Colorado coronavirus latest, April 21: 34 Colorado healthcare workers sent to N.J. to help with COVID-19 response

Centura Health sending local health care workers to help areas hit hard by COVID

Thirty-four caregivers with Centura Health boarded a flight from Denver International Airport (DIA) to New Jersey on Tuesday to help three communities hit hard by COVID-19. The caregivers were assembled from multiple Colorado-based Centura facilities. The three facilities they will help out at are:

  • Trinitas Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth, New Jersey
  • St. Joseph's Health, Patterson and Wayne campuses, New Jersey
  • Saint Peter's Healthcare System in New Brunswick, New Jersey.
The New Jersey region is currently in great need for experienced caregivers to serve temporarily on the frontlines during the pandemic as more than 85,000 positive cases and nearly 7,000 hospitalizations have been reported across the state.

Gyms will not reopen on April 27, Polis’ office says

“On Tuesday, Polis’ office said gyms will also remain closed. His office sent the following statement to FOX31 and Channel 2:

“Bars, restaurants, and gyms have a higher risk of transmission occurring in those settings. Currently, gyms will not be reopening on April 27. We are considering allowing personal trainers in one on one settings and will look forward to engaging the industry on how they can reopen safely in the weeks and months.””

“Though the number of positive cases appears to be leveling out, county health officials are expecting to see a spike after the stay-at-home order is lifted this Sunday and businesses begin slowly reopening.

Katie O’Donnell, spokeswoman for the county health department, expects to see the number of cases rise within a week to 10 days of people returning to work and businesses reopening.”

Anybody else notice how CO COVID site stopped posting daily numbers and switched to cumulative numbers. It automatically looks like curves are flattening because every day the cumulative base is higher thus new deaths account for a smaller percentage even if they are still going up slightly. Polis is hell-bent on being the first Gov to lift stay at home restrictions and also voted least likely (IMO) to enforce wearing masks. I am scared to death that when this is all over CO will have one of the highest per capita death rates in the country.

I just hope if (when) cases spike again here he’ll reinstate a stay at home order. But he won’t in my opinion because that might mean he made a mistake.

According to the papers there has been over 500 cases of COVID-19 here in Eagle County but according to the Colorado Covid website we have been stuck on 489 for awhile.

Denver is extending the Stay-at-Home Order to May 8.

It hasn't been confirmed but I heard that the Tri-County Health Council (covers Arapahoe, Douglas and Adams counties) will also be extending to May 8th, despite the Mayor of Aurora wanting to lift the ban. Tri-County Health trunps local Mayors, but either way a formal announcement probably won't be made until the weekend. Same thing w/Jefferson County. Meanwhile, Weld county has thrown up their hands because they think the Governors list of what can and can't be open makes no sense and announced that everything will open back up on 4/27. These 5 counties are all within 30 minutes of each other. Hundreds of thousands of people live in one county but work in another. So while people in Weld County are expected to show up at work, if they live elsewhere they're guilty of a $999 misdemeanor if stopped before crossing the county line.

And the small suburb of Wheat Ridge (bless their hearts) has instituted a mandatory face mask ordinance when half the people outside their city limits aren't wearing them at all. And about half of those that do for some reason don't cover their noses. I can't decide if Wheat Ridge cases will be meaningfully reduced or not. Do you think it will help or is it futile if they're the only ones?

I am not sure if this is a correct count or not because this is by far the highest single day count Colorado has seen since the pandemic began. I will keep an eye on it and edit if necessary.

*You may notice that the cumulative number of deaths went from 674 on April 24th, to 672 on April 25th. This is due to the fact that a portion of "probable deaths" gathered from death certificate data were entered as duplicates. There were about 29 duplicates and they have been removed today.

Colorado:

Polis issues 'Safer at Home' executive order
Apr 26

“DENVER — Governor Jared Polis (D-Colorado) issued an executive order on his "Safer at Home" plan to loosen restrictions that were put in place to slow the spread of COVID-19.”

[...]

““Together, Coloradans have been effective in leveling and flattening the curve, but life will remain much more dangerous than usual these next few months and we should all wear masks when in public. Safer at Home is by no means a free-for-all. My administration has acted boldly in the face of this pandemic and is focused on ensuring our state can endure on the trail ahead. We all have a personal responsibility to slow the spread of the virus and must find a way of living that is psychologically and economically sustainable for Coloradans,” Polis said in the release.
The release said Coloradans should continue staying home as much as possible, and that the order directs vulnerable populations, including seniors, to continue staying home, only leaving when absolutely necessary.”

—-

“Colorado’s largest organization of physicians joined other groups Saturday in expressing concerns about whether doctors and the public are prepared for state coronavirus restrictions to loosen.

Elective surgeries and medical and dental offices can reopen on Monday. But Colorado’s medical community is concerned that there may be an expectation for the healthcare field to return to normal right away.”

[...]

“Patients should be aware that just because elective procedures are allowed, not all medical offices are prepared to perform those procedures with adequate personal protective equipment, or PPE, like masks, gloves and gowns. Markenson said PPE availability varies from community to community across the state.

In a letter signed by the Colorado Medical Society and other medical groups, they expressed concerns about health care workers and the impact the safer-at-home phase could have on the state. They said the progress the state has made while in its stay-at-home order is at-risk if the state doesn’t take further precautions.”

[...]

“Polis has said additional tests are on the way to Colorado, but has not revealed a plan to greatly expand testing.”

First responders granted high priority for COVID-19 testing ahead of wildfire season

“Poudre Fire Authority Fire Chief Tom DeMint said firefighters often finding themselves setting up camp as they battle a blaze for days. Sickness can spread easily in the camps.

“There a common term in the fire service called ‘camp crud,'” DeMint said.

The chief said it is common to see stomach bugs or the common cold spread through those camp sites. This year, it could be different.

“Our fear is that without testing going into these fires, that that camp crud this year could be COVID,” said DeMint.

“It could send a lot of people home from a fire that need to be out in the lines,” added DeMint.”

• the new CDC guidance only applies to first responders showing symptoms.
