The Doe Network says this was an accidental drowning, but after reading the newspaper article, I would say that explanation for his death may be too simple. It could also have been suicide.
I wonder what happened to the motorcycle. He may have left it in a repair shop and then never came back for it because he was deceased. It doesn't seem like anyone ever came forward with any info about it, though. Or someone found it after he accidentally drowned
/committed suicide and took it. If he accidentally drowned, maybe he was intoxicated or high. He apparently had last been living in Nebraska, since his motorcycle was registered there.
Assuming the unidentified is the same individual the prison guard spoke to,
* the Nebraska motorcycle registration card, and
* the individual mentioning he was waiting/trying to get his motorcycle fixed to resume a trip to Florida
are important.
Additionally, Columbia, SC (or the state of SC) is not on a direct route from Nebraska to Florida. Perhaps he was leisurely making his way to Florida and travelling to/thru other places. Quick check on motorcycle registration in Nebraska indicates annual requirement - however, that is what is relevant today not necessarily historical. Also, no specific mention that the card was "valid" really for the year in question.
