I don't see a scenario where a bicyclist is confronted by someone to the point of losing a shoe and then rides his bike into the wilderness on a rugged trail as a getaway rather than toward the relative safety of the neighborhood and using the paved roads. It makes no sense, it is not reasonable, it is not how a panicked person reacts.

Therefore, I think he was shot while riding the trail, the killer was already there and ambushed him from not far away, he ditched the bike to run through the woods, lost a shoe as he ran, collapsed in the wooded area and was shot again while down and semi-buried on the spot. The shoe and the bike were moved because they were too exposed and would be discovered too quickly. They were both tossed aside as the killer left the area, likely going back to the car parking area near the trail head at Mt. Herman. I think the shoe got tossed out of the window as the perp headed to Red Rock Ranch Rd.
