Barry's not as stupid as he sounds. I'm pretty sure he does it on purpose, he probably thinks it's disarming. He's a moron compared to Grusing, but not the dumb redneck he wants LE to think he is.
I think he's too arrogant and too obsessed with his image to feign stupidity, and you don't just see it in regards to speech, but also in the way his mind operates as well.

No one is that good an actor.

I don't mean to imply that he's mentally challenged or anything, as Barry did build a successful business, and knows exactly how to manipulate and control people.

So there is that I guess.

My spellchecker takes issue with Barry's inability to pronounce the G on a present participle.

A sampling of Barry's redneck speak AA quotes.

“... everybody jumped on, beatin’ the freakin’ crap out of me.”
“They had already crossed. They were in the road when I stopped in the road before I got to fifty, they were in the road, crossing, and then they cross the road, and by the time I get up there, they’re already crossin’ the mountain. I mean, I don’t stop on fifty, I keep going. I’m just watchin’ to see where they’re going. I get to Garfield, turn around, go right to 285.”
“I know that you took my bed sheets. I know, I didn’t even know until after the fact that — sheets were off her bed upstairs. I mean, what a coincidence. Her sheets are off her bed and then all of the sudden, it’s like, ‘That’s where he did it. And the sheets are gone. He washed ’em. Blah, blah, blah.’ I had no idea they were off. Suzanne was obviously washin’ the sheets because REDACTED was with Suzanne68 and REDACTED and they were gonna stay there that night and Suzanne’s takin’ sheets off, and washin’, gettin’ things ready.”
“I’m tellin’ you, I’m telllin’ you right now I’ve shot two deer with my tranq gun, ’cause I used to raise deer, and I collect horns, and I’ll tell you exactly what I did.”
“I’m just tellin’ you right now, I’m a redneck. And, I’m, the first thing I thought of when I came here and saw deer in my yard with big horns, I’m like, ‘I’m getting’ them horns.’ Not gonna kill it. Not gonna poach it. But I guarantee if DNR knew I did that, they’d slap my wrist pretty hard.”
“Because it looks like if I did something and ripped the sheet and got blood on them and ripped ’em off and washed ’em- to me, lookin’ at it through a detective’s eyes, that would look a little suspicious.”
“Yeah, and, urn, even the outside cameras, she thought that, ‘Oh you’re watchin’, or your girlfriend is watchin’ you on the outside cameras.’ I said, ‘Honey, the outside cameras don’t even work.’ And, but she was just certain that if like, I was outside with her and doing something in the yard, she would say, ‘I know she’s watchin’ you.’ Just stupid stuff, and I’m like, that’s why these, the only reason that these fights happen is because she’s accusin’ me. And I never understood them until now; she’s accusing me because she wants to justify her relationship.”

He turns it on and off, maybe he thinks it makes him sound folksy, but I think he lays it on thick for investigators and cameras.

Voting by Mail?
We just can't help ourselves. Politics and personal opinions need seperation here in my opinion.
@PaulaDC I apologize to you and any sleuthers who read "politics" into my earlier post,* excerpted below.

A poster asked another poster who had described mail-in voting, whether the mail-in ballots were in this country. My post provided factual info--- that the mail-in voting procedure under discussion was in Colorado, part of the USA.
If referencing California and providing link to state library about CA.'s many attempts to secede from the union since 1850 caused offense, again I'm sorry. Did not realize it would be seen as "politics and personal opinion" and did not intend to be. my2cts.

---------------------------------------------
Quoting from my earlier post, sbm bbm:
@genuineusa77 Colorado is still in part of the US, and afaik ;)no current threats to secede from the union.
Unlike some other states, say, California,* for ex.
{{{.... @Seattle1 (Thank you ...) posted CO voting law info...}}

Interesting, MOO he is copying a more NW Kentucky accent than his native upper midwest eastern Indiana accent to appear more redneck.
I wonder if he did that in Indiana too, or just used it in CO.

PP Floor Plan. Avail. at Chaffee Co Ofc?
I'm reasonably certain that if someone had the time to dedicate to the search, the floor plan for the PP house could be found on a Colorado architect/house plans website. It would be a long, probably incredibly repetitive search, though. Home plans websites tend to have a LOT of crossover and I just don't have the time or attention (literally, ADHD) to dedicate to that.
@sk716 bbm Oh my, ferreting out the floor plan from those websites would likely take a looong time.

For the floor plan, here's what first came to my mind:
Per Chaffee Co. website, a floor plan must be submitted to Chaffee Co.* office below w application for building permit.* As PP home was built in approx'ly 2008,** seems floor plan may be avail online thru bldg dept's permit ofc, but I can't find it. Anyone??? Thx in adv.

If someone can obtain it, either hard or digital copy, and either provide it to @sk716 or create image yourself for W/S, I'd reimburse (say, up to $50 USD thru Paypal).

Thanks again @sk716 for your excellent image w phone movements, arrows, and timeline, etc. I know it took extraordinary effort. my2ct

Barry: “Well, I’ll tell you right now we had sex that night and she was naked when I went to sleep. So, she obviously got up and put her pajamas on and when I left in th-, the next morning she was laying right there in bed. I didn’t pull up the covers and look what she was wearing, if that’s what you’re asking me?”(Page 59 of 129)

As a Redneck, he seems to love his cowboy boots. Maybe, his feet would look better in ballsports shoes, if I look at his strange gait. Looks like he is dribbling a ball, toes always inward. Can't not see it.

Lol, that's why it made it hard to make my point.

You have Barry, who speaks and thinks on a very low level. It's like he's this "meathead jock," Hollywood tv/movie character:

"...cause I never seen it on her phone."

"...went to the job site and seen it."

"...because I fired her and don't let her work for me anymore."

Then you have Grusing, who is measured, articulate, and incredibly savvy and smart.

Barry was playing Connect 4 against a chess master.

I thought BM said a white string shirt last time he saw her. In bed of course, snoring? But he didn't see her in bed, just heard her so when did she wear a white string shirt. Am I confused? Feel free to correct me.
Seems BM couldn't decide which lie sounded better so he kept throwing more out there: she was naked in bed, or she was wearing a white string shirt, or she was just a snoring lump in the bed. Take your pick.

While I cannot prove it, I do suspect Barry wears cowboy boots to add height to his reportedly 5'10" frame.

  • Added height. Shorter men have extra reason to love cowboy boots — the heel adds anywhere from a half-inch to nearly two inches of height. Taller men will definitely want a lower-slung “walking heel” style, but particularly short men can sneak another inch or so in by wearing full “cowboy heels.”

I was searching the affidavit for something else, and came upon this. What a complete sleezeball.

...During these recordings, Barry told Holly words to the effect, "you are Suzanne to me," he held her hand while in the car, gave her a kiss good night, told her Suzanne would approve of whatever would happen in their relationship, and twice touched Holly's breasts, pretending like the touches were accidents when her husband's head was turned away or not looking.

There's a kind of man who talks this way with other men as well. It's part of macho culture.

What did he try to say, but did change, I wonder ......

Yes, I was noticing that as well.

He was probably going to say "night", but "the next morning" is much worse - as he should have just said morning if he was recalling from experiential memory.

The problem was he didn't have memory of waking up early that morning as it was all the same day for him - never having gone to bed, so he had to figure out when he left. Hence "next"

Big blunder IMO

I wonder how that might play out with the jury. I'm a mathematician, so I'll simplify my thoughts in math speak. Some jurors might think "poor grammar = stupid" and "articulate = smart", but then a different set of jurors might think "poor grammar = my kind of guy" and "articulate = slick, untrustworthy".

In you were the defense, what type of juror would you look for? Also, since this is the first true crime story I have followed, does the prosecution plan their presentation based on the type of jury they believe will be selected? How much time is there between jury selection and the actual trial?

  • #918
I doubt that Barry even “got” the nuance of Grusing’s comment. He probably just heard that he would not be convicted. And Grusing wasn’t lying.

  • #919
He changed it a couple of times. It's what he does.

Barry stated he awoke to his alarm at 4:30AM. Barry explained that when he awoke, Suzanne was still asleep in the master bed. Barry stated he heard her snoring. Barry said he showered and left the house at about 5:00AM. Barry stated he last saw Suzanne wearing short white shorts and a white string-type shirt. (Page 20 of 129)
...
Barry added that Suzanne was naked the last time he saw her, so he did not know what she was last wearing. (Page 25 of 129)
...
Holly said that Barry could never describe what his last image of Suzanne was to her.

Barry: “Well, I’ll tell you right now we had sex that night and she was naked when I went to sleep. So, she obviously got up and put her pajamas on and when I left in th-, the next morning she was laying right there in bed. I didn’t pull up the covers and look what she was wearing, if that’s what you’re asking me?”(Page 59 of 129)

bbm
What did he try to say, but did change, I wonder ......

There you go!

I think he was about to say, when he left in the night...
Because there was no daybreak for him. It was the continuation of his nighttime events.
He apparently never thought to build any believability into his narrative.

Did set an alarm, didn't. Slept all night. Didn't. You know, prostate. Left in the -- . Left the next day.

That was a trip up.

'I left in the morning', more natural... but his brain IMO already committed to the nnnnn of 'the night' so his tongue turned left and went with the nnnnnnext morning.

And IMO that proves that his brain was two steps ahead.

He was trying to fill in blanks.

Which is what lying is.

In addition to the trajectory of movement...the defense pointed out the speed of the movement. I think both would need to be considered in an analysis. I know when I am looking at the Find My Phone/Friend on my iphone generally if the person is driving and in good cell phone service area the movement is smooth and at a pace consistent with the mph of the vehicle or it shows a static location and approximate if not totally accurate address. If the phone is in a very weak reception areas it will bounce around really fast and finally settle on a location sometimes less accurate. We are probably 15 miles north and 15 south from towers and 25 miles east and 50 miles west of towers with obstructions in all but the west. I have to believe that data retrieved other than directly from the phone in theory should be more accurate but when this rapid movement and speed were brought up at the preliminary I was like OK....I want to understand this better since I had observed it in phone apps. This is largely contributing to my unwillingness to settle on the conclusion that he was racing around at top speed chasing Suzanne. There may have been movement and I would guess yes he came home, and was on the move in or around the house as we all do sometimes around our homes, but it may not have been the movement captured in the data. Data forensics has gotten very interesting but it can also lead to false assumptions in other than expert hands is my guess.
