way under the circumstances without making his family disappear.

Anyone who can carefully smother to death and strangle his loved ones and then callously and calmly dispose of their bodies, has no fear and no empathy.

He is indeed a monster. Human but inhumane. Defective.

I agree. I don't want to get into any suppositions about NK as per the rules here, and because she is a collateral victim of CW herself, but in discussing the DA -- that and his statement that she was mostly not completely cooperative (paraphrasing) would lead one to believe that he did not think too highly of her. Also the way he would say CW's "girlfriend" with a spin on that word -- I think the DA is a highly moral man with integrity and the fact that NK wiped her texts did not go over so well with him. MOO.

I got that feeling from the DA as well but I guess it's highly interpretive based on differing worldviews.

I think the DA did backtrack on something he'd said earlier, and that was that the plea deal was the first attempt made by the defense to settle (incorrect terminology I know). I'm absolutely certain that there was a rejected plea before the full guilty pleas, because I remember wondering if the first plea was insanity.
I thought it was probably more along the lines of pleading to lesser charges, that might allow for an eventual possibility for parole. The totality of his actions, including his attempted cover-up, don't indicate that he has any mental defect that would meet the legal definition of insanity. im0

I had this thought right after that interview first aired. Or at the very least, reporters had some behind-the-scenes info.
Me too. Asking him about his tshirt seemed intentional and worked like a charm.

Remember there was also a plea referred to, that perhaps had been the first plea, to cop to something like nolo contendre but they used a different term.

IE no contest started with "a".... alford?

Holy ****! I totally had a dream I went and got Shannan's leftovers in their fridge so they wouldn't go to waste... Maybe I'm too obsessed with this case.
I also can't stop thinking of him out back grilling hours before those sweet girls took their last breaths.

That's a good possibility too, considering he still doesn't appear to want to take responsibility for what he did by telling what happened.

Quite, any insanity defense would have been rejected before it even saw the light of day.

Ah, thank you very much for setting me straight, @gitana1.

So he could, in theory, appeal at anytime in the future? And are there specific conditions to the grounds on which he could appeal?

Yes. And he will fail. To appeal a plea and sentence after plea is exceedingly difficult. And they made sure he was fully informed of everything, knew what he was doing and was making the decision kwowingly and voluntarily.

This case is truly over.

Yes Alford Plea. Well done Nuttmegg :D

Great list. Thought of another. Did Andarko fire him before or after he was arrested, and if before, why was he terminated?

I think the possibility of an Alford Plea came from the pod people. The reason I remember it that way was because someone spelled it "Alfred." LOL! It was never mentioned by the District Attorney from what I recall. MOO

That reporter is a genius. So many times you see where they miss cues, or opportunities to ask really good questions. On the face of it, 'tell us about your shirt' doesn't seem like a great question, but man oh man was it brilliant in what it revealed. His face lit up like... like he was talking about something he loved. :(

Yeah, his mom's representative in court said he still hadn't had an "opportunity" to fully confess. 3 months isn't enough? Isn't enough after hearing that Bella bit her tongue repeatedly and that the fetus was actually expelled from SW's body? When is this "opportunity" going to be afforded poor CW who just can't wait to explain it all. Sad.

I think it came from gitana1. On the first Websleuths podcast.

I interpreted that bit of word salad was communicating that the Watts are looking for him to tell them exactly what happened, because before the plea was entered counsel did not what him talking about case specifics to his parents. imo

  • #219
I think that's the only way we can interpret it. I wish his answer would have been more definitive. MOO
Because I am so inquisitive and looking for more reasons to despise CW, I want to know, but I have to admit I respect and admire the DA for not dragging any more people into this gruesome mess than are absolutely necessary.

Yes, I remember it being discussed here and on the podcast. I may have misunderstood the OP - I thought it was being suggested that the first plea deal presented by the defense was an Alford Plea. If so, I don't think that's correct, but that's JMO.
