IMO, regarding the $70,000, assuming it really existed (and I think it did), if SM took it, she had the combo to the safe. And cash is fungible.
I expect it would be almost impossible to prove it belonged to one or the other of them and I doubt BM wanted Forensics going through his books. (Though I’m sure they did.)
Let’s face it, there’s an excellent chance it’s all under-the-table job money. But in the form of cash it was simply a family asset — it could represent BM’s cash jobs or a part of SM’s inheritance, or 30 years of saving spare change. Again, it’s fungible. (Unless that safe was a business-only safe and BM was in the gun business. Just sayin’…)
And that said, the missing money and missing charger could still be a part of BM’s attempt to muddy the waters about what happened to SM. Bonus, he could claim it as a loss on taxes and maybe try to make a little extra off it at the same time.
